BANNER-WATCHMAN.
GOOD DETECTIVE WORK.
Mr. John Wren, the daective of
Richmond, who has beeir working
up some cases in Georgia, reports:
“I arrested, at Mt. Airy, James
Winters and William Winters, for
attempting to wreck the trains of
the Atlanta and Charlotte R. R.
Company at 784 mile post. They
were sent to jail and to be indicted
bv the grand jury, which met at
Clarkesville Monday, 26th Febru
ary*, 18S3. I arrested, at Toccoa.
Wm. Huckleberry and Win. Davir*
both colored, for robbing the freight
train at Toccoa station twelve dif
ferent times, and robbing the depot
at Westminster. 6. C., and attempt
ing to waylay the agent, Mr. Mur
phy. They were sent to jail for
burglary and to be indicted by the
grand jury,* which meets the" 12th
(lay of March, 1SS3.”
DECLINE IN PRO! ISIONS.
Down go the quotations on the
boards of the Metropolitan Ex
change! A largest style of drop is
noted since Saturday and all in the
face of buoyant speculation and fine
demand. In facta hull feeling is al
most universal in the face of a bear
market. The quotations for Mav
in ribs show a drop from 10.174 on
Friday last to 0.8*4 to-day. This is
a drop of nearly half a cent, and is
regarded as something remarkable.
Lard dropped from 11.774 on Fri
day to 11.50 to-day, wheat, from
1.16 to 1.14. corn from 63} to 624,
and Pork showed in these few days
the wonderful fall from 18.72 to

CHARMED BY A SNAKE.
Several years ago a little child
living near High Shoals, in Oconee
county, had a habit of carrying its
meals out into the yard, near an old
clay root, to eat. One day the moth
er followed and watched the child,
and judge her horror when she saw
a large highland moccasin glide to
it and help itself from the plate.
The child handled the snake, and it
made no resistance. That evening
the reptile was killed, and shortly
after the child sickened and died.
The parents attributed its death to
the ioss of its pet. We have often
seen similar circumstances to this
published, but there is no doubt of
its truth, as the facts are known to
parties now living in Athens.
PRICES OF COTTON.
According to the New York Sun,
the lowest point cotton has reached
since the war was in December,
1S78, when middling was SJ cents
in New 3 ork and .jJ pence in
Liverpool, but it then rapidly ad
vanced in price, and in the May fol
lowing was 13 cents in New York
and 71 pence in Liverpool. The
highest point was reached in 1S64,
during the war, when middling was
sold at if 1.90 per pound in the New
York market and 2 shillings and 6
pence in Liverpool. The lowest
point ever reached was in 1842,
when it was as low as 4 cents.
A SNAKE STORY.
Mr. Isaac Lowe, a gentleman of
undoubted veracity, tells us the fol
owing snake story: In Morgan
county a negro killed a very large
rattlesnake and gave it to a "doctor,
v h ) tied the reptile behind his hug
gv and dragged it ten miles, leavin^
the snake that night tied behind his
buggy. The next morning he found
the mate of the rattlesnake lying
beside the dead snake, having’fol
lowed its trail for feu miles. Tljp
live snake was of the exact size, of
the dead reptile, which was a very
large specimen and was dispatched
without trouble.
