THE WEDNESDAY'S ELECTIONS
Tho state elections, last Wednes
day, show that old Georgia is
still solidly democratic, and that rad-
iqalism and independence are buried
past resurrection. In isolated coun
ties a few ol the latter class .crept
in, by voting the negro as a unit,
but the organized democracy not
only proved that they had lost noth
ing, but captured several old inde
pendent strong holds. Taken as a
whole, the Wednesday’s battle was
a grand triumph for democracy,
and we confidently predict that one
more conflict will sweep the last
vestige of these mongrel organiza
tions from our borders. The elec
tion has also taught another lesson
—that personal abuse will not help
any party. To succeed, you must
fight a candidate from political, and
not a private standpoint. It is
shown, too, that when the friends
of a nominee attempt to swell their
majority by appealing to republican
negroes, they are simply handling
dynamite, that will work their own
destruction. When the negroes

pose he would be the tool of Tam
many nnd its republican allies. He
would not be a democratic Mayor, i
but by the necessities of the case the :
tool of men whose chief aim now is
to defeat the democratic ticket, and
whose chief object then would be to
strengthen, by all the help that
public plunder can give, the repub
lican corruptionists, who so eagerly
desire to get their hands on this
city.
Now that the treachery of Tam
many has been so clearly exposed,
what has Mr. Walsh and other apol
ogists for and defenders of John
Kelly to say? While this man had
one hand extendedjto Mr. Cleve
land, in the other held a dagger,
ready to stab him in the back. Is
not such a traitorous all/ far worse
than an open enemy? But we do
not believe that Tammany can de
feat the democratic party this time.
“Forewarned is forearmed,” and
we believe that the intelligence and
honesty of that great stale will yet
checkmate these traitorous hypo
crites in their dirty work. The peo
ple of New York city know from
sad experience what they are to ex
pect at the hands of the thieves
and wharf-rats that comprise the
Tammany phalanx, and with the
example of Boss Tweed yet fresh
in their minds, will all good and
true citizens arise in their power
and indignation and crush this vile
ring into the earth, as they once did
before. We have never had any
confidence in Tammany Hall and its
promises, and the sooner the demo
cratic party looks upon that organi
zation as an open enemy, the better
its hope of success. Thrice has this
adder stung to death the party that
nurtured it, and it will do-so again
and again. Rather would we see
the democracy meet an honorable

of the fellow. It took these gentle

dles, and just as they were ready to
start in pursuit the men returned

escaped them. He was found at

tic on that issue. You cannot in- 1
ject radical voters into the demo- j
oratic party without weakening .
your cause. Let us profit by the i
lesson we have learned, and the 1
counties in the state where our nom- 1
inees have met with defeat be not ,
discouraged, but pick their flints :
and try it again. In Oconee the i
overwhelming victory of Mr. Grif-
feth was a Waterloo, and as much a '
matter of surprise to the friends of
that gentleman as to his opponents.
Mr. Griflcth made a ten-strike when 1
he captured the convention,and the
consequence was that many organ
ized democrats refused to accept .
him as an independent, but in voting
for him considered that they were
simply expressing a preference be
tween two democrats. The person- .
al attacks on Mr. Grifleth’s charac
ter also maddened and aroused his
friends, and made them feel that his
triumph was necessary for the vin
dication of his character. The re
turns show that the white vote was
pretty equally divided. Mr. Price
made a gallant fight, and has no
cause for mortification or regret.
He received a vote that would re
flect honor upon any man, and his
friends proved as true to his cause
as the needle to the pole. Let the
people of Oconee now accept the
verdict as hecomes good citizens.
The harsh things said during the
heat of the contest should be for
gotten and forgiven. Let reconcil
iation and a renewal of friendship
be the mission of both sides.
