But this article in tne Madisonian so mani- testly shows that its editor is still chafing under the humiliating and ■noniiy mg defeat inflicted on him self and his paper by hi* own peo ple and in his own county, and that he lias singled out the Banner- Watchman editor upon whom to vent his spleen as one 01 the causes of his'downfall tnat in vindication ot ourself, we must expose Mi. Tnat is a mode of warfare we ucVi-r u-e. lui the Madisonian seem, to have a patent on it, from the manner iu winch that paper has been blin.ily striking at not only candidates, hut private citizens, t..at visited it town. Neither can one worJ that we have sa d or w^.ttcu about Gcii Gordon since his nomination be possibly turiureo into inconsistency with a single editorial that we hud penned during tne campaign When the democratic party o Georgia, in convention as-einbled, fixed i<* seal upon John B. Gordon he that day and hour became the Banner-Watchman’s candidate, and as such w c declared and accepted him; slid it occasion arises we shall work tor his election as hard as we did for Major Bacon’s nominal on. Had Mr. Reese sccuicd the nomi nation of his party in this district, he, too, would have l.ccn our can didate. Editor Blackburn received our paper every day during tne late congressional campaign, and we now publicly defy him to quote tnerefrom one line or word that can possibly be tortured ihto bitterness a ainst either Scab Reese or his triends, unless it be that miserable “K. K. K.” correspondent, whose cowardly silence endorsed as true every woid that we penned about him. It is easy enough, Mr. Black burn, to yell "slander'’ and “abuse,” as you did during the late congres sional campaign, but we now de mand that you make your charge good by quoting on.e item from our paper of a slanderous or abusive character against either Reese or his friends, or stand self-convicted of having misrepresented a brother journalist; and we also ask you to point out a ty article that we have written since Gen. Gordon’s nomination inconsistent with our editorials during the campaign. To open the eyes of the Madisonian ed itor, and to show him tile light in which his own candidate holds that | aper, we have only to refer to a little sentence that fell fiom the lips of M'. Seaborn Reese during his speech at Concord, in Elbert county. In apologizing for hisde- fcat in Morgan county, among other reasons be gave was that h** was supported thtic by a most “unfortu nate editor,” or words to that effect. Did a journalist ever receive a se verer stab? When a man that he has been so ardently, but vainly, supporiing.^saw fit to publicly at tribute his defeat to a paper’s ad vancing his cause, we think it high time for that journal to retire from the political arena and seek some other field of usefulness than trying to make congressmen. Wc are ot the opinion that the Madison Madisonian bears the sole distinc tion among Georgia journals of being repudiated from the stump by the candidate that it was supporting. We did not intend to refer to this humiliating thrust at Editor Black- bum, but for his unnecessary unin tent cd attack on the Banner- Watchman. To substantiate what we say, we reler the repudiated ed tor toGapt. Carlton, who was on lhe rostrum with Mr. Reese, as als> to ike atid ence picscni. MilledgevilCe, Ga., Aug. 7.— “Hanged uy the neck until you are dead, dead, dead. May the Lorn have mercy on vour soul.” These were the last words ol Judge Law- ton to Frank Humphries to-day. Humphries was sitting near hi> counsel when these solemn word- were spoken. He looked gravt and careworn when he fir-t enter ed (he court room, but befote he was there I01; he looke 1 as hasp as ever. Abaut 4 o’clock the d irnn ed man was'aske.i co rise and an swer the question: “What have vnu tn say why sentence of death should not be pronounced upon yon?” He replied in a firm voice: “Nothing, except I am an innocent man.” ilumphries looked a* calm as could he, and no one who did not know him would have thought him to be the perpetrator of one 01 the most horrible crimes on record in Georgia. He will be hanged on Sept. 34. It is probable that Humphries will be carriad to M i- con forconfinement.until the dayo' execution. Tbe hanging will be private.
