BANNER-WATCHMAN. FASHIONS IN PENNY GOODS. Sodlua Dnta far CUldreo Out ere Made for DEATH OF SENATOR HILL. There is sorrow in the land. As the news was flashed over the wires on yesterday announcing that Senator B. H. Hill, one of nature's noblemen, one of the country’s greatest and grandest men, was no more, a whole nation was bowel in sorrow, while the sileut tear, the voiceless anguish of aching hearts gave utterance to those emotions which lie forever be yond the domain of human language. To attempt the eulogy of one so well and so widely known, one whose na ture was so grand, whose statesman ship was so matchless, whose elo quence was so sublime, and whose oratory was so peerless, would be useles an we are incompetent to the task. Equipped for the duties of this life, with an intelligence as strong as it was ever active, with an eloquence as powerful as it was pleasing, to the full measure did he discharge those duties, making himself known and felt throughout the length and breadth of the land. Well and truly may it be said, that, as a patriot, as a states man and as an orator, one more high ly honored and esteemed, never lived, oue more lamented never died, that— ••A nobler and a gs ander mftn. From Sew York Sun. "Penny good a specialty” Is one oi the largest signs on Canal attest. r It is over a candy store. The proprietor answered the question, "What kind of penny goods are there in the candy trade?" with the reply, “There’s more’n a mll- llonof ’em." All examination of his stock showed him to tie in a imeasure ac curate, supposing ttiat his shelves ttiow- cd all the kinds in existence, lie said, however, that ho fashions 'are so ephe meral as fashions In candy penny‘^oods; he could scarcely keep run of them irfin- ilf. The manufacturers are in all.the nature. The spacloue world could not again afford.” Senator Hill was a native of Jasper county, and was 'fifty-nine years of age. He graduated at the State Uni versity lit , the. year 1844. A short while afierhe left college he was mar ried to "Silks Carrie Holt, of Athens, Ua. Though his home was in La- Urange^he spent a goodly portion of his time in Athens, ane subsevuently made it his home, and until he re moved to the city of Atlauta, where he died. He leaves a wife, two sons andtwo|daughters to mourn their irre- reparable loss. How strange and how sad is that dispensation ol Providence which has closed to this great and grand man career so useful, so distinguished and so hrllliant, while yet in the full-orb ed vigor and splendor of manhood’s high meridian? Although it is true that the distinguished deceased lias been called hence, while yet in the full maturity of his powers, yet, the splendor of his intellect, the power of his eloquence and the sublimity of his patriotism was given to the coun try and to his people during tbe most eventful and trying periods of their history. How the memory of this great man will ever be cherished by southern people, when they recall with what undaunted, and with what reluctant ly yielding patriotism he held on to that cause, for which ho was ready and willing to sacrifice his all, and which was tlie cause of that people with whom he was reared and whom he so much loved, Never will a southern people cease to forget those dark days of reconstruction, when this depart ed statesman, this lamented patriot uud hero, with a magnetic presence, with a vigor of intellect, with a love of justice that knew no compromise, witli an eloquence and an utterance ns strong and as fearless as it was persuasive and convincing, and with a love n( country which was tlie Inspiration o{ his every effort; ills every ambition, did quicken into new life the dormant patriotism of others thus dispelling the dark ciwuds which overshadowed an outraged and op pressed people, aud causing)he bright sun of peace and prosperity to again gladden our sunny south. Never will a nation cease to forget tnat fervid eloquence, that able and earnest advo cacy of constitutional law and gov ernment, with which Mr. Hill electri fied the hails of congress, command' ingforhlm the respect, the confi dence, the consideration and tbe es teem uf both friend and foe, apd which madp him the peer, qf the grandest of all his predecessors. While these and. all these grapd, heroic and patriotic events ip tlie life of SenatorHill go to make up this life ’ of a great man, yet there was in the closing scenes of a life so full of history and so full of all that is great, that which will ever in duce the belief that 1&,kind Provl dence, which had so endowed this no blest type or map,, spared unto him that length of days, that fullness of manhood, and that concentration of his powers, whlah made his last, his greatest, his grandest, his best days. Yes, that trqe love of Him who doeth all things well; that Christian pa tience, fortitude aud heroism; that meek, and humble submission to the Master’s will, which so beautified the last, long—sufiering days of Senator Hill, will ever show forth the dosing scenes, in the life.of this Christian he- ro, patriot and statesman, with a glo ry, r. granduer aud a resplendency, that will far eclipse all else that may be epjdor written of a I ife so renow nt d. Farewell to him, so great, ao re nowned, so beloved and so lamented. May a kind Providence look in pity aud in tender compassion upon the family of the deceased. Oh, Thou, that has promised to be a husband to the widow and a father to the father less, care tenderly for them! Soften thie heavy stroke by tbe consolations of Thy Holy Spirit: give to them that solace which comes from no other source: inThy compassion and in Thy tender mercy may they find that Christian resignation and peace, so beautifully exemplified in tbe last hours of the departed loved oue. ■9 mense factories, employ armies of hands, arid make, so he thought; ,a.. mr 1 *' ' money 1 He instanced the case of in Portland, Maine. It is the basis of innumerable prize packages. The Canal street man exhibited box after box of prizes to be drawn by numbers enclosed in penny packets of chewing gum. There were the billiard-ball prize box, tlie sundotv- er package, tbe roller-skate package, the kaleidoscope package, and the prize chewing gum package. Tbe boxes go with tbe gum. Each piece of gum is wrapped up in a paper bearing a num ber, 1, 2,3, or 4. Some of the boxea have four trays. Tbe first tray in the billiard-ball box has big balls of candy, tbe second and third smaller balls of can dy, with elastic cords and rings affixed Imitation oi returning balls, the fourth still smaller candy, globes without elas tic cords. Penny kaleidoscopes are the chief prizes in another box, and chil dren’s roller-skates In another, the box es being tilled with cheap jewelry, sheets oi shelf paper, Sunday-school mottoes, scrap-book pictures, dolls’ toys, and all things that can be given away with a stick of chewing gum for one cent. “The run just now,” said the dealer, ‘is on imitation marshmallow. It Is piostly covered with chocolate. It is so light aud unsulistantial and so cheap that bigger cukes of it can lie sold for a cent titan of any tiring else. That makes it popular with the children. Candies tlie same size mode of other materials would cost the maker a cent. These cost him a quarter of a cent. That’s why it is popular with the manufactur ers, The reporter saw jujnbe paste in fo.-ras so numerous as to lead him to believe it also must be cheap. There were Jujube lobsters, boxes of “fresh shad” of jujube, jujube shaped like loaves of bread, “em igrants” made of juj ube; And jujnbe in twenty other shapes. With these, in the -showcase, were “lemonadesuck ers,” long strips of porous candy with holes through the centres; jawbreakers,'’ hard bails of sngar can dy, aixor fen for according to their sire: “licorice jawbreakers,” sim ilar things made' of lieartoeend sugar; match -boxes; match boxes oi-tta filled wjth candies the size of bitd shot ; “Sar atoga kisses,” which were squares of cocoanut candy; “ice’ cream ' sets,” which consisted of a tiny tin plate of cream-like candy, a tiny tin spoon, and the smallest imaginable cracker “French flats,” which were flat pieces of gum candy, and so on. The dealer said there was as much in the names - of these candies as in tlie patterns. ■ There were penny candy goods, also, which were intended to imitate or. sug gest to the juvenile purchasers transac tions like those of their parents in tlie adnlt world of commerce. There were dishes of licorice candies bearing the words “One cent a measure,” or of oth er sweetmeats branded “One cent a cup,” and the little cups or measures of shin ing tin rAted temptingly on the heaps of goods. There were strawberries, cher ries, snvpking pipes of sugar, and innu merable other devices, fur, aa the dealer said, "they are all made in moulds,-and it does not cost much to change thff moulds.” Is the only Iron preparation that ‘does not eolorthe teefh, and will hot heidacbe of constipation, as other Zion preparations will. :,i ,h(!'*irt >i BROWNS BITTERS Ladies and all sufferers from neu ralgia, hysteria, and kindred com plaints, will find it without an equal. , /yl’ -jui'-* // at m« lull ,-ririsfo fowrifoH »i | mtiori'M bqi'THiiw lreaftuou wou'Ki/j 111 IKK) low aril YlbaMuofom yd vnw .mi -mi »e u-riw. »a jtfjins;-* >v«il fount )i d-rirtw sm»W .«s»w«o swl i~t won >i* 1 M.-fl-tlWI KU'tll iris bY-rei-igv! -mJ!'
