HON. HENRY D. Mo DANIEL.
We print this morning an excel
lent card from Maj. McDaniel, on
the subject of the approaching con
test for the Governorship. With 1
delicate appreciation of the propri
eties of the situation he announces
substantially that he will enter uito
no indecent scramble for die place,
but if the people demand his ser
vices he will not feel at liberty to
disregard their wishes. This is in
accordance with the good old
wholesome doctrines of the fathers;
doctrines which we think their
children will relish now. We know
it is fashionable in these days to de
cry and ridicule such sentiments,
but unless we greatly err they will
touch a responsive chord in the
hearts of the people. This card is
on the line of Maj. McDaniels whole
public life. Modest and unobtru
sive he has shrunk from no public
duty to which he has been called
He has in more than ten years of
legislative service made a record of
which any statesman in Georgia
might be proud. Many of the
wisest laws in our statute owe
their originality to him. His posi
tion as chairman successive of the
finance and judiciary committees of
the senate have given him a practi
cal knowledge and insight of the
affairs of the state, which would
render his services invaluable as
Governor.
We commend him to the people

Hon. A. O. Bacon, one of Ma
con’s vast army of standing candi
dates, is the first politician on re
cord to write an interview with
himself and send it to a newspaper
for publication. And this, too, be
fore the breath had scarce left the
body of the lamented Stephens.
The Constitution proves that
Standing-Candidate A. O. Bacon
not only announced himself for
gubernatorial honors a few hours
after Mr. Stephens breathed his
last, hut further that the interview
published while the body of the il
lustrious dead was lying instate at
the mansion was written by that
gentleman himself. If this discove
ry isn’t enough to nauseate the de
cent people of Georgia they must
be copper-plated inside.
We heartily endorse the course
of the citizens of Waynesboro in
running off those Chinese. They
gratified to receive commendation
so cordial and' emphatic from the
Banner-Watchman. Lest there be
misunderstanding as to my attitude
in the present race for Governor,
a’lotv me to state it. The maxim of
the fathers was, that office at the
hands of the people should be nei
ther sought nor declined. I recog
nize the right of the people to re
quire the services of the citizen, in
any position to which they may
consider him adapted, and his duty
to respond, whenever circumstan
ces permit. Since the death of our
lamented Governor Stephens, and
the necessity for an election, friends
in many counties, notably in Clarke,
have expressed a desire that I should
enter the race. I could not know,
in the short time permitted, how
general might bo this desire and
preference amongst the people of
those counties. Appreciating the
recent loss of the people, in tbe
death of the Governor, and the sor
row of the people, I could not con
sent to make a personal canvass for
the succession. In response to let
ters and in conversations, not in
tended for the public, I have pre
sented this view, but have said that
while I do not wish to become
candidate at this time, if the demo
cratic convention acting for the
good of the party and the welfare
of the state, should see fit to nomi
nate me, I would not feel at liberty
to decline.

The contest for the governorship
of Georgia begins to get interesting.
There seems to be a general desire
among the statesmen of Georgia to
serve the dear people in the way of
granting pardons, issuing proclama

treasury and other minor things.
Gentlemen, just take back scats,
