WEEKLY BANNER-WATCHMAN Tl/ESDAY JUNE 1886. BANNER-WATCHMAN ornoiAL organ or City of Athens and Clarke, Oconee & Bank*. ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION RATES: Daily, $5; Sunday, $1 .... Weekly, $1 ,T. L. GANTT. ELEGANT ENGLISH. We were told by n gentleman on yesterday, that in endeavoring to convey the idea that a proposed delegate had retired in favor of his elder brother, Gen. Gordon used the followiug words: “He pivt up to his big bud." This man is a can didate for Governor of Georgia. He will, if elected, he looked upon at home and allroad as the pioper ex ponent .of the chaiactei, the man ners and the education of our peo ple. If he speaks the English after the above fashion, the impression he wiil make upon an educated stranger will he unpleasant. In the long list of illustrious men who have adorned the chair of state from Oglethorpe down to McDaniel, there never has been one yet who could not speak decent English. Gov. McDaniel speaks it with dif ficulty, but when >t does come, it is pure, and his difficulty does not arise from want of knowledge. lie writes with ease, grace and precis- WOULD YOU ? Il you wanted a business partner, would you select Gen. Gordon? If you wanted a president for a bank in which your money is investbd, is not tie the last man that you would choose? If you wanted a manager fora factory, or any other institu tion-where busines tact is required, would you engage the Atlanta can didate for governor? You would not, for the simple reason that you have no confidence whatever in Gen. Gordon’s capacity to manage business, and know that his whole file has been one succession of fail ures. And yet you are willing to elect him to manage the intricate business of our state government, and in which every man, woman and child in Georgia has a personal interest. Is there any reason or justice ip. this: IfGen. Gordon can not even successlully manage a sheep ranch, what will he do with the multitudinous and complicated business of our state? This is a se rious question that voters should ask themselves. While not im pugning the integrity and honesty of Gen. Gordon, we do charge that he is utterly unfit and incompetent to guide the helm of state, and refet to the disastrous failure of every- thingthat lie has undertaken to man age in confirmation of the charge. We appeal to the fair-minded peo- THAT ATTEMPTED BRIBERY. .» Mr. Gantt also publishes a “roorback” to the effect that the Gordon managers bad attempted to bribe the editor of the Hartwell Sun - to support Gordon. The Hartwell Sun thus disposes of the un savory yam: “Tlie editor of this paper wants it dis tinctly understood that be does not con sider and has never so stated, that any attempt has been made to bribe him in the gubernatorial campaign by an agent of the Atlanta Constitution, or anybody else, and has never authorized the pub lication of anything upon which the in ference of bribery might be predicated.” It remains to be seen whether the Banner-Watchman will give this denial the flaming prominence, in royal rhetor ical English, which it gave to the un founded and indefensible charge. We have never vet denied an act ol The Bacon men are not spending one dollar in this campaign, white the Gordon leaders are Hooding the country with money. Guidon’s boom is not so unani mous now since those little batches of ring-hound counties have acted. Dr. I-'elton says he will not be a candidate lor Governor under any circumstances. This is a settler. ion. But here is an aspirant for this high office, who talks in a dia- j pie of Georgia not to place anv man lect which is well-known and iia> •** *' ,c head »l our stale govein- famifiar surroundings, but w hich if heard from the lips ol one occupy ing high official station would ex cite a smile of derision. We un derstand that this is but one of the many ungainly expiessions. which are in constant use by Gen. Gui don. He ought to know that among a cultivated people, such as a ma jority of the people of this state are. there is no sympathy for coarse language coining Irom one who es says to be their representative. This maysecmtohi.il anil his directors a small matter, but if so it reveals the existence of greater things which are very objectiona ble. There is something due to the station lie is seeking and that which he is supposed to occupy. When a candidate for a high office goes before the people in public addresses and says with a grimace, “I’ll git thar, hoys,” and “I’m in for this thing, you bet,” and who tells the story of the dug and the pitch fork when many ladies are in his audience, he may not be committing crimes, hut he is making himself ridiculous. If lie should he elected he would make the state ridiculous. There is a certain dignity necessary and proper, to be observed by him who occupies or seeks high office in Georgia. Our people have not been accustomed, nor were their fathers before them accustomed to be ruled over hv men ol whose manners they were ashamed. The people of Georgia arc as genteel as the people of England. Suppose Mr. Gladstone should regale the voters of any part of the United Kingdom with such language as we have above quoted from Gen. Gor don, the people would be ashamed of him, and his influence would be destroyed. Such expressions would suit, perhaps, the civilization of Ne vada or Utah, hut they are out of place ill Georgia or any other place inhabited bv cultivated people. We clip ped our information from the Franklin County Register, and it was in full keeping with the cam paign as conducted by some of Gen. Gordon's leaders. But since the paragraph was published we have obtained additional informa tion, that we will give to the public and to the great Atlanta organ. A gentleman who is on the most inti- mate terms with the San editor stated to us that while a bribe was not tendered Mr. McGill an agent for Gen. Gordon offered to buy $500 or even even $ ,000 worth of papers if he did support the ring candidate. This is not a hrihe(?), but first cousin to one, and we do not pre sume that Mr. McGill will deny that such an offer was made to him. More than one gentleman in t-lberl told us that a Gordon advance- agent was closeted with the Sun aditor for some time on the day that Major Bacon spoke in Hartwell, and Mr. McGill was overheard to _ I say, “I cannot doit," and other sen- a fences of refusal. Since the veruc- o g 1 ity of his friends is brought into § ! question, Mr. McGill will doubtless j tel! the public exactly what did oc- | cur, and let‘them judge as to wheth- ‘ er a bribe was intended or not.
