HOW PROHIBITION KILLS A TOWN.
One cf the principal arguments
used by the liquor side during the
prohibition contest in Athens was
that to abolish bar-rooms would be
to drive away citizens and seiiously
cripple the business of Athens. Our
city has now tried the experiment
long enough to give prohibition a
fair test, and we can now speak
knowingly and understandingly.
An interview with our merchants
elicited tjie fact that they never
knew business in all lines so pros
perous as now, and several report
an increase of irom 50 to roo per
cent, in sales over corresponding
months last year. In September
1884, there were not less than a
a.dozen vacant dwellings on College
avenue, and the same rule applied
to other sections ot the city. To
day every house on that street is
occupied, and there is a demand tor
as many more. The r c never was
so much in proving going on in
Athens as at this time, and there is
no necessity of a single mechanic
being Idle. Every factory and oth
er enterprise in our city is running
ou lull time, and there is more
work than there arc hands to 4I0 if.
Stores that have been vacant for
years are now occupied, and other
l... sint-ss Meeks are either going up
or have hern contracted for It is
the rarest thing for the police to
make an arrest, ansi the fines from
the Mayor’s const have lalien oil
76 per cent. Fights and disputes
upon thestieets are unknown, and
men who have for years squander-
ed their salaries for strong drink
.are now good, sober citizens, and
the change is even noticeable upon
the faces of their wives and chil
dren; In fact a new era ol peace,
jumper'll y and happiness has dawn
ed upon the Classic City since the
eradication of the liquor traffic, and
even the few who opposed prohi
bition are now forced to admit its
grand results, lint the most mark
ed change is in the condition and
deportment of our colored popula
tion. They a-e working better than
we ever knew before, are happier
and more prosperous, and the kind
est and best feeling now exists be
tween the two races. Those street
loafers aie fast being numbered
among the things that were, and
the negroes ot Athens are now a
thrifty, industrious, contented class
of her population. They arc fast
acquiring homes of their own, and
many of them seem as much inter
ested in the good government of
the city as the whites. Our picture
of the glorious workings of prohi
bition in Athens is not overdrawn,
but any one can come here and see
for himself- It has even done more
than the most sanguine friends of
the measure claimed for it, and the
end is not yet. Taxes will not be
increased one dollar, and the law
yers, couits and police officers,
whose occupation, like Othello’s
has well nigh gone. How any fa
ther, with little children around
him, can vote against this great

HARRIET BEECHER STOWE.
Harriet Beecher Stowe is now
seventy years old. Her last days
are being spent in the seclusion of
her comfortahle home in Hartlord,
Conn. She is cross, melancholy,
absent-minded and sell-conceited.
Her time principally occupied in
reading her “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,"
and looking over the names of the
half million women who, at her in
stance, signed a petition which she
offered to congress urging the abol
ition of slavery. In conversation
with a gentleman who recently paid
'ter a visit Mrs. Stowe remarked
that for a few years immediately
preceding the late war, while she
was puttiug forth her most strenu
ous efforts in favor of univeisal
freedom, she was constantly in
receipt of anonymous letters from
supposed southern planters of a
most ‘'insulting” character, and de
clared that in one of these letters
she received a “freshly taken” ear
of a negro. She gloats over the
downfall of the Confederacy per
haps more than any other person
living, and now in her dotage she
is egotistical enough to attribute
the altered state of national affairs
to her own individual efforts. So
far as the south is concerned Mrs.
Stowe may think just as she
pleases.
The Spiritualists say they know
all about the north pole, having
consulted the “mejums” on that
subjecr. They do not inform us of
the diameter or height of the pole,
nor how much kindling wood it
would make if sawed and split, but
they assert that it is surrounded by
green fields and warm water. It is
a place of Arcadian simplicity, and
in the centre of it is a tree grown

THE CAPTUHr OF JEFFERSON DAVIS.
The ex president of the Southern
Confederacy long has suffered sto
ries about his capture liy the Union
troops, more or less disparaging his
dignity, to ciiculate without inter
fering to contradict them. At last
a Mr. Isgrigg. of Indiana, has ex
hausted this preternatural patience
by romancing on the subject for the
purpose of injeclitig his peculiar
name into history as a savior of Mr.
Davis’life.’ In a letter to the Her
ald, Mr. Davi$ this morning breaks
a silence that has lasted more than
twenty years, to vindicate his cap-
tors from the shame of attempting
to assassinate their prisoner, Isgrigg
in his romance having reproached
a fellow officer with that in order to
glorify ’himself for vigilance and
courage. Incidentally the letter
contradicts several other feats of
imagination that appear in the Indi
ana narrative. None of them, how
ever, save a “hoop-skirt-on a-pole
in-a-wagon” story, is original with
Isgrigg, except those in which he
makes himself figure as a hero.
We suppose that there are per
sons who will ask why Mr. Davis,
having waited so long before break
ing silence, might nojL have waited
longer yet and trusted that Isgrigg’s
tale would go into limbo with its
numerous predecessors. But such
persons' ignore the old proverb
about the last straw, that breaks a
camel's hack. The claim of Isgrigg
to have saved Mr. Davis’ life is a
sufficient justification for this letter.
And .even without that occasion we
are glad that Mr. Davis has spoken
lor the purpose of redeeming on'e
of the itaost serious incidents of the
civil war from misrepresentations
which .would turn it into a farce it
they should ht accepted by history.

they have a tradition about the con-

event of the season 'took place at
New York 09 last Monday, /it
was the occasion ol the internation
al yachting race between the “Pu
ritan” on the part of America, and
the “Genesta” of Great_JBnt*in»
which resulted in a decided victory
for America. It has been an unsettled
question since iS57*as to which one
of those two nations was entitled to
“dominion over the seas.” Both
claimed the proud title, and both
were equally anxious that their
claims should be submitted to anoth
er friendly.trial on waters of m'ptual
interest. The day was fair' and
pleasant, the crowd of eager spec-,
tators tremendous and the interest
manifested on the part of both na
tion! was 1 unbounded. 1 The con
testing yachts were perfect gems of
skilled workmanship, .nothing being
spared to make then* absolutely per
fect in every particular, and When
the “Puritan” sailed out, some eigh
teen hundred yards ahead of the
“Genesta” the waters and bills
around Sandy Hook fairly trem
bled with American enthusiasm.
Wo suppose this victory will con
clusively demonstrate to the sport
ing element of Great Britain the
fact that America is solid if she is
her mother’s daughter.
A Montana Indian began raising
stock a few years ago, having at the
start only two or three head. Lately
he sold his herd for $22,000. He is
probibly of the opinion that raising
cattle is mote profitable than “rais
ing hair;” and his white neighbois
probably agree with him. At least
they would rather let him raise their
cattle than their scalps.
The Massachusetts clubof Boston
devoted the whole of Saturday al-

is the true attitude of the south in a
political sense?” when a reference
to the election returns of last No

question satisfactorily in six seconds.

Mr. D. H. Buruaby. of Owego, N. Y.,
says that his daughter was taken with a
violent cold which temlnated with Pne-

the case up and said she could live but a
few hours at most. She was in this con
dition when a friend recommended Dli.

accepted it as a last resorf, and was
surprised to find that it produced a
marked change for the better, and by
persevering a permanent cure was effect
