It’s a strong team, and works well together. Let the Speaker of the House shoot down the first member that attempts to commit an outrage upon. Ibe. new. Code! ■Ofiadtor will take his mam wmc mans* 9th district. Bluce that time their Atlse claims are gettlnu bolder and bolder until we expect soon to Near Atlanta set In and usurp the little praise notv left the democracy of our district. We will rcpest, that so far from the nomination of Mr. Stephens assisting us us In our war upon Indc- dfpendcnce. his election was the hard* ext urg’iment we had to overcome. Ho was the alimmt unanimous choice of the S|>eer men among us, and the Gainesville Southron flaunted his name nl Its mast-head. In his cam pulgu hand hills Mr. S|>cer announce*, his apisdutiuent, with luc woids: *'.\mi Governor-elect Stephens says, ‘there is uo|itiilereui:e lietwen Mr.Specr and myself.’ ” He made our Execu tive’s independent utterances, when he whs bulldozing the democracy of the 8th district, a text and excuse for his own course, and constantly wrung luto our ears, ‘‘Mr. Stephens and I stand upon the same platform.” And again: At the mass meeting in Clarke county to select delegates to the gu bernatorial oonvenilon aomo >of atae- ▼ery men wire were chosen ah Steph ens delegates returned home and not only vo.ed hut worked for the election of Mr. 8pe.-r. It was pretty much the same way throughout the district. The most blatant independents were the great est Stephens men, and their cause was made the same. Xow does this look as if the Commoner’s nomina tion helped the democracy of the 9tb district? So fur from doing so he was a clog at our heels—a weight that we could not throw otf. It was his Casey letter that elected Mr. Speer before, and his nomination would have done so a third time had it not been for the Herculean eflorts of the gallant dem ocracy of the Oth. To them and them alone Is the honor and praise of this campaign solely due. Col. Candler owes his triumph to his own people. They it was who bore the brunt of the conflict, and they It is who deserve the glory of the grainiest victory that ever crowned the democracy of old Georgia. So let Gov his filends claim all the praise and glory that justly belongs to them, but we protest against their usurping tbe honor of redeeming the 9th distrlot. Single handed and alone our people fought their own battle, and to them solely does all honor belong. We be lieve that had another candidate than Mr. Stephens been nominated for gov ernor Col. Caudler’a majority would have been at least one thousand more. Mr. Speer placed himself upon the same platform that gentleman had once threatened to occupy, and tliua attracted a support that he would not otherwise have received. time “Our Emory*’ will hold hla dts- SH9?«HQ2 Isn’t It shoot time to starts sob- script km for s monument to Judas Iscariot? We zee that Jesse James Is to have one. Oar young representative la the leg islators has some important work to do, and oar people are looking anx< ioualy to him. We hear very few complaint- from our subscribers about getting tlielr papers since tbe election, fur which favor we are duly thankful. We have no Idea that Mr. Speer will ever offer again for congress in this district. We predict that he will trust his fortune In Washington. You can see the good effects of the democratic triumph already lu Ath ens,In the bearing and depnrtmentot a certain class of suflrage-allngere. And the nomination of Gov. JAC.1SON, Ordinary. ILLEGAL VOTERS. At the xpring term of our superior court the graud jury set a noble aud praise-worthy example ill finding true hills against illegal voters, that we hope and trust will he emulated by the body now in session. Backed by the determined act ion of Judge Cobb, a damper was thrown upon these law breakers, the good effect of which was seen at the late election for congress man. ltut it did not entirely stop tlie evil. If we are not misinformed nearly two hundred illegal ballots were deposited ut the recent contest in Clarke county, and suine of them evuu alter the parties Imd been sworn This lays the culprit liable to a double indictment—for Illegal voting and perjury. At the last term of court some men doubtlessly innocently vio lated the law who were indicted; but at the recent contest the offenders knowingly, wilfully and premedlta tingly cast their ballots illegally They had the experience of others be fore their eyes, uud knew their crime and its penalty. The challengers took pains to warn these law-lireakers of what they were doing, hjil they ac cepted the risk and must expect to puy the penally. So we urge upjn our present efficient grand jury the vita) Importance or ferretiug out these offenders and present every one of them to the court for indictment. It is tile only snleguard they can throw around our hulloi-lsix, and the people demand that the laws under which they live lie respected and euforced Not only have ut«i; voted without paying their tuxes, hut parties dis franchises) on account of not residing in the couuty long enough have exer cised this privilege. They had no right to vote, they knew it at tbe time, and it is right that they should be punished. I.ct the guardians of our public welfare unearth and present these criminals if t hey must hold In session until Christmas and bring to bear every officer of the law in the county. Wo have other important elections now pending, and it is nec essary that we purge our ballot-box of Ulegsl votes. We have succeeded in purifying our politics, and now let us go to work nnd regulate our suffrage. The people expect the present grand jury to take up the task so nobly be gun by the last body and dc their sworn doty. We do not think they will disappoint us. Ohio going democratic In tbe nick of time saved our district from being flooded with tbe Hubbell corruption fund. The Rads, hsd to spend all their surplus money In the doubtful districts north. Senator Pope Barrow receives the highest encomiums from the press throuabout tbe state. Ills election aaema WgWeunanlmaua satis|ketloA' Our newly elected congressman says ho wants the roll of every Candler club in the 9th district, at also the names of all his friends aud support ers. We are willing to shake hands with suck-egg dog “across the bloody bloody chasm,” hut wc can’t stand old Spoons Beast Butler, of Massachu setts. We want the general assembly to middle as little as possible with the 9th in rodlstrletlng the state. We are redeemed, and thore Is uo danger of a relapse. It Is amusing to see certain papers that before the election quietly threw their little Influence ou the side of tn- dependentism, come out now and crow for Candler. Gov. Stephens has gone already into tbe wholesale pardoning business. This was what we feared when this tender-hearted old man was chosen as our chief magistrate. What member will immortalise himself by Introducing a bill in the legislature to prevent that body ac cepting bribes In the form of free passes over railroads? Mr. Speer Intimates In his farewell letter that he will retire to tbe shades of private life.' This Isa wise decision and will give general satisfaction to his former constituents. By the way, what has become of that coalition movement started in this district a few months since? Didn’t Emory carry the fragments of it back to Washington with him in his coat pocket?
