* Card From W. R. Combs. Athens, Ga., Nov. 25th, 1882. Editor Banner-WatchmanI see an article In your paper of the 7th, from Jug Tavern, Ga., signed L. F. Jackson, acknowledging that he was the man that reported the charges that appeared in your paper on the 17th of Oct. against me. Now I stand by what I said in my card of the 31st of Oct., and I expect to go to Jug Tavern again. Mr. Jackson says his reason for reporting what he did, was that I gave him and several others to under stand that I was a republican. Now I don’t think that 1 said anything that Mr. Jackson or any one else could have supposed that I was a republican; But If I was a republican, I don’t think It Is any of Mr. Jacksou's bust ness, as 1 have never had anything to do with him. Now it is 1,. F. Jack son's statement that Dr. H. H. Carl ton gives the lie, aid! not mine, for he (Dr. Carlton) udniiie what 1 said, and 1 did not say that Dr. Carlton said anything that he did not sny. Now I think that I can prove by Mr. Jack son’s neighbors, and the citizens of Jug Tavern, that Jackson misrepre sented me. It seems that L. F. Jack- son has done his share of lying. As to my truthfulness, I am willing to show up with Mr. Jackson. Now, Mr. Editor, I think it unnecessary for me to take up any more of your space about this matter, as my friends and acquaintances know that the charges against me in your paper are not true Very respectfully, W. A farmer tells ns that lie raises mule colts at a cost of $35 each. Wc have read of several potatoes this year, that were a yard long. Not more than half the small grain will be sown this year as last. Mules and horses will be high next spring, as tbc demand is great. It is hard now to get cotton-pickers, ns the darkeys arc wearied of the job. Nearly all of our farmers will have provisions enough to run them next year. John 8. Jones, near Bellevue, made 1,102 bushels of sweet potatoes on one ncre. The old-fashioned open fire-place cooking is much better than that done on stoves. Ilog* are very scarce through the coun try, but we predict that more will be raised next year. Every year more of our fertile low- ? (rounds are being reclaimed, that have ain idle since the war. W. D. Banks, of Clayton county, has the boss cow. lie says: "By dang It! a man can pick her up and tote her, then set her down and milk her, and lie can’t tote tlie milk. Georgia’s corn crop is the largest since 1872, and will reach 30,000,000 bushels. The oat crop reached 8,000,000 bushels, bnd the wheat crop 5,500,000 bushels. It is thought 1,000,000 hales of cotton will be raised. This it the record of good farming ac complished by Mr. Reuben E. Mann, of Madison countv, the past year: With three plows lie lias inode and gathered 040 bushels of oats, 105 bushels of wheat at a yield of 35 bushels to the acre, 5 tons of Bermuda hay, 800 bushels of corn, with fodder in proportion, a large quantity of pea* and pea hay, 400 bush ela of sweet potatoes, and 20 bales of cotton. He will make about 35, possi bly 40, bales of cotton. His farm, con sisting of 300 acres, is only partially in open land, two-thirds of it being in woods or old nines. 8ENATOA BROWN'S OIFT. The $50,000 gift of Senator Brown as an endowment fund of the State Uni versity for the education and main tenance of poor young men Is still held In alieyance. The conditions of the gift, It will be remembered, re quired that the legislature would issue seven per cent, bonds for the amount, and take the money Into the treasury. The Board of Trustees of the Univer sity at their last meeting, held In At lanta, appointed a committee to watt upon the legislature and ask the for mal acceptance of tile donation on the terms proposed by the donor, and the educational committee of the legisla ture unanimously reported In favor of accepting the gift. The matter was brought before the house on Wednes day, and a conclusion will probably be reached before the December ad journment. He Was Pumfep Oit. —A young stranger in our city was yesterday ta ken sick and went to a physician to prescribe for him. The doctor gave him a preparation with instructions to apply it externally. Through mis take he took a dose, and the same be ing poisonous, soon the young man was suflering great agony. The phy sician was instantly summoned, and through the means of a stomach pump the dose was removed and the patient is now in a fair way of recovery. Advertising Pays.—A few weeks since Messrs. Orr & Hunter inserted a live line local In our weekly, calling attention to tlieir guano. The other day Mr. Orr came Into our office and stated that to Ids certain knowledge that notice had sold him at least six tons, as the parties referred to same andlthad brought him trade from a section that he had never before been able to reach. Stovall, of Elbert,had three bales of cotton stolen from him the night of the snow, and was searching for it yesterday in Athens.
