There ii one matter to which we wish to call the attention of President Thomas and his directory. There waa wide spread dissatisfaction oret the racing. Men who are not given to exaggeration, and who are seldom wrought up to the point of making public denunciation, de clared openly on the grounds that some of the races were “jockeyed.” To us it seemed so, too, but then our experience on the race course and in matters that pertain, to the sport, is too limited for our opinion to have much weight. We know, however, that dissdtisfaction exists, and the comment upon the races, as elicited by onr reporter, has been unanimously condemnatory of auch methods pursued We well know that President Thomas and his associates are not responsible for this state of things. We feel sure that the judges have been honest and impar tial. We wish we could say as much for the jockeys. In 1880 its population was less than in 1870orin 1860; to ths stranger looking at these figures the natural in ference would be that the coupty was retrograding, hut not so; between 1870 sad 1880 a slice larger than the present coanty was cutoff and tbe increase in Clarke’s population can be readily seen by the small difference in the inhabi tants as shown in the census of 1870 and 1880. The city of Athens has a popula tion considerably larger than that of Oconee, and about three times as much as the population of Clarke, exclusive of the city. Whether the country people have been moving to town or not, tbe population of the county outside the city is very stationary. Foreign bora citi zens are few in Clarke—the Jews pre dominate, and the Germans come next The Irish have but* small contingent. *•* I zee the Bansfr- Watcuax endeavors to give the weekly cotton receipts of the city, the sales, stock on hand, and the humber of bags consumed ?y spinners. A commendable piece of enterprise, but a herculean teak. I had something to do with a newspaper once in Athens and the same effort waa made. No exchange to get the receipts from, so a man had to be sent every week to the warehouses and to merchants who took cotton in trade and get their figures. At first the merchants and cotton men kicked—at least some of them did, and only consent ed to give the figures when the promise was made that the paper* would not in dividualise or toll one firm what another had received. The promise was sacred- ly kept, _ though the importunity o the curious was great. There was no mistake in onr compilation of the figures, but there was something wrong some where, for at the expiration of about three monte the cotton receipts of the town approximated seventy-five thou sand bales, and it was a bad year fot cotton, too. I have always thought that had the plan been continued, Ath ens’ cotton receiwts would have gone to a couple hundred thousand bale*.
