BANNER-WATCHMAN.
COL. CANDLER AND THE FILTH-
SLINCER.
We would like lo known who is “VI-
dette,” that has stepped into the shoes
of Flemming, the mulatto barber of Ath
ens? We don't believe that any white
man in Athens would undertake the
dirty and Ignominious job.
In his Clarkesvillo wall tor forgiving
mercy Mr. Emory Speer omitted the
reading of a certain garbled letter to
Hedger. He noticed the author among
his audience, ami wisely decided that
discretion was the better part of valor.
Mr. George C. Thomas, of Watkins-
ville, to-day nails one of the Filth
Stinger’s campaign lies to the wall.
This boast from Mr. Speer’s organ is
about on a par with other statements:
made in that vile sheet. The old Fllth-
Slinger is the champion Munchausen of
the state.
" The Atlanta Whirligig states that the
democracy of the ninth Is raising a cam
paign fund with which to buy up the
colored vote for Candler. There Is not
one word of truth in this. If there^is
any buying of votes done it will be with
Mr. Speer’s portion of the llubbell cam
paign assessment fund.
While Mr. Speer is yelling because
Henry Christy exposed ids com promis
ing correspondence with republicans,
his colleague in the eighth, Dr. Felton,
is making use of private letters that Mr.
Stephens wrote to him, as campaign doc
uments. There is Vniglity little consist
ency In coalition office-seekers.
Gainesville. 6*., Sept. 5,1882.
Editor Rannfr-'Wntchman:—I see that
Speer’s old Yankee-Doodle here is
again scattering his low-flung vulgari
ty and personal abuse all over the dis
trict. This reminds me of a little in
cident that occurred when Col. Can
dler was running for the state senate
In this district. It seams that he had
euchred the old carpet-bagger of the
Filtb-Slinger in some property specu
lation, that raised the ire of the Yan- !
kee-Doodle, who being afraid to meet
the Colonel like a man, took a mean
revenge by abusing him through his
paper. Col. C. made no reply until
one night in a political address. Our
Yankee-Doodle was squatted immedi
ately iu front of the stage, taking
notes. After explaining hU position
In one of the grandest efforts I have
ever heard, Col. Candler wound up as
follows:
“Now, fellow-citizens, I suppose
you expect me to say something in
reply to the attacks that poor, miser
able carpet-bagger sitting there (point
ing at the Filth-Slinger) has made
upon me. I scarcely deem it necessa
ry. You haVe known me from a boy,
while that creature there is one of the
results of the last emetic taken by
Minnesota. Ha is one of the disgraces
inflicted by a victorious north upon a
vanquished; south, and we mustac
cept him end,bis slime as one of the
results of . th^.; war. If I ,have ever
wronged ?r iojuredjthe thing I am not
aware of the . Isct t yet each week be
aims at my unoffending head tnevilest
slanders and most infamous false
hoods. It is true that such attacks can
but be annoying to a gentleman, aud
I have seriously contemplated what
I shall do iu retaliation. Beinga law-
lt la the solemn ,tlmy ol every good
democrat to vote for Mr. Stephens. He
is the UUtpiuee of the party, and the un
doubted choice of a Urge majority of the
democrats in the state. Bear in mind
that when you refuse to vote for Steph
ens you cast one-half of a ballot for
Gartrell, who is the accepted nomi' * of | abiding citizen I first thought I would
ON THE WAR-I\A.TH.
The old Hippotamus of the Shoe-
Peg Gazette came roariLg to the front
this week like a mad bull with a red
rag shook in its face. Now, we don’t
mind the great and immaculate What
Is It, that was captured in the wilds of
Illinois and brought south at an enor-
mouB expense to the revenue deport
ment insinuating that we are not hu
man; but when be begins to shoot at
our uuoilendiug head jokes that were
| grey-headed and toothless when Me
thuselah was an iuuocent baby, we
must rebel. Old Hip. says our head
is shaped like apeauut and that we
would make a great success at keeping
a. ginger-cake stand. We have the
highest regard and veneration for the
peanut, and will not cast a reflection
upon that eatible by comparing broth-
Ratliffe’s cranium to one. Rather
let us say that his empty brain-pan
reminds us of the pie-melon—while
the ignorant may mistake the con
tents for the delicious pulp of the juicy
watermelon, when it is at last
opened you will find the vacuum sup
plied with a mess that resembles
green gourds.
We can’t return brother Ratliffe’s
compliment, either, about the ginger-
cake stand. It requires some ability
to successfully manage even this
small enterprise; hut we think he
would be a capital hand to drive a
blind mule to a bark mill. In conclu
sion, let us say that we have Hit arnbl
tiou to fiud our gigantic brother quill
driver; and if he even feels like hunt
ing us up please telephone this office
at once, and we trill Immediately start
on an expedition to the north pole.
PROPRIETARY MEbfbfNES
the republican party.
The Gainesville Kiltli-Sllnger asserts
that several of the most brilliant lawyers
in Atheus are for 8|«eer. We know to a
certainty that every lawyer in our city is
for Candler. This Is a specimen oi the
broggi ng campaign lies started by Speer’s
carpet-bagger to bolster up a lost cause.
We d-fy liim to name his “several law- 1
yers.’’
Several little journalistic monstrosities
in Atlanta are yelping for Speer. Onr
people don’t want outside advice from
such mongrel political sheets. We are
able to tote our own skillet. The char
acter of a man is generally judged by bis
standing at home; and in the ninth dis
trict Mr. Speer had to import from the
wilds of Minnesota an editor to do liis
gas work.
The Czar still intends, apparently, to
be crowned iu the ancient Muscovite
capital next month. Preparations for
tlie event continue; numerous dispatch
es in cipher arc constantly passing be
tween Count Tolstoi and the governor oi
Moscow, and, most significant of all up
on that city a.-e converging detectives,
police and regiments of soldiers from all
quarters of the empire.
it Is no matter of surprise that the old
renegade of the Gainesville Filth-Slinger
is howling himself to death lor his boss.
We must remember that his bread and
meat depends on 8peer's election. When
the democracy is successful you vill see
that old carpet-bagger pran;e out oi the
Oaineaville posuotlice at a two-forty
quick-step. The fellow is in the same
fix oi the hungry South Georgia cracker
who was caught watching a gopher bole.
Mi. Speer is prating about abuse and
persecution. When he strangles his
Filth-Slinger in Gainesville, that he is
now distributing free through the dis
trict—printed on two car-loads of wood-
pulp paper, obtained from he best knows
whore—then perhaps with some consist
ency he can Complain when his political
record is exposed. The most honored
private citizens in our district are be-
slimed and vlllified by his imported
Yankee editor.
It has come to a' nice pass when the
Intelligent voters ot the ninth district
have tube guided by a trio of insignia
cant papers in Atlanta. Onr people
have sense enough to manage their own
affairs, without advice and dictation
from Mr. 8peer's organ-grinders in an
other district.' So unless that Atlanta
ring wants to seriously damage the
cause ot its employees these sheets had
bettor keep their gratuitous advice at
home.
Falling to get the support of tlie press
in hia own district. Mr. Speer has se
cured, in some way, the aid of the Atlan
ta Herald, a tiartrcll and Felton sheet.
This paper, together with tlie tiainesville
Filth-Slinger, is being distributed free
without monev anil without price, by
“My Dear Mat’’ and other of “Our Em
ory’s” supporters in this district. Our
people have sense enough to form their
own opinions, without aid from rene
gade Yankees and played-out politi
cians.
prosecute him for libel; but he does
not own the shirt that covers his
eareas, and you know the old adage
about ‘sueing a beggar,’ etc. Then I
got indignant and thought I would
take a cowhide and wear him out.
Rut then I remembered that Col.
Styles did that, and the result was
that he was prosecuted for au assault
with intent to murder. So 1 decided
that the game was not worth the in
vestment. But the other day, in look
ing over (mold paper, I read a little
squib that decided me as to my proper
course in the matter. It is this: A
boy, while hunting for a ’possum in a
hollow log, drew out a certain odorous
species of the feline tribe, but in the
encounter get bitten on hand by the
animal. Looking at his maimed
member, tlie victim glanced at his
game with|tbe most withering con
tempt aud exclaimed: **tiol ding you,
I don’t want to baudle you nohow.
I’m just gwine home aud let you itinh
yourtelf to death /’ This, my friends, is
what I shall do with the old Yankee
polecat before me—I shall just let him
aloue and he will soon stiuk himself
to death."
After this the old Minnesota rene
gade let Col. Candler severely alone,
and he was elected by au overwhelm
ing majority. In the present cam
paign he has not only succeeded in
stinking himself to death, but the
stench from his foul sheet is fast en
compassing his master, “Our Emory."
The most glorious news comes from
every section of the mountains, aud
our little game-cock will meet you at
the Air-Line with a rousing majority.
The Banner-Watch man is doing no
ble service. I send you a list of cam
paign subscribers.

The blood is the foundation of
life, it circulates through every part
of the body, and unless it is pure
and rich, good health is impossible.
If disease has entered the system
the only sure and quick way to drive
R it out is to purifv and' enrich the
blood. ‘ '
These ' simple facts are well
known, and the highest medical
authorities agree that nothing but
iron will restore the blood to its
natural condition; and also that
all the iron preparations hitherto
nude blacken the teeth, cause head
ache, and are otherwise injurious.
Brown’s Iron Bitters willthor-
oughly and quickly assimilate with,
the blood, purifying and strengthen-
ing it, and thus drrve disease from
any pan of the system, and it will
not blacken the teeth, cause head-
ache or constipation, and is posi
tively not injurious.

M r. Arnold's Opinion of the Mad Stone.
Oglethorpe Kch<>.
Mr. S. Groff Arnold, who was bitten
by a mad dog not long since, has return
ed home from Columbia couuty where
he went to try the virtue oi a mad stone.
He gave us the following account of his
experience: . The stone, about one inch
long and • hall Inch thick, waa applied
to the wound, to which it clang and re
mained for several hours, difficult to be
shaken off, he being, able to walk any
where while it was on him. On coming
off it was placed la a glass of clear, warm
water, and in a short time bubles were
seen to rise from the stone, which, on
bursting, discolored. the water, making
it a pale blue color. It was applied sev
eral times until refused to adhere, when
he was pronouuoed cured. Mr. Arnold
also informs us that he was told by re
liable parties that a negro boy bitten by
a rattlesnake was cured in three or four
days by the same, stone even after he
had been given up by physicians, the
boy not being able to move when it was
applied.
Wonder what radical negro tlie
Gatnesville Filth-Slinger has now em
ployed S9 its Athens correspondent,
since the retirement of Fleming? We
don’t suppose any decent white man
would care to jnmp in the shoes of a mu
latto correspondent. Our citizens have
not as yel" forgotten that we unearthed
the Filth-SUnger’s “leading gentleman
of Athena’’ to be a mulatto radical,
named B.T. Fleming, employed in one
of our barber shopa.
The Gainesville Filth-Slinger seems
to be trimming its sails so as to desert
Mf. Stephens at a moment when it could
do him il>a most harm. Nothing bet
tor could be expected of this vile, Import
ed Yankee; for aince tlie 1 ‘old common
er” was nominated by tlie democracy of
tlie state, this mass of corruption, who
pretends to edit Mr. Speer’s organ, has
beep seeking an opportune time to strike
Mr. Stephens a blow and the old gentle
won had as well prepare for it, as it will
most probably come before the campaign
ia over. f
By one expression Mr. Speer betrays
himself as the author of the report of his
Bawrenceville speech, as published in
the Atlanta Herald. In speaking of
Henry Christy, he aays, “His face* look-

0 OR COUNTY OFFICERS.
We regret to see a disposition mani
fested in some quarters to bring out op
position candidates to some others of our
couuty officers besides the sheriff. This
is to be deplored and we trust no thought
ful citizen will lend his countenance to
any such movement. We know of no
political issue which can or ought to be
involved in these elections. It is simply
a business matter and amounts to the
selection of an agent, to discharge tlie
duties oi his office in a business like
way. Clarke county is biessed with ex
cellent officers, and we say let well
enough alone. Our Ordinary, Clerk,
Treasurer, Sheriff, Collector, Receiver,
and in fact all our county officers are un
exceptionable men. They have already
acquired experience, more or less, are
faithful and prompt, and there is no
reason why they should be changed.

Please say first, to the public that
the assertion that I have $100 to bet

It is * singular coincidence that all the
uegro, radical and Gartrell papers over
the state are blowing and puffing for
Speer.. We pity the taste of any white
man who will be found in such company.
To prove that Mr. Speer is in full sym
pathy with the radical party we simply
refer to the class of papers that arc sup
porting him.
Mr. Speer writes to the Atlanta Her
ald, in a style of ridicule, that Col. Can
dler has ^vested in a new suit of clothes
for the campaign. Well, what if he
has? The Colonel paid for them with
money earned by the sweat of his brow
—not by th<) sweat of his cheek or by
selling out his party to a republican ad
ministration.
A little patent outaide paper, publish
ed at Bellton, hoists the names of Gar-
trell and Speer. This is perfectly right
and consistent. Now let it fling to the
breeze Pledger and the rest of the radi
cal ticket. The editorial bringing out
Mr. Speer bears the ear-marks of this
candidate himself. Mr. Speer now has
the Filth-Slinger, the Atlanta Whirli
gig and the Bellton Chinqnepin to edit.

Mr. Speer's Filth-Slinger is now en
gaged in the business of abusing colored
men who refuse to voteot the dictation
of Mat Davis, and let him reap the
spoils of office. It cannot be denied
that Mr. 8peer, during his stoppages in
Athens, is daily closeted in close and
loving cotpmunion with the old negro
ring-leaden, whom he thinks can con
trol their race. . i i . . .

make atvother flop, tad fell at the feet or

nponthe devoted .head of ita editor his
most withering scorn. Fran the number
of'flattering articles that'Mr. Speer is
writing that paper about himself, we
must say that the sheet most hold iu
space very cheap,.not caunting its abor
