All our readers who are so uufortu

the Athena branch at night have a
(baling remembrance of the old rick-

they mast ride. It has evidently done

tCKSMITHING.
Bill Moore, of the Augusta News,
aaya l iell over a trunk aud broke my
collar-bone while attempting to put
on a clean shirt. That was Larry
Gantt, which can bo acconnted lor by
his Inexperience in such bareback
feats. My shirts arc not hard to put
on, as they are open-back and I al
ways wear the back before. Now, if
yon don't let me alone I will be obll]
ed to challenge you, and 1 hate to <
that as It would disfranchise me. and
1 want to vote for lion. J. C. C. Black
one lime before I cau die satisfied.
Yours in shirt, Oli> B
We clip the above defense ot our es
teemed friend "Old B.,’’ .from the
Hartwell Sun. Now he must not try
and craw-fish out of his transgres
sion* by heaplug them upon us. About
two years ago we bought four shirts
and have been wearing them con
stantly evei since. As a consequence
the bands ol time and our washerwo
man have not dealt lightly with them
and the partial split in the back has
grown Into a general rent-usunder,
reaching from the collar to the tip
end of the caudal appendage; so now
when we feel like donning a biled
shirt all we have to do is to spread our
pinions aud march right lu. There is
no risk or danger in this, ss “Old B."
must confess. But the case is difler-
vnt with our aged friend of Hartwell.
If we mistake not his shirts are made
oflhegenuiue "Old B." guano sacks
that not only hides dirt and seldom
require a change, but they are war
ranted not to rip aud tear, like our old
frleud's customers when he presents
their guano notes in the fall. It is
highly probable that in making Ills
annual change of linen "Old B." and
apiece of the twine with which the
sack—we lueaut to say shirt—was orig
inally sewed, gotitangled up and the
trouble described by Bill Moore was
the natural consequence. So we ad
vise our Augusta brother not to be
bulldozed by “Old B." The only way
the old man can clear liis skirts is to
establish an alibi—that is, prove to
the courts that he hasn't cliunged
shirts this year.
A BOO K1LLINO TIME.
Last Sunday, in company with Mr.
Charlie Baldwin, we accepted an In
vitation to spend the day with our
friend Mr. Wni. H. Jones, who lives
on the Lexington road, about six
miles from town. We had a delight
ful time strolling over bis fields snd
inspecting the ground from which had
been gathered cue of the best crops
raised in Clarke county this year. He
has his fields in superb order, with
good fences, and ou every hand you
see evideuoea of of a progressive and
successful farmer. Besides about 75
bales of cotton Mr. Joues has more
thau enough corn to do him besides
raising his own meat, lie has just
completed a fine barn and stables aud
a splendid eteaiu cotton giu. About
eight years ago this gentleman began
at the foot of the ladder, and bus now
worked hie way up to independence,
and is in a sure road to wealth.
He has done it by hard work and good
management, In clearing new fields
be saves every stick of timber, which
is sold in Athens. He has fine Iwrlej
and other patches,besides sowing plen
ty of small grain to run his farm. We
had one of those old-fashioned hog-
killlngdinnera,known only to success
ful southern farmers, aud of course) it
was enjoyed. Mrs. J. knows just how
to have one prepared. In a future is
sue we shall write up Mr. .I!a plan of
farming, which will tie of interest and
benefit to our agricultural readers.
