Watkinsville, Oconee county, Wed nesday, November 1st All who desire good government and all who desire to hear tlie truth dispassionately s|M>kt-n are cordially invited to lie present. PUBLIC SPEAKING. “Our Emory’s’’ cause, as bis defeat means to t hem the loss of lucrative of. flees. lion. Seaborn Keese, of the eighth, says there is not a shadow of doubt but that Candler will carry Morgan county by a snug majority. Mr. Hunter, of Madison, endorses his gal lant words We would like to place a copy of that “Mrs. Tolbert’’ letterin the hands of every white lady in the9th district. You would see the fair sex then con solidated for Candler, the pure and 'ncorrupilhle. If Mr. Speer is a democrat, why is it that the authorities at Washington permit government employees to come home and electioneer for him? We iialiently wait for un answer to this conundrum. One old darkey in Jackson county remarked the other day, ”Kf dey Meet Mr. Speer us niggers am Jess ns good as any white man, and a heap better dan some ofdispoor while trash.’’ This is authentic. The Hon. Tho*. Hardeman will address the citizens of Jackson county on Thurs day, October 26th, in the city of Jeffer son. We expect (lie good people of Jack- son to givetho “old wheel horse of de mocracy’’ a rousing reception. 1s t all go and hear “words of wisdom” from this distinguished Georgian. Hear in luind that Mr. Speer, in Ida Athens apeeeh. aeknow le lged that he wrote the "My Dear Mat” letter. So it is seen that Emory was working for his mulatto pet six months before Dr. Grr's time expired. Mr. Tom Hodgson is the only Speer man we have yet found who has the grit to back his judgment. The oth ers will blow and snort, but when you shake the skads in their fuce they in variably hack down. “My Dear Mat,’’ we learn, is mak ing speeches every night in behalf of his Emory. Mr. Speer lias the district overrun with his negro jiets, who are working for him like lieavers. Head “My Dear Mat” letter and see if it don’t acton your democratic atom ach ns a first-class emetic. The best element ot our colored imp utation are for Candler. They detest a traitor, be he demo-rat o' republi can. Hon. Pope Barrow, tin- silvery-•ongiicd orator of classic Athens, will lie an honor to Georgia in tlie T’nitci! States Senate. concede Mr. Speer’s friends now that the race will lie the closest ever made in Georgia. This is a big con cession- Mr. Speer lias thedistrict Ailed with his negro drummers. Isn’t this enough to convince you that he Is no democrat? The Atlanta Ilerald can so far eclipse tlie Southron on campaign lying that the latter sheet lias almost given up in dcs|iair. We would not vote for George Wash ington himself, if he ottered for of fice witli his record cloaked heiiindan injunction. Tlie most glorious news comes from every section of tlie district. An over whelming majority of the masses are for Candler. Tlie Atlanta gamblers arc la-ttiiig two to one on Candler. These men always inform themselves before risk tug their money. Why don’t Mr. Speer accept Col Candler's proposition about those Christy letters? Simply because he dares not faee them. Keep your eyes skinned for cam puign lies on the eve of the election A tine nest of them are hatching for gratuitous distribution Look out for the Hubliell corruption fund next week! There is no doubt about Its coming. Tlie Kpeerites make an open boast that they are looking for money, and we ail know Emory has none of his own. A gentleman tells us that he saw ”111 CiAlllUlliill ATHENS, 8M: ATHENS, tweuty men in Franklin eouuty who were for Speer two weeks ago, but are now for Candler. They were disgust ed by Mr. Speer carrying liis “Dear Mat" wiili him as an escort. i taper SIX LEADING EXHIBITIONS! Consolidating the Undivided and Un' abridged Features of SIX BIG OI&OTJSES, SIX BIG MENAGEEIES, SIX BIG MUSEUMS. And SIX BIG AQUARIUMS, Exhibited under SIX BIG TENTS! All for ONE FRIGE of Admission. And Mr. Speer continues to circu late the rejiort that “My Dear Mat” is u white man. Just write to any citi zen of Athens in whom you have con fidence to get tlie color of Mat’s skin- He is s mulatto, and when a boy be longed to Dr. Moore, aud by him was sold to Mr. Hodgson. democrat, Mr. Speer claims to be yet a stalwart republican administra tion permits two government employ ees to quit their post of duty to come home and electioneer for him. It is a well known fact that no such cour tesy is extended to a democrat. This one act is enough to show any think ing man the sort of democrat “Our Emory” is. M R. SPEER'S “MY DEAR MAT." If tlie Speer men have any lio|»e of success, why don't they back their judgment by accepting some of the many < andlcr bets ottered ? "My Why don’t Mr. Speer curry Dear Mat” up in the mountains with him? He leaves his friend at home when north of the Air-Line. When yon see a white man working for Speer, ask him what office he holds or expects, or how many garden seed did “Our Emory” send him? A Candler i-luh should la- organized in every militiu district. The Speer crowd are hard at work, and we must meet them with a solid front. One negro from Oglethorpe county says he drew some money from tlie Speer men while In Athens circus day, ami thinks it a good joke. Mr. Speer threatens to contest the election, it he is defeated. It will do him no good, as we will have a demo cratic majority in tlie next House. You may look for tlie district to he tlooded with caui|iuign lies when it is too late to have them corrected. Speer’s emissaries are uow at work. Why didn’t Mr. Speer accept onr otter about those Christy letters? Simply because lie knew that lie couldn’t face them ami an audience of Southern peo ple. Mr- Sp.ier in Ids speech says that lie Is not the president, the appointing power, and therefore is not resisinsible for the appointment of negroes to office. But what does lie say in his letter to “My Dear Mat,” (and re .somber that lie ad mits this letter in question) when he supposed no other eyes but “Dear Mat’a” would ever see It. Here is the letter and we want every voter in tlie ninth district to read it: Hol'hkok Kei-rkskstativks, j Wasiiixutox, D. C.—'.88- J. Athens, Out. 8tli, 1881.) lion. Madison Davis, Surveyor of Cus toms, Atlanta, Ga. Sly Dear Slat:—I received your letter to-day, and reply at once to say that I do not think that General Arthur will interfere with any of my appointments. Tlie stalwarts urc not enemies that I know of to tlie independents in Jhe south, but on the contrary may perhaps give us justice. I have written a letter to the I’resident, expressing my inter est in \ o it self anil three or lour others, it w ill be well to keep an eye on Mr. Pledger. * * * You are in the p -ition to do megieat guild with the mountain men and I rely on you contl- d-i.tly do so. Let me hear from you frequently. As ever, your friend, Emoiiy Si-eeii. Does he say here the president'* u/ - poiiitmeiitr ? No, it is wy appointment*! Democrats, white democrats, can you doubt any longer that lie is responsible for the negro appointments in your dis trict? Ami will you vote for a man who turns out as good a man as Dr. Orr and puts a negro in his pluce? And yon colored men, you who have the man hood and the backlinne to vote for whom yon see fit, wliat docs tills letter prove to you? It proves to von that Mr. Speer is only Interested in “My IH-nrMat”and three or four others. Colored men, can yon vote for a man who insults you by expecting to buy all of you liy sugaring “Dear Mat?” Have the coinage and manhood to show bv your votes that “Dear Mat” docs not carry all of your vote* in his pocket. The'truth is, no one can trust Sir. S|a-er. If necessary to success, in is false alike to friend arid fix . ne in-nits white men by putting ne groes into otfiee, not from love • l the ne gro race, but for his love for three or four, whom lie thinks can eontrol tlie entire colored vote. _ Wonder how ninny democrats Mr. S|iecr will send to the Albnuy peniten tiary after Die defeat ? We learn that he has two of our leading merchants on liis black list. Let tlie democracy of tlie border counties see that the Speer men don’t vote negroes trom without the dis trict. It is an open boast that they intend to do so. There is now hut little if any doubt but Candler will carry Clarke county by a snug majority, although "My Dear Mat” is working for his Emory day and night. When tlie Washington clerks are permitted to come home and election' eer for a congressman, it is fair to pre sume that said congressman is tainted with radicalism. Three great circus rings are constantly used. One hundred superior and startliiig acts at every performance. It would takeat least ton hours to give the performance in a’ single ring. If you will show us a revenue officer or spy, or a red-hot radical, we will show you a strong Speer man. Democrats, do you want to be caught in such company? Read Judge Herrington’s affidavit In another column, and you will see that Mr. Speer is still shirkiug behind that injunction, and has ipade no step toward removing it. Neither Mr. Speer nor his friends have denied that he was across the street inciting the negroes to break up the Candler meeting. This one fact is enough to slaughter him. We learn that “Our Emory” has promised all hla negro leaders offloes in the event that they eieet him. Like ills due-bills, we predict that tliege p.omiscs will go to protest. The Gainesville Southron has never denied or even attempted to explain our charge that it is being printed on wood-pulp paper, that was undoubt edly paid for from the Hubbeil fund. Tills was the first Installment Air. Speer received from the radical party. Mr. Speer tells the people he is as good a democrat as Col. Candler. But let us see what he says when in Washington and not before the peo ple, Outlie 10th of December, 1881, an Interview appeared in tlie Cincin nati Inquirer as follows: Washington, Dec. 10th, 1881.—“I shall never go into a democratic cau cus again, said representative Bpeer, of Georgia, to-night. Last session one of the leading democrats In the Geor gia delegation accused me of being recreant to my party fealty. That will never be said again, because l shall nriyr be botvul by party fealty." This interview has appeared in a large number of paper all over the oountry. It has been copied in every paper In this district. It has been read and commented on by Col. Can dler in every speech he has made in this canvass. And never yet lias Mr. 8peer denied one word of it. Read it, ye true democrats who have been hon estly supporting Mr. Bpeer, and an swer ns at the ballot box If you can longer support a man who hlmaelf tells you “he will never again he bound by party fealty.” There Done thing as certain as there is a God above us: AH Independents sooner or later will inevitably land in the republican partv. Stop, democrats, and consider well'before you louger follow tlie lead of independent so-called democrats. ONE MORE LIE NAILED. Learning that Mr. Speer and bis henchmen were circulating a report to. tlie effect that we had been relieved from his injunction against publishing the Christy letters, we publish below a certificate Horn deputy clerk Her rington, that shows to the contrary. Mr. Speer bos certainly sunk very low when he or his friends persue .such a course.
