Mr. Hattaway has been in the

Mr. Isaac I.owe has one of the

A RAILROAD VICTORIOUS.
The Hayden theatrical troupe
brought suit against the Georgin
railroad for ifhoo damages, for being
behind schedule time and thus caus
ing’.hem to miss an appointment.
Hayden gained his casein the supe
rior court of Richmond county, hut
the road carried it up to the su
preme court, which reversed the de
cision, and held that the damages re
sulting from the particular character
of the business of the traveler, un
known to the railroad company
contracting with him, are too re
mote to be recovered.

4 MA.11CBD CONFEDERATE.
There is a one-legged Confeder
ate soldier living in Madison county,
who Went to Mississippi during Che
war and joined a regiment from
that state. After losing his leg he
Moved hack to Georgia. He has
r.cver received any pay as a maim
ed Confederate soldier, nor can he
get it, owing to the fact that nearly
all of his company were killed, and
he cannot get two of his command
to certify that he was in the war.
All of his officers 'were killed, and
he don’t know who to write to to
get a certificate. The man is very
poor and the money would do him
a great deal of good. There should
he a special act pa.sed for his bene
fit so that he could get the money
which is justly due him, as much so
as any one else. As he was a Geor
gian before the war and a Georgian
since, we think it would l>e right to
strike out the certificate in the ap
plication which requires an officer
or member of the company to certi
fy when and where he was wound
ed. A little red tape sometimes
does a great deal of harm to a
worthy object.
THE SLA Ml IN INSTITUTE.
This institute is situated at Jeffer
son, Ga., at the terminus of the
Gainesville, Jefferson ft Southern
railroad, and only tS miles from
Athens. The town of Jefferson is
one of the most healthy little places
in Northeast Georgia, with good
water and fine morals. This insti
tute is presided over by Mr. \V. S.
McCarty as principal, Mr. Bennett,
of drooks county, a graduate ot the
University, as assistant, and Miss
Brewer, of Atlanta; as assistants.
The corns of teachers are all well
educated, and wc know from what
we have seen of the Martin Institute
that it is the place to prepare your
children for college, to give them a
first-class education. Hoard is very
cheap, and the pure air of Jefferson
will help a great deal towards get
ting an education. This institute
had last session 170 scholars, and
Mr. McCarty thinks there will be
a great many more at the next ses
sion. We advise every one who
naschildren to educate to send them
to the Martin Institute.
Huntsville, AlX., Dec. 9.—
Andrew Hanby and wife went
visiting, leaving two children, ages
four and two years, locked up in the
house, and returned to find the
house in ashes and the charred re-
luains of the children in the debris.
