BANNER-WATCHMAN. Letter From Ban’.a. wcsjCoj, Ga.. Oct 27th, 1882. Banner-Watchman: — The North Georgian has hoisted the name of Hon. Emory Speer, and one would think, from reading this able (?) «x- poneptof indepeiidentisni that Banks and all the region roundabout was solid for "Our Emdry.” Now, while I am willing to admit, that some good men in our County may vote for Mr. Speer, you diay put It down for cer tain that Banks will give the one eyed plow boy a rousing majority. 1 Say tbiSj after a careful review of the Situation, and after having traveled over ti greater portion of the county and conversing with a majority of our most influential and well-informed citizens. Speer’s warmest supporters here are weakening every dav, and hundreds who voted for him'in the last election will now cordially sup port Mr. Candler. X have been care ful to.inquire as to the cause of this change, and find that it is the result of loss of confidence in Mr. Speer's de mocracy, and his collusion and coali tion with, negroes and radicals. The . evidence'is too plain to he mistaken. On the other hand,‘Allen D. Can dler bps not only proven true to every , trust reposed In u|m, either of a public or private nature, since the war, but was also (rue daring the dayi, that tried men’ssouis in that awful conflict ; and when elected, as we certainly believe he will be, we can depeno on him to count oue on the democratic side evsry time. Yours, .7 Aiken. A New Tilf..—Our big-hearted triend, Jim Sanders, ot Klherton, cap tured ye editor yesterday upon the street and carrying him into Stern's, placed upon our classic brow the fln est beaver that could he bought. 'I his species of generosity is prover- hlal wtth Jim." We have known him since a boy, and a more whole-souled, genial, true-hearted gentleman never lived. Wheu he is your (rieud you will always find him as tuie as steel; if your enemy he is :.n open oue. He has alwnys made money, but not t hoard up, for he spends it with the hand of a prince. What is Jim San ders’ is also the property of his friends. Ilis character, like his face, is open to the world. His few faults you see, but only his intimate friends know of ltia many acts of secret kindness. Jim Sanders and the writer were boys together, and we know him like' a book, and are proud tocall him friend, lie has one of the .^"ickest minds we ever knew, and had he lived in New York would have become a national political leader. In his advocacy of a cause or friend he is fearl*»s, and pro claims his convictions from the house tops. We have now tills splendid re cruit added to the Candler ranks, and he is equal to at least :100 votes. Jim was born for a leader of men, and you can’t keep his power down. Spain’s Kindness.—Mr. Emory Speer employed a negro man to go up the country and make speeches for lii.n. The fellow got. into n difficulty with some other colored men about a woman and was badly beat up. He returned to Athens with liis shoulder minified and in almost a dying condition. The suf ferer called on Mr. Speer for help to em ploy a doctor, wheu he was given one dollar ami dismissed. This would not do him any good, and hu was in a fear ful condition when some white Candler men heard of him and employing a phy sician had the victim attended to. There was no politics in this, ns the wounded man cannot vote, even in the event that he recovers, which is very doubtful. This sliows that all the use" Mr. S|sier makes of the colored race Is to vote them, when they are dismissed. The above can be substantiated, if neces sarv. COL. J. O. SANDERS, OP SLBBRTON. AVe had a pleasant call from this gentleman yesterday, and uerede- ligeted to find him a straight-out Can dler man. Jim has been one of Mr. 8peer’s earliest, nnd most trusted friends, but hedes< ends front a family noted for its democracy, and when "Our Emory” deserted his banner and went into the ranks of the enemy, like a true-born southerner, Mr. San ders could not follow him further. He is one oi the most untiring workers in Georgia, and Mr. Speer owes his polit ical success, in a great measure, to this gentleman's labors in his behalf. He will now turn his pre-eminent po litical skill on the side of Candler and democracy, ami we expect to hear a good report from him. Jim is a whole team, wherever you put him. SET.LS^Cntrtrs.—This Is the largest circus ever brought to Athens. The animals were in tine condition, and seemed as if they were enjoying cap tivity. They advertised what they would do, nnd we think they came as nenr doing everything advertised us it was possible to do. The bareback riding was as good as we ever saw, and Miss Lottie Aymar captured the hearts rtf nil the young hoys ill town. She is a beauty and a good performer, both on horseback and on llie trapeze. Ciias. Kish is certainly all that be is advertised to be. He is now the cham pion bareback rider of the world. Those that missed seeing tills show will regret it, as it will lie many a long day before they have an opjior- tunity of seeing another like it. Oitr Jewish Population.—it is charged through the district that the Jews of Athens arc solid for Speer, and it is seriously injuring their business. We will here state that two-thirds of them will vote for Candler, ns they concede it their duty as good citizens to do so. If necessary we can publish the names of the Candler men, as they are not ashamed to let 'he fact be known. We know wliat we are talk ing about. Sue Would Go.—Wo heard au old daikey say to his wife at the circus: “Look ahere, Sust, yer jest got ter make up yer mlud ef yer gwine ter lake de shoes yer can’t go to de circus an’ ef yer is gwine to de circus yer can’t git de shoes.” Just about this time the band struck up a lively air and Suse told the old msu she would go barefooted a while longer. She was bound to see de circus. A False Report.—The Speerites are circulating the report that Mr. Tom Middlebrook, of Oconee, is for Sneer and iutends to vote sixteen of his bands that way. We are author ized to denounce tills statement as a lie, as Mr. M. is a staunch Candler man, and will do all in his power to defeat Speer and coalitionisin. Gutting Affray.—Mr. Jack Jock- son, one of the quietest merchants in Athens, had a difficulty with Mr. W (J. Lavendei, on Monday. Mr. Jack- son cut Lavender in several places. It is not known yet whether the wounds will prove fatal or not. We forbear comment, as both parties are good men, and we suppose the law will say who is in the wrong. Joe Thurhond Returned.—Mr. Joe Thurmond, who escaped from the sheriff some time ago, on last Sun day voluntarily surrendered himself to the sheriff and is now in Clarke county jail. Ws will try and have an interview with'Mr. T. and give it to our readers in a day or so. Circus Day.—There was a regular f iraand-swell of enthusiasm yesterday u, Athens for Candler. Ninety-nine one hundredth of the men we talked to were fbr the one-eyed plow boy. Let us keep at work and a grand victory is won. i» . ‘ > — • p The Bridge Christy Letter.—In response to numerous requests we re publish Mr. Bridge Christy’s expose of Uie perfidy of Emory Speer, and will'circulate the document through the mountains. OnmiflCHUSD Visrrbi*;^ I>r. H. D. Newtonarrlyod last Saturday even ing from New York.
