A CAMPAIGN SLANDER.
GAINKSVILI.K, (iA., Oct. at, 1K82.
Editor Banner-WatchmanI heard
n man nay to-day thnt you said in one
of your editorials tliat a poor man,
unless lie was a free-holier, should
not lie allowed to vote in the impend
ing election for congressman. Some
of the voters in this city are making
Use of it to defeat Col. Candler, and 1
would like to hear from yon on the
subject. Can give my author if de
sired. Very truly yours,
C. A. S.
As we predicted, just on the
heels of the campaign a thousand and
one slanders are hatched by the Speer
men, otic of them being the alsive, ns
ftiruished by some one from Gaines
ville. Now let us say that we never
penned a line that could possibly lie
tortured into anything like this. We
defy the author to produce a cony of
our paper whereby lie can substanti
ate bis charge. We remember writing
an editorial wherein we spoke of some
of the .Vvrihern states adopting such
laws, and commented upon it to prove
their inconsistency witli the pledges
the republican party is making the
negro. This was doubtless tortured
into the charge made by the Gaines
ville .-.pcerite. Hut let us again say
that admitting we did use this lan
guage, or were even guilty <>f robbing a
lien roust or stealing a sheep, 1ms
what we have done or said aught todo
with the election of < undler r Is he to
lie held responsible for the private
acts of his supporters? The editor
of this paper is not a candidate
for your suffrage and never expects to
lie. He represents nothing hut ids
own vote. The whole campaign of
Mr. Speer is made upon not the short
comings and mistakes of Col. ( umllcr,
hut tlic acts of bis individual support
ers. No sensible man will for an in
stant swallow this bait, thrown out to
attract attention from Mr. Speer's own
rotten record. We know of several of
Mr. Speer’s ardent friends and sup
porters who are now si rving terms in
the chain-gang. Would it not be
thought unkind for the Candler men
to charge upon him their shortcom
ings, and endeavor to hold him re
sponsible for their acts? Col. Can
dler is a tuli that stands upon his own
bottom and tlic editor of the Bainier-
Watchmnn totes his own skillet. We
are simply < jJurihtu muim voters who
will east a ballot for the one-eyed
plow-lioy on tlieTtli of November next.
Speer’s friends can make no capital
with sensible men by trying to saddle
the sins of tin. Candler’s supporters
U|siu him personally; anil don't you
forget it!
Curd From Mr. W. n. Combs.
Atlanta, Ga.. Oct. HI, lssi.
Editor Haulier-Watchman:—1 see
in your issue of October IT, an article
headed “All important Speer man,”
in which you state you learn from the
best authority that a tobacco peddler
from North Carolina named W. A.
t ombs is travelling through the dis
trict electioneering for Speer and
spreading the most scandalous repoi is
on t.’ul. Candler and tin* democrats of
Athens.
I am a tobacco drummer and from
North Carolina and travel through
some sections of your district, ami
know of no other tobacco man from
North Carolina by the nanieof Combs,
and if tlie article ami charges in the
0-uiuc were intended to allude to me,

Very respectfully,
W. It. Com ns.
We will state to Mr. W. U. Combs
that he is the party referred to in our
article. We received our information
that lie was drumming the district for
Speer through several reliable sources,
and also that on account of his offi
ciousness in the matter many houses _
had stopped dealing with him. We I td x
also have it that lie openly acknowi- j ihrc
edged at Jug Tavern to being a repub- ; Jjj"’

forms us ttiat it will withdraw i.s to- :
Iiaeeo patronage from him. Our in- j
formants will doubtless now come to \
the front ami give their reasons for
reporting what they did. We with
pleasure publish his card. Our peo
ple are nut so hide-bond as to ipiit
patronizing a man simply because tie
diliers with them politically, but
when one from another state takes
such an active hand in polities it is
i-iiiisidered an insult to the intelligence
of our people, « Ini think they I now
lew to elect ..fibers without outside
aid.
CANDLER IN THE MOUNTAINS.
Failing!
That is what a great
many people are doing.
They don’t know just what
is the matter, but they have
a combination of pains and
aches, and each month they
grow worse.
The only sure remedy
yet found is Brown’s Ikon
Bitters, and this by rapid
and thorough assimilation
with the blood purifies and
enriches it, and rich, strong
blood flowing to every part
of the system repairs the
wasted tissues, drives out
disease and gives health and
strength.
This is why Brown’s
Ikon Bitters will cure
kidney and liver diseases,
consumption, rheumatism,
neuralgia, dyspepsia, mala
ria, intermittent fevers, &c.

I was a great sufferer from
Dyspepsia, and for several
weeks could cat no’hing and

and am getting stronger.

Hon. Kmory Speer—Dear Sir—IN>

Yours truly ?
Mr. Kagle -Dear Sir—Here’s our
hand. Dawson county will join her
sister Hall in rolling tip a large ma
jority for the “one-eyed plow boy.”
Yours truly.
Mr. Fields, the gentlemanly busi
ness manager of Orton’s circus and
menagerie, which exhibited here last
Saturday, in settling with us for ad
vertising, remarked that lie was a
disinterested observer of tlie jxilitieal
situation of tlie nint\ district, hut
mingling wi-h the people, ns he did,
in nearly all tlie. mountain counties,
convinced him tliat Allen I). Candler
would Ik? our next congressman, and
we believe he is right.
Mr. Speer says if I>r. Orr had trust
ed the entire matter in Ids hands tlie
Doctor would have retained his posi
tion as postmaster nt Athens, liridge
Christy acted upon this advice; nnd
still we find “Mv Dear Mat” in ofllce.
Kudical corruption money will float
around in tlie next few days; hut we
believe there are enough true men.
both white and black, in the district
to save us front the infamy of selling
our birthright to our old oppressors.
If the democrats all over the district
will work as we are doing in Clarke
county Candler will be elected by
5,000 minority. We do not believe that
Mr. Speer will carry his own county.
The democratic party iu the ninth
expects every man todo his duty. The
enemy are hard at work, aud we must
not rest on tlie laurels already won.
Now Is the time to work. Follow
up Speer and his friends aud see tliat
no eleventh-hour slanders are sprung
on tiie heels of the election.
Det the Candler men put every
wheel in motion on election day and
haul to the polls those who haven’t
conveyances of their own.
Men are now seen with a pocketful
of money who never had $5 at a time
before. As a singular coincidence
they are yelling (or Speer.
Do you know of a single radical in
your neighborhood but who is for
Speer? And yet "Our Kinory” says
he is a democrat? .
At Norcrosa Mr. Speer did not get a
cheer, but the crowd was enthusiastic
for “My Dear Mat."
