T. L. GANTT.
A POLITICAL CATECHISM.
The enthaeiasm over Gen. Gor
don, fanned into existence at the Da
vis celebration and kept alive by
the most desperate efforts of the
Constitution and Gen. Gordon,
through appeals to passions that
have been slumbering for over
twenty years, is now going out even
more rapidly than it was aroused.
Time enough has elapsed for the
sober-minded, sensible people of
Georgia to argue with themselves
and for reason to reassert its sway
They "ill most properly and wisely
argue:
“What has Gen. Gordon’s record
in war to do with the election ol
a governor for Georgia in times 01
perfect peace? Was not his appeal
to me an insult to my intelligence?"
“What we are called upon to
elect is a Governor—not a Generali
What are the qualifications for the
chief magistrate of a great state like
Georgia? A clear head for business
and finance, of course, and a record
in the past that will show a candi
to possess these requisites
“Now, as a good citizen, who ha
the prosperity of my grand old stati
most at heart? Must I vote for Gen
Gordon on his war record—in this
issue dead capital except in the
grateful memory ol his people—bui
whose path for twenty years 01
more has been strewn with the
most appalling financial wrecks; 01
shall I support Major A. O. Bacon
—whe served his country just
long and faithfully as did Gen. Gor
don, although only an adjutant and
part of the time a commissary—who
has made a success of whatever
undertook?”
“Did not the speeches of the two
candidates best describe their char
acters? That of Atlanta’s candidate
was a rambling, passionate, amusing
appeal, calculated to provoke
laugh and inflame anew the old war
feeling, but he did not touch on
single great public issue or answer
a question propounded by hisoppo
nent. Gen. Gordon must have
taken us for children or lools, to be
caught by such chaff. On the other
hand, the People’s candidate, Major
Bacon, gave us a plain, practical
talk—said things that we could
carry home in our minds and think
over. He spoke to us as rational
intelligent men. One speech was
idle vaporings—the other strictly
business.”
“And who brought out these
rival candidates, any way? I know
that Major Bacon was fairly enti
tied to the nomination in 1SS0, but
he bowed with patriotic grace
the dictation of his paity.
would have been nominated when
McDaniel was, but the Atlanta
Ring, when they found the conven
tion was about to centre on Bacon,
conspired to his overthrow. Now
they have imported from Florida
Gen. John B. Gordon, for no other
purpose than to again defeat and
humiliate this gentleman. Is
right that I should aid by my vote
any such infamous scheme?”
These are the arguments now go
ing on in the brains of the honest
yeomanry of Georgia, and we are
not atraid to rest the election with
them. The gauze and tinsel sur
rounding Gen. Gordon’s visit to
county soon vanishes, and when the
voters come down to sober second
thought, they are going to vote tor
the man they think will make the
best governor for Georgia. That
Atlanta Ring cannot bribe the peo
pie with offices or the hope theteof:
but they are going to vote for the
man they honestly think will best
manage the affairs of government
and most wisely disburse the money
they pay in for taxes.
We only ask every conservative,
reasoning man, who is not led ofl
by glare and glitter and appeals
passion and prejudice, to carefully
sit down and propound to himself
the above questions, and then if he
, sees fit to vote for Gen. Gordon we
have nothing to say. We have not
a particle of fear, however, on that
score.
BKN HILL AGAIN.
He
GEN. GORDON AS AINANCIERF.
It will he admitted by every one
in the state, says the Telegraph,
that we shall need a wise and cool
businessman in the gubernatorial
chair for years to come.
It has been charged in this can
vass that as a business man Gen.
Gordon is an unmitigaed failure. He
nor his friends have attempted to
answer these charges. They may
be summed upas follows:
He failed as a lawyer.
lie faded in the saw mill business.
He failed in the book agency.
He failed in lile insurance.
He failed as a planter.
He failed as a sheep ranchero.
He failed as a coal miner.
He claims to have made some
money out of a railroad enterprise,
but he did not keep it long.
He has failed as the builder of a
great international steamship and
railroad line.
1* is charged by a Washington
correspondent of the Cincinnati
Uommercial-Gazette that Gen. Gor
don, in iS8a, was tryiug with ex-
“mtmaster-General Creswell and
others to lobby a bill through con
gress to build an air line road from
Washington to New York. This
failed. Some time afterward Gen
eral Gordon, George C. Gorham and
others were mentioned in the Phil
adelphia Press as corporators in a
thirty million telephone enterprise.
This failed. It is not within our
knowledge as to how many people
failed to realize upon these several
schemes of the general
Broken iu credit and resources,
h«is now endeavoring to get the
people of Georgia to pay him aesin
for his military^Mrviusby electing
hint governor.
In about every 5,000 men you
Undone who imagines that it is on
ly necessary for him to withdraw
bis dollar subscription to a paper
to land that sheet in the happy
hunting grounds of journalism,
bring its editor peni
tent at his feet. The Banner-
Watchman flattered itself that it
had an unusually intelligent set of
subscribers, but it seeems that
somehow a black sheep had crept
into our flock—but we are 1 id of
him now, Allah be praised. Mon
day we received a sweet-scented
epistle from an irate subscriber in
Oconee, stating that be could not
longer take a paper that oppose!,
that immortal patriot, etc., Gen.
Gordon, and to stop his subscrip
tion, but we could keep the little
arrears still due. Thus on a calm,
h.ippv day, when we thought that
all around us was peace and love,
me upon u., like .1 clapjol’ thunder
rom a clear sky, this stunning and
aid blighting announcement to stop
my paper! As a natural conse
quence, the first thoughts that
flashed over us were: “Can we
tand this calamity?” “Can the Ban
ner- Watchmap endure the loss ol
dollar-a-year subscription and
still keep out of the clutches of the
sheriff or from the brink of the
bankruptcy?” Ah! the irate Gor-
donite evidently felt hi« power and
knew that he was levelling at our
journalistic head a crushing blow,
lor the words ol liis note proved
that. It was one of ihose tegulai
louble-back-acting, stem-winding,
red-hot-thumb screw epistles, that
only a two-tor-a-nickle man knows
how to get some fellow to pen for
him when he has so recklessly
squandered a dollar. We know that
night he saw in hisdteams the hag
gard lace of the B.-W. editor and
his gang of half-starved little ones,
clutching to the rkirts of his old
jeans coat and begging in piteous
language that he would again re
new and save them from perishing;
he saw that same editot, appalled
by such a fearful financial loss, and
with a hope of soothing this irate
subscriber’s ruffled feelings, flop
ping his paper over from Bacon to
Gordon; but he would make the
fellow still lurther humble himself
before granting his most gracious
pardon. lie saw in his sleeping
vision those sarcastic words of coun
sel that his “town friend writ for
him,” searing like a hot iron into
the Bacon-coated conscience of the
editor who dared to take a position
in opposition to the wishes of one
liis cash-in-advance subscribers. He
would not simply stop his paper;
but let the editor know why he
did so. We must admit that the
effect of this immense loss was most
fearful, and for awhile we saw no
thing but ruination and starvation
ahead of us; but when our
book-keeper informed us that he
had, in the past week, added be
tween 600 anu 700 new names to
our list, all cash-in-advance subscri
bers, too, we were considerably
“hope up,” and as we were prom-
ised as many more in a few days, de
cided that by reducing the salary of
our devil, and lopping ofl' one meal
a day, we might survive and with
stand the loss of the dollar from the
Gordonite of Oconee.
But let us whisper a word of ad
vice in the ear of our indignant
Oconee friend: We have been in
journalism now for 12 years, and
you are the third man who tried
that old “gag” on us. Now, while
we appreciate our patrons, there is
not a man on our books but who is
at liberty to discontinue his paper
at any time and all the money due
him will be refunded. But we beg
you, for the credit of yourself and
the good name of your county,
don’t show your ignorance again by
penning such a note of explanation.
It is a matter of the most perfect
indifference to us whether you take
the Banner-Watchman or not. , In
fact, unless a man is susceptible to
reason, and when he manifests such
an arbitrary spirit as yourself, we
areglad to have him stop the paper,
for it is our boast that we have the
•nost intelligent set of subscribers
ol any paper in Georgia. Again,
we don’t care a punched nickel
whether you are for Gordon, Bacon
or Felton, for we do not suppose
that your vote will either wreck or
save the state. Your paper is stop
ped, our irate Gordon friend from
Oconee, and let us whisper
another word of advice
in your intelligent cars:
If you want a fair and impartial
newspaper—something that will
give both sides of the gubernatorial
question with most exact accuracy,
send ofl'at once and take the great
Atlanta Constitution. It is just
what »ou need at this critical junc
ture in your political existence, and
we guarantee no cure, no pay.
At last Gen. Gordon, through an'
anonymous correspondent in the
Atlanta Constitution, has broken
silence as to what he refused to ac
cept from Ben Hill. It appears that
he was told by Ben Hill and Col.
Grant that he could have a share in
the lea,e of the W. & A. R. R. This
is all. This is the sum total of what
Ben Hill did or said according to
the correspondent. What in the
name of common sense and com
mon justice to Ben Hill did Gen.
Gordon mean by saying that Ben
Hill had ofleredliim a share and his
“conscience” would not allow him
to accent it? Did he mean to say
that Ins “conscience” was belter or
purer or clearer than Ben Hill’s?
Why say his “conscience” would
not allow him to accept? Did he
t know, and cannot he ever be
made to understand, that the use of
this language in that connection is a
reflection on Ben Hill’s integrity ?
If he wanted to tell the people of
Americus that he had been offered
a share in that lease through Ben
Hill, and that he had declined it,
why not do so and stop there? No
friend of Mr. Hill's would have been
wounded by that statement. But
when he goes on and says that he
refused it because his “conscience’
would not let him ac
cept it, there and then
lie wronged the memory of Ben
Hill and insulted every friend of hi
who is living. It is the imputa
tion of corruption conveyed by the
use of the word “conscience,” that
hurls. If his “couscience” would
not allow him to accept, what sort
of a light does that put Ben Hill in
for offering? It the “compunctious
visitings” of Gordon’s monitor
warned him not to touch it, how
could Beil Hill offer it or hold the
same himself? He might as well
have ‘aid in so many words.that
Ben Hill's conscience suffered him
to do what his (Gordon’s) prevent
ed him from doing. The contrast
between his own rectitude aud Mr.
Hill’s, as given in his own chosen
words, is the very spirit of pharisa-
ism. Two men went up into the
temple to pray; the one a Pharasee
and the other a Publican. The
Pharasee prayed with a loud voice
and said, “I thank God that I am
not as other men are, or even as this
Publican.” But the Publican did
not even lift up his eyes, but stood
afar oft and beat upon his breast and
said, “Lord be merciful to me a
sinner.” What was the verdict?
The Publican went down to his
house justified rather than the other.
Gen. Gordon is a Pharasee of the
Pharasees when -he comes to this
share of the lease. He thanked
God with a “loud voice at Americus
that he was not as other men, such
as John T. Grant and Aleck Ste
phen*,or even as this Publican Ben
Hill.” They took shares, and they
offered him one, but his “con
science - ’ rose supreme and he re
jected it. It is sickening. Here
are two men in their graves, as pure
as he, and here is this political Gas
con parading his “conscience” to
the people to elevate himself at their
expense. If Ben Hill and Aleck
Stephens could hear it they would
turn over in their cofflns.

Dr Felton is not speaking any
more in the interest of Bacon than
