“ETERNAL VIGILANCE IS THE PRICE OF
LIBERTY.**
The prohibitionists must not per
mit themselves lulled into confident
security and inactivity, by the ap
parent lethargy of the liquorites.
The hour has now arrived when we
must put in our best licks, for to
hesitate now is to lose all. We
know, lrom the best authority, that
our enemies are leaving no stone
unturned to break the force of the
prohibition movement, and as their
work is all done secretly and with
closed doors, we know not at which
point to look for attack. That they
have their emissaries, laden with
jugs of whisky, traversing the coun
try, can not be doubted. Only yes
terday the open boast was made
that the Augusta liquor-sellers had
sent them $200, which would be
augmented by donations from other
whisky centres. The lilies are now
finely drawn between suffrage bar'
terers and men who vote through
principle, and we must keep them
taut. It is hard to realize the vital

then the inspector of liquors for
Ohio, gave the following as the
composition of all the samples of
port wine he examined in our sea

and sulphuric acid, logwood, alum,
sour sugar and a little rum, with
pieces of beets, elderberries, etc.
BRANDIES.
Are brandies adulterated? Yes,
says Dr. Cox, ‘T know them to be.
I have inspected brands of various
kinds and qualities, fresh from the
custom house, freshly imported and
with the inspector’s certificate, and
yet the chemical tests give me corn

EBOKV SPEER IN BT OXE VOTE.
The party lash was freely used
to force Speer’s confirmation as a
party measure. It was through
these methods that the thing was
done. Iu .order that our people
may understand the way this unfor
tunate result was brought about, we
subjoin an extract tror: the Wash
ington National Republican on
Tuesday morning, which will am
ply confirm our statements:
“It is the duty the republican
senate owes itself and the country
to at once confirm the nomination
of Hon. Emory Speer, of Georgia,
for United States district judge. He
is pre-eminently qualified for the
position. His personal and public
character is without a spot orj blem
ish. He is a progressive citizen of
the south, and represents whatever
hopes of a better iuture the coun
try cherishes for that section. Ar
rayed against him in almost solid
phalanx is the Bourbon democracy,
because he has committed the un
pardonable sin of acting with the
republican party. As district at
torney he secured the only convic
tions of late years of the ku-klux in-
timidators. For this the democracy
hate him. He is a young man of
following in the south, and he must
be crushed or his example may be
come contagious. The investiga
tion of the charges brought against
him by his political enemies has
resulted in his complete and tri
umphant vindication. The senior
senator from Georgia stands out
alone among his party associates in
the senate and supports the nomi
nation. The democrats have drawn
party lines upon the question ot
Mr. Speer’s confirmation, and every
day they are on hand to take advan
tage of the temporary absence of
republican senators to secure his
defeat. With such a record as Mr.
Speer possesses, with his unques
tioned fitness for the position, with
the certainty that the rejection of
his appointment would he hailed
with delight by every shotgun dem
ocrat of the South, and with the
further conviction that he would be
ostracised and driven fiom thes'ate
if he failed of a confirmation, the re
publican senators should immedi
ately act in this matter. There is
no excuse for the accidental ab
sence ot senators while this ques
tion is pending. The democrats are
leaving nothing to chance, and re
publican senators will be held re
sponsible by their party if M
Speer’s nomination is not confirm
ed.”

Bosh.
Hon. James Williamson,of Jackson

and we asked him about the tamous
cotton tree discovered by the editor
of the Herald, and which created
such a sensation over the state. Mr.
Williamson says the tree is on the
farm of Mr. Adolphus Martin, and
large numbers of people are going
to see it, and they return the worst
sold out crowd you ever saw. That
this “cotton tree” is nothing but a
common Catawba bush, of whicn
there are a number in the settle

in the woods, and hence the won
der. As is well known the Ca

patch of open cotton for Mr.

of the singular tree that the hands
had found while clearing, started
out to see it. He jestingly picked up
up a lock, and sticking it one of the
burrs on the tree, handed the same
to Martin. That gentleman, in jest,
carried the same to Jefferson and

others, who at once swallowed tl e
