BANNER-WATCHMAN THE CASE OF MR. SPEISFl'S DEAR MAT." The Filth-Sllngcr calls rs the Bang er-Wash tub. Yes; we have washed Mr. Speer’s dirty riulical linen pretty thoroughly. In the Atlanta Herald of the 23d ap pears a communication signed “A Citizen,” in which the writer attempts to defend Mnt Davis liy abusing and mnlignlng the white democrats of Athens, and denouncing os “a band Of loallng negroes, who never do a day’s work," those colored men who have seen tit to exercise their privilege as freemen and cut loose from the apron strings of Mr. Speer's negro leaders of the communication Citizen" says, "I differ with him (Mat Davis) politically.” Now any one to carefully read that article will see at a glance that the writer and Mr. Speer's postmaster are cheek by jowl In the same political cauldron. This anonymous writer ulso slanders the democrats of Athens by saying, “They had already concocted a plan with a drunken justice of the peace not to grant Davis a bond”—referring to ;j]on. Thomas Crytnes, a leading Oreenbacker of this district, who had - issued the warrant for Davis’ arrest. Rut the writer contradicts his slander Upon tnc anti-Speer men in the next sentence when lie goes on to enumer ate "My Dear Mat’s” bondsmen, as one of them are known to be a bitter opponent to independence, and is a staunch Candler man. We heard the testimony in this case, and there is not a shadow of doubt on our mind but Madison Davis armed himself with the intention of attack ing ltandall Brown, and the testimo ny of the accused’s own witnesses and the stat< luent of Davis himself, is enough to convict him of the outrage ous assault. We admit that Madison Davis has heretofore borne an excel lent character for an orderly, law- abiding man. Rut tills sudden change from a good citi zen to a probable murderer only proves the zeal with which lie es pouses the cause of his bosom friend and employer, Mr. Kmory Speer. ltut let us give a review of the evi dence in this case, taking only the testimony of Davis’ witnesses and the statement of the prisoner. It seems that Randall Brown bad been inform ed that at a political meeting held the night before the assault Mnt Davis had publicly denounced him in the most unmeasured terms, which natu rally enr.-yed the former und lie was heard frequently on the street tocurse and abuse Davis. The defendant ad mits that the language of Brown catne to his ears. The night of the difficulty Brown was on his way home, and had stopped for an instant at the Town * llall to talk witli some of his friends he saw there. Afterwards Davis came up. when the two men got into a dis pute about the language Davis was reported to have used about Brown. The latter called the former a yellow son of a canine, when they hitched. After scuttling for a minute Brown cried out, “I am unarmed and want to have a fair light, but he is cutting me!" They were then separated by the bystanders, when Brown was found to have a fearful wound between tlie seventh and eighth rib, which will probably result fatally. The at tending physicians testified that it was. cither indicted by tiie long, keen blade of a pocket knife, or a dagger: while Randall|Browu states that Mat Davis drew a dirk from his girdle and disem boweled him. Kvery witness swears that Brown had no weapon at all, and Insisted on a fair fight. But in tlie face of this testimony of tlie physicians lluvtalnrge, keen knife or dagger could only have indicted a wound of this nature, in his statement Mat Davis says llml lie was cleaning his dnger-nnilh witli asinall peii-knift, tlie blade not over an inch and a quar ter long r.nd the end broken olf at that. During the scuffle lie says Brown cut himself by forcing bis body against the weunon, that he hud for gotten was in ills hand. In fact, lie didn't know tliut Randall was cut until after they were separated. But strange to say, Davis could not pro' We would ask Mr. Pete Lawslie, in all candor, whether he will support the presidential nominee of the demo cratic or republican party at the next election? As he has been urging the claims of Bullock for governor, we will doubtless be excused for propound ing this conundrum. Now isu’t that lovely consistency! Mr. Speer sneaking behind the law to . , , , keep his own political letters from the And he most amusing part b „ and then Muh , ln hu m,unication,.too, is where“A Ualne8V „ le organ a prlvate letter that Col. Candler wrote in confidence to K. M. Hamilton, Esq! Let Mr. Speer first permit his own infamous radical letters to be published, aud then he can with more candor give the pri vate letters of his opponent. The people feel a supreme contempt for such a one-sided transaction. Judge Folger, better known as Sen ator Folger, a member of Arthur’s cab inet, carried ofl the republican nomi nation for governor of New York like ajitly. This is a victory for President Arthur, (irunt, Blaine, Conkllng and their friends, over which they have a right to be jubilant.—GaiivtvUle Filth- Slinyrr. Yes, and the Filth-Slingcr lias right to lie jubilant, too, for what is a victory for the stalwart radical party is a victory for his coalition boss. But don’t the above paragraph show tlie r-publican ears of the old Yankee- Doodle? He was never known to re joice over a democratic victory. And yet tills interloper assays to dictate politics to southern democrats! Isn’t this the quintescence of cheek? Tlie Banner-Watchman boasts that they have one huudred hew subscrib ers at Lawrenceville. We are prepar ed to bet their new list does not cover thirty names; that one-third the num ber are Speer men, and that not one- fourth of them are taken from the post-offlee.—Gainrtrillf Filtli-Sliuger. We will accept your bet, and are ready to put up any sum of money you want to wager. Now either come up with the “skads” or publicly ac knowledge that you are afraid to back your own words. Mr. Fllth-Slinger Either put up or shut up, as we have made all your other campaign brag garts do. We will either exhibit our books or leave tlie matter to tlie post master at Lawrenceville. What say you to slaking $100 on the question? Now don’t try and crawfish out. Tlie Gainesville Filtb-Sliuger now dul»s Col. Candler the “Cyclops of Un organized”—referring to the fact tiiat in- lost an eye in defense of his country Let the toys In grey bear this insult iu mind at the polls on tlie 7th of Novem ber. The old Yankee-Doodle also asks if tlie Colonel lias an “eye single to Uie good of his country?" We boldly as sert that he lias. Our nominee is not like “Our Emory” with his two ey one turned ple«<lingly toward the rad ical administration and tlie other look ing to his own advancement, at the sacrifice of principle, party and coun try. Give us a one-eyed congressman every time, if one of the orlm must be long to the republican party! What on earth hns become of that injunction? Won’t Judge Erwin now come in for his share of blackguarding from tlie Banger Wnshtuh.—Guinetcillc Filth-Sliiiffrr. That Injunction lias la-eii success fully dodged by your boss, who knew that the publication of ills radical let ters would "everlastingly cook his goose?” Judge Erwin simply did his duty; for we did not expect to hav that injunction removed, hut simply Intended to show the people that Mr. Sjieer dorr not face his political letters and a southern audience. Are you sut Istied? luce the knife in court, saying ihu'the could not tind it alter the tight, al though lie acknowledged lighting a match to scare 11 for his collar button. Tills is the testimony of Davis and his own witnesses. Tlie other side makes Davis out as tlie assailant, wiio struck tlie first blow, und then delib erately plunged his dagger into au unarmed man who was pleading fora fair tight. Every one testified that Brown had no weapons save those given him by nature, and so stated to Ills assailant. Tlie alsive is a true brief of tlie testimony, and we refer to tlie same now on fileir. the court bouse to establish wiiat we say Now does tiiis bsik to any unbiased mind as if Randall Brown is the leader ofa gang of negro outlaws, lead on to disturb ances liy tlie « Idle democrats of Ath ens? Does it make Mr. Speei’s “Sly Dear Slut” out the iiinuceut lamb that “A citizen” would fain make you believe? No; it establishes tlie fact, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that be bail heard of Kaiuiuil Brown’s curses that day; lie armed himself with tin-expectation of a difficulty; ami when be found his enemy at the town hull, lie enticed him into a diffi culty with tlie intention of drawing blood. After our first report of tlie difficul ty we intended to say nothing more, as we did not wish to prejudice the public mind against Davis, who will unswer for his crime before a bai of justice—and we predict lie will not be found tlie iminceiit martyr to Speerism and iude|ieiideiilisiii that “A Citizen” would like to make the 'public believe; and had that commu nication not appeared in the Herald -denouncing and slandering tlie de mocracy of Athens, and torturing Into cupital for Sir. Speer a bloody assault upon a worthy colored man, we would 'have dropped this subject until the case was decided by a jury of citizens. You may carefully read the testimo ny in tills case, and in its lost analy sis you will find that Mr. Speer’s sup porters are inaugurating a system of ostracism and terrorism among the colored men of tlie ninth district, to force them to vote as a body for the so-called independent leaders, aud tliut Rundull Rrowu is the first vic tim to this hellish scheme, and tiiat he fell by tlie bund of tlie colored man upon whom Mr. Speer has showered Ills greatest tuvors. The colored voters are denounced us renegades and traitors to the republican party when they refuse to sujiport Speer, and the same infamous means are now used to drive them into the truces, as char acterized tlie early reign of radicalism 111 Georgia. Persuasion having failed, the few to lie beuefttted by Mr. Speer’s political success now resort to tlie dag ger for au argument. This is the true history of “Tlie Cutting Affray in Athens,"slid we referyou to the sworn evidence in the court-house of Clarke bounty to substantiate what we say. Candler’s love for the mechanic and Inhorer means to work them fourteen hours a day ; the former for $1.50 and tlie latter for 80 els. or $1.00, while in Atlanta tlie mechanic gets $2.50 and the laborer $1.50for working ten hours, llow do you like such love, gentle men ?—Gninreritlr Filth-Slinger. We will reply that Col. Candler paying his hands 25 per cent, more than other men, outside of a large city* which Filth-Siinger’s own figures show. And he don’t set tie ofl in due bills, either, that are never redeemed. Can the old Yankee- Doodle’s boss say as much? Mr. Saye and other of Col. Candler’s old era ployees have already denounced the above slander of bis imposing upon his men as an infumous, unmitigated lie. PROPRIETARY MEDICINES. His charge was that Mr. Speer got it, or this was what he In tended to convey. The report of that eoniniiitee was made before Mr. Speer entered congress, and yet Candler lias tky cheek and insincerity to produce it as applying to Mr. Speer.—Gainn- rilU Fvth-Slinger. To clinch this charge made by Col. Candler we publish the following offi cial Washington dispatch, which sub stantiates every word that he has ut tered. Besides, we refer to the two carjoad of wood-pulp paper donated Mr. Bpeer from Washington, and upon litlilch the Fllth-Slinger is now being pf-lpted. This is the dispatch: - Washington, September 26.—The Georgia republican state committee is the last organization to follow in the wake of Jay UubBeU with aAenjand much surprised and chagrined to re ceive this supplemental demand and from such a quarter. We simply ask Col. Candler and his crowd, where these gentlemen who did not have a cent two weeks ago, got their money to canvass for Can dler with? Also, whether his Glade and Jackson county cauvussers make regular reports Y—GaineicilU Filth- Slingtr. We simply reply that It was not fur nished them from the Hubbell cam paign fund, to break up the democrat ic party and turn Georgia over to the tender, thieving mercies of radical ism. Can Mr. Speer say as much about the funds tiiat he will use to car ry tills district? How about that first installment of wood-pulp paper from Washington, upon which the Filth- Slinger is now beiug printed? We pause for a reply. While we have no objection, per sonally, to negroes lioldiug a reasona ble oroportlon of the public offices which they are competent to fill, there lias been so much said about Hon. Emory Speer iiaving been partial to tlie colored man over the white for office in his dlstriut, we have taken ilie trouble to hunt up the record upon tlie question of colored office-bolding in Georgia. Here it is, and we defy any old moss back ringster to refute the figures: Sixty-one colored men in Georgia holding federa: appointments and under bonds. Two of these, Mad ison Davis and J. T. Heard, live in the 0th district. The others live in the other organized districts of the state, represented by tlie immaculate simon pure organizers.—Gninetritte EiUh-Nlinyer. It Is true that there are only two uegro office-holders in the 9th district, but they hold the most lucrative and honorable positions in the gift ot Mr. Speer. But the Fllth-Slinger forgets to mention Pledger, Fleming, “Mrs. Tolbert” and a large number ot-his other colored ring-leaders to whom he has promised office. We dan you, Mr. Speer, to lift that Injunction, and we will establish beyond a doubt that you have been working to get your colored leaders offices not only In the ninth, bnt other districts. While he has paid the humble voter with unre deemed due-bills, Mr. Speer has been laboring to put his mulatto ring-lead ers In the highest offices in Georgia. This we charge, and if you will only lift that injunction «* will prove it. The Atlanta Herald says, “Allen D Candler spoke to a small audience at Jefferson, Saturday.” The same pa per reported Speer as addressing one of the largest crowds ever seen in that town. This proves the miserable ends to whlAi Mr. Speer’s organs will stoop to bolster up the dead march of their candidate. Every person in Jackson county knows the Herald’s assertion Is too redlculonsly false to need contra diction. Tht Great Specific far Sacralgia tad Hudach* From Frank L. lUrzlzon. Stair Librarian.
