DEOAPITfTgDBRIEFLETS. Prone your grape vines, and trim your shrubbery now. What about that Athens & Madison railroad f It is a necessity. The Masons ol Harmony Grove will have a big dinner on the 37th. It Is predicted that we will have a Snowy, disagreeable Christmas. A negro in Jackson county la mak ing money fast manufacturing jugs. "Most-of our merchants now pay Qaab^or-th^country producethey buy It fa/not uncommon to see cotton wagons roll into town Sunday even ing. ■ '■ r ■ v Nicholson, Sanford & Co. buy and ' sell about ten bushels of eggs every day. , ;i , After Christmas we will put a beau tiful new dress on the Banuer-Watch- man. ,, { A young white man was in town the other night gambling with ne groes. There are several colored Mormons in Athens that our grand jury should Investigate. Read the interesting story on onr first page and profit by it. Let well enough alone. Mr. John Billups speaks of going into the wholesale liquor business in Charles ton next year. A country woman was on the street yesterday with a stylish cloak made of an old bed-quilt.. Our students complain very much at the high prices they are charged in Athens for books. * On Sunday our young men will now have to ask themselves: “What must I do to be shaved!” If you want to buy a splendid little farm near Atheus, read Cupt. J. E. Hitch's advertisement. Maddrey & Co. have built up a fine trade by low prices, Ural-class goods and liberal advertising. Our merchants say collections were never so backward as this year—farm ers holding back cotton. Veronee denies the prevalent report that he took those prizes while the fair managers wasn’t looking. An Athenian yesterday paid $2.50 for a four-year-old gobbler and sent it to some Augusta friends. Eighty-five persons from Haber sham county left last week for Salt Lake to join the Mormons. Two men have lost their lives work ing on the Georgia extension, while several have been Injured. George C. Thomas, Esq., sold his splendid house and eleven acres of land In Watkiusyillefor $1,000. Five new members joined the “Uni ted Sons of Iniquity” yesterday. This noble order is growing very fast. Mr. and Mrs. Prof. White have moved Into their new house, which is one of the handsomest in the state. A vendor of plaster of Paris images was In town- Saturday selling g tailed squirrels and blue-honied deer. There is no excitement over the county election, and neither money or free whisky is used that we know of. “Home, Sweet Home.”—The At lanta Constitution speaks aB follows of the original manuscript of this pop ular song, which Is now in the posses sion of Miss Mary Harden, of Athens “What apreclons possession is that of the elderly lady iu Athens who owns the original manuscript of the “Home, Sweet Home,” ub written by John Howard Payne! The words o* the |K>oni as Urst written are nil inter- llued, with here and there an etnlenr- ing expression from the writer to the lady who now holds it. In the old days Payne was devotedly attached to her, and she has many of his letters that no eye save hers will ever see. She is a noble and high minded wo man, and a fit legatee of the memories of a true poet, and the manuscript of the best known American poem. She has been o.ieied a large sum for the manuscript, but of course uo money could buy it.’.’ “Uncle Jim Johnson.”—We were delighted yesterday to receive a call from Mr. JamesT. Johnson, of Lex lngton. There never lived a more no- bleold man. Before the war he was quite wealthy and his home was open to all. He was charitable and gener ous and his purse was ever at the command of his frieuds. Mr. John son lost his property by the war, but he retained his noble, generous, cheer ful heart, which not even misfortune could change. If “Uncle Jim” has an enemy in the world we do not know it. Long may this grand old man live, and If he does not reap his just reward in this world lie will in the next. A Poi.ytkcnjc School.—The Georgia legislature Will In all probability estab lish a polytechie school in the state, for the education of mechanics, which we think would be a splendid institution. Atlanta, w ith her nsual greediness, will make an effort to have this school loca ted III that city; but every one knows the superior advantages possessed by Atheus. Besides rumbling itlieio run,in connection with the State University, we have undoubtedly the best education al centre in the south. We hope Mr. Russell will properly set our claims be fore the legislature in the event that tliiatohool is established. • n c: x3 Know SL That Brown*sIron Bitters will dire the worst case" ~ ' of dysfrepsia. . ‘ , *» OJml Will insure a and increased Cures general debility, and gives a new lease of life Dispels nervous depression and low spirits. *• " Restores an exhausted nurs ing mother to full strength and gives abundant sus tenance for her child. For lix years I hare bees a great sufferer from Blood Disease, Djrs- rjpzia and Tan«tip)^n so debilitated that I could not retain anything on my stomach, in fact, life had almost become a burden.
