Extract from too Address of tbo Defeated Rone-

The massacre in Danville is iden
tified Hourlronism with the name of
riot. The facts as gathered from
all sources are that upo i Saturday
evening proccding the election,
just after the Danville
negroes had received their
weekly pay and were buying their
Sunday supplies in a crowded mar
ket place, a white man appeared
and had an altercation with a negro
and whipped him. The fight was
ended, and no other negroes came to
the rescue of the colored man. But

them run, and takes them up when they

ab'.iit as mneli of them as he does me.

"RED TIME.”
The citv of Athens has adopted
what is known as the “Red Time,"
which is tile same used by the Geor

new houses are going up on every
hand. Mr. H. has just erected a
neat cottage and will move therein
this week. They have laid the iron

A GOOD SHOWING.
Notwithstanding the fearful
drought this year. Superintendent
Tuck, of the pauper farm, came out
if-27 ahead of all expenses. This is
certainly, under the circumstances,
a splendid showing, and we arc
glad to hear that the grand jury has
added ifioo to his salary, thereby
securing his services lor another
year.

unarmed, defenseless and Hying ne
groes.
IIow many were killed no one
knows, and no one will learn
the truth for the condition of things
still in Danville is such that the truth
cannot he learned. That they were
shot in the hack like dogs, while
running away that no pistol shot
was fired by a black man; that
white man was injured, saved by
his own friends; that days the poor
victims were found dead in alleys in
warehouses and under houses, like
poisoned rats that hat! crawled away
lo die; that the negroes lied to the
woods, to the State of North Caro
lina. to tlie four winds of heaver—
these arc a few of the tacts of thi
bloody, wholesale murder, which
was telegraphed far and nearby
Bourbons as an insolent uprising ot
the blacks against thcYvhitcs. * * *
The result of these outrages has been
to add the crime of murder to tin
already long list of Bourbon of
fences. The responsibility for the
crime rests upon.the leaders of that
faction who by incendiary appeals
intlamed the brutal perpetrators to
commit these deeds.

GEORGIA DIAMONDS.
The glowing reports of diamonds
and precious stones found in North
Georgia must he taken with many
grains of allowance. Occasionally
a really valuable stone is found, hut
generally these rare and costly gents
do not stand the test in New York,
and turn out to he worthless. On
ly recently a very valuable green
gen proved to be, on a final test, a
piece of melted bottle glass. An
other gem, for which $1,000 was re
fused before it was sent lo New
York, turns out not to he worth
enough to pay expressages.
THE CARNESVILLE RAILROAD.
The engine has arrived for the
Carncsville railroad, and the work of
laying the track will now begin anil
he pushed forward as fast as possi
ble. The engine was brought down
the track of the Elberton Air-Line
Friday evening. Uncle Billy says
she makes two miles in seven min
utes. We congratulate the people
of old Franklin, and especially Un
cle Billy. Athens ought now to
connect with this road, via Daniels-
ville, and secure the trade that will
otherwise go to other points.
RAILROAD TIME.
The new time has got things rath
er mixed up in our city, and unless a
fellow wants to get left he had bet
ter he on the look out. The North
eastern is advertised to leave Ath
ens at 9 o’clock, and that makes it
leave by the city time 8:22 a. m., and
by the Georgia railroad time at S
o'clock. When it is S o’clock at the
Georgia railroad, it is p o’clock at
the Northeastern. It has got us
mixed up so it is hard to tell when
daybreak comes, or what time to go
to dinner. If a passenger wants to
take the Northeastern train he had
better be going down at 8 o'clock
to take the 9 o’clock train.

FIGHTING FIRE.
A few days since, the "in-house
of Mr. 0.11. Arnold, in Oglethorpe,
caught fire from some bagging
hanging at a window, that was ig
nited l>v a spark, and in an instant
tl-.e whole room was in a blaze. Mr.
Arnold at once rushed up ^airs,
and with a barrel of water that was
kept near the gin, began to fight
the flames. An unfinished bale in
the press wasflaming up to the roof,
while the seed cotton was a sheet
of flame. Mr. A. first ran down
the press and thus temporarily
smothered the flames in the lint,
when he set to work to extinguish
the seed cotton. The smoke was
so dense that he at one time left
the building to its fate, hut returned
and began to work again. Fortu
nately he had some barrels of wa
ter near his engine, aud with thi
finally succeeded in saving the
property, but his hands were badly
burned. There were about fifty
hales of cotton in tlie house at the
time. Ilis loss amounts to about
300 pounds. It was certainly a he
roic fight and one of the narrowest
escapes from a disastrous lire
aver heard of.
