timber growing between Athens
and’Union Poin^ There is scarce-
any original forest pine left
jtanding. The little that is leit is
ieing fast sacrificed to the saw mill
and the builder, and there is noth
ing left to break the monotony of
our red hills, save the fields of /‘old
field” pine, which is fit for nothing
but poor fences and worse fires.
Living chestnut is fast becoming a
thing of the past, and ere very long
specimens of this wood will be
found only in the cabinets of the
curious. It seems but a few years
ago when chestnut rail fences were
uite common. Now one sees only
cnees of this “old field” pine,
which some farmers say rot down
one end before they are complet
ed at the other. It is fortunate that
the fence law, so fast gaining popu
larity wherever it has been tried
has come to the rescue.
CHAPTER III.
Fully half the land bordering on
the railroad is thickly dotted with
stumps—quite a contrast with the
appearance of land north and west,
where I have observed it carefully
cleared ot every stump and stone,
and these utilized into making
fences. Negro cabins are e/e ry

the rest of his species to be as infe

himself superior to the frontiersman
chapter iv.
Being Sunday, you may well
guess that the first thing I saw when
we cflme into Crawford, was a
white duck hat, which crowned
Mayor Dorsey. Here also I saw
the “gigantic Little” leader of the
Crittenden brass band, who is get

good music during the coming sea
son. This band has the finest set of
instruments in the state and plenty
of talent to perform upon them.

BULWER LYTTOS'S BRIDGE.

“ What a beautiful bridge between old
age and childhood is religion. How in'
tuitively the child begins with prayer
and worship in entering life, and bow in
tuitively, on quitting life, the old man
turns back to prayer an,d warship, put
ting himself again aide by side with the
infant,” remarks Sir E. Bulwer Lytton,
in tiis “Strange Story.”
Yes, bnt between its distant abutments
he bridge of life has many high and aw.
uf arches, through which the waters
dash and roar in wroth and desolation,
l’rayer’and worship alone do not sustain
these. Nature> solid rock must lie un
shaken beneath, and human art and skill
must rear and solidify the structure ov
erhead. God’s wijl ib best exemplified
in the laws He has made under their con
trol. Neither the child’s trustful “Our
Father,” nor the old man’s “Forget me
not in my infirmities,” will alter this by
the weight of a grain.
Science and art first—then faith and
prayer—is the order of Heaven itself.
Dignity heals through Its agents, and
those agents are the discoveries of man;
not tho vague announcements of proph
ets or seers. Is life a burden to you?
Does time drag? Is your power to cope
with life’s problems and duties weaken
ed? You are not well. Your blood is
sluggish and tainted, perhaps; or some
organ is torpid or overworked. This fact
may have taken the form gf dyspepsia,
rheumatism, gout, malaria, pains in the
stomach, chronic headache, or any of
dozen other ills. Parker’s Tonic will
invigorrte you, as freed sir invigorates
those who nave been ahut up in damp,
fetid cells. It is powerful, pure, deli
cious, scientific, safe, the keystone of the
central arch ol the bridge 01 life.
