The ’Young Democracy of Clarke
carried Col. Candler over to Oconee In
style, behind ■ the finest team that

unbroken march of triumph.
Gen. Toombs says that no democrat

Mr. Speer Is a niee disciple to yell

low-flung epithets upon gentlemen

Mr. Sheer has refused' to spdak to

a mixture of disgusting abuse against
his opponents and a whine for office.
Even his Crjeuds were paus^tefl.
Mr. Speer's speeches create no en
thusiasm. They fall perfectly flat,and
the ooalltion leader in the ninth no'

Candler awakens a demonstration
that always precedes a conqueror.

have certainly attempted to expose*.
We have now positive proof In our
possession that opnvicts him of con
spiracy with our. politioal enemies,
and will prove that he Is solely re
sponsible for thejiyegrQ office-holders
in this district. Hoes it, ean it, help
an office-seeker to -tear the veil o(

Do you think it will build up Mr.
Spbek when we show the people how
he has used the - power bequeathed
him by their voteji to .form a coalition
with the republican party, by which
our old oppressers could get control of
Georgia? This Mr: Sheer knows we
have evidence in our possession to
prove! Do you think it will assist this
brilliant young aspirant when we show
the people that he is in secret corres
pondence with the most insolent and
obnoxious negro politicians in the
state, looking to their elevation over
the white race? This we have charg
ed and thin we can prove! Do you
think it can help his cause when we
drown his persecutibn wall with an
array of testimony that wili show that
the forgiving pity of an outraged and
betrayed constituency is the last prop
left upon which he can lean? This
we will do as soon us he dare face his
own letters!
It is true the Banner-Watbhmin
has devoted a great deal of spate to'
Mr. Sheer; but we bad a subtle ene
my and a very confiding constituency
to deal with, and it required a Heron
loin effort to arouse them'to a sense
of the danger in which they were
placed. And this we have at last ac
complished. The rallying cry ofde-
rnoc racy from the mountains of Rabun
to the red hillsOf old Morgan shows
that we have not labored in vain, and
that at last the people are awakening
from their lethargy, and by a mighty
and united eflort will throw off the

the day of final account. Let ns right,
here reassert that every charge
have made against Mr. Eltony Sheer
we are prepared to prove, and would
have done so long ago had he not si
lenced our pen by the hand of the law.
This is an acknowledgement or..Mr,
Sheer’s part that jiis record was at
our mercy, and this he could not face.
Do you think forcing an aspirant for
office to this humiliating attitude is
calculated to bring any sensible demo
crat to fats support ? We predict not.
But even admitting that we have
expended too much of our- valuable
space upon Mr. Sheer, we contend
that it was a necessary defense of opr
party and ourselves. Has he not for the
last six months or more an entire page
of his organ in Gatneevllle been over
flung with the most infamous and
slanderous attacks upon the demo
cratic party, the editor of the Banner-
Watchman and every, votor. wbo saw
fit to oppose the man who controlled
the pen of the reputed editor of that
sheet? Must we atapd silently by
and see our party,.ou|r people and our
principles made the sport of a radtaal
renegade from Minnesota,
encouraged and abetted In hlsJnsolte

We denounce the charge that the edi

Pledger’s petition ** an Infamous
falsehood manufactured of . whole
cloth. We never in' our life T*gftfl
a petition asking the appointment
of any negro to office, and may
our right arm wither and drop from
our body when we do. We defy Dep.
Rev. Col. Ware to substantiate his
statement. Mr. Emory Speer has
now in bis possession a copy of Pledg
er’s petition, and if our accuser can
find our name thereon we will agree
next Novemlier to vote the independ
ent-coalition ticket—which is the
hardest penance we ean pay. So Mr.
Edwards was entirely justifiable in
branding the slander as false, and we
tltank him for hts defense in our be
half.
Mr. Ware has been recently re
appointed to office, doubtless through
the intervention of Mr. Speer,, which
accounts for bis enthusiasm is his be
half. His great admiration for “Our
Emory," however, if report he true, is
of very recent date.
Wonder how the mountain boys
will relish the news that besides the
dakeys, Mr. Speer has revenue collec
tors stumping the district for him?
This discovery forges another link the
chain that unites Mr. Speer to the
radical party. -
