A SCANDAL IN STONE.
If printed reports are true a genuine
sensation has burst upon the General
Aaaemblyfin Atlanta.
Mr. George K. Eager, Manager ot the
Mariotta ft North Georgia Railroad Com
pany, and of the American Marble Com
pany, gives a version of the resent suits
against the the railroad, which is start
ling, and if substantiated is scandalous.
Ho say that Gen. Phillips, of Marietta,
who retired from this enterprise on ac
count of dissatisfaction, has been bar-
rassing tho company about the treatment
of their convicts. Mr. Eager says that
at the instance of a friend of Gen. Phil
lips, he bought out Uen. Phillip's inter
est in the road at glOyOOO to purchase
peace and good will, but the latter, in
spite of this , soon renewed his hostility
and has since hept it up. Soon after the
Legislature of 1881 and 1885 adjourned,
two soils were commenced against the
road for $1UU,<JI>J each for forfeiture, as
they claimed, for not recording the bonds.
While these suits were brought in the
name of one power, yet Mr. Eager de
clares he had every reason to believe that
that it was instigated by these
parlies These suits had hard
ly gotten col-l before another suit was
brought by Mr. Harrison, aided by Gen
eral Phillips, in the name of some stock
holders which they claimed to represen
in which they asked for a receiver for th*
road. In this case, whiie .lodge Brown
was judge of the Blue Ridge Circuit,
they jumped over his head and sought
out J udge Fain to bring their case before
him.
M r. Eager says he was afterwanl ap
proached by messengers from Messrs.
Harrison and Phillips, stating that the
suits would bo settled if $50,000 were
paid to plaintiffs. The amount was re
duced tefo.OOU, but witness still refused.
Eager says that James P. Harrison, who
has sonic marble interests ir. North Geor
gia, came 10 him anil wanted the Marietta
ft North Georgia Railroad and the Ameri
can Marble Company to go in with ho;
company ar.d tho Georgia Marble com
pany and put up about four thousand
dollars with which to carry a bill
through the legislature changing the
contract of the capitol from oolitic lime
stone to Georgia marble. Harrison stated
that four thousand dollars would do the
work, and if they got the hill through
they could combine in tbeir bids and
make a large amount of money out of th c
State, as it would be restricted to Geer-
gia marble, anil control all the quar
ries. Eager says he refused ■ to go into
this. Mr. Harrison, Eager says, went
to work with a lobby anyhow but failed
in his scheme. Subsequent effforts to
blackmail the Marietta A North Georgia
Railroad have been made by Mr. Har-

The presence of rex-resident Hayes
in Atlanta as a member of the prison
congress brings to public view a ’ man
who was once as prominent as he is now
without following. While l’resident of
thc United States Mr. Hayes passed
through Georgia, and was the recipient
of course, of distinguished attention.
But for the printing of of two columns of
mediocre minion in tjic papers, no one
would now know that he was in Geor
gia He is one of the humblest of all
private citizens, a n<1 — illustration of
how d«e«ely a man who was once at the
i.ead of this republic can sink into pri-
vato citizenship. IYobably no ex-Presi-
dent has ever attracted so little attention
or had so small a following. And yet
President Hayes’ administration was most
respectable. Compared to Gen. Grant's,
it was a master-piece of law and order.
It was strictly a constitutional govern
ment and possessed enough stamina to
ensure a Republican succession. Most
of his appointments, however, were of a
colorless nature, many of his Southern
selections being good men compared to
Grant’s appointees, but really without
strength st home or official capacity in
place. The impotance of mugwumpery
was never more fully shown than in the
case of President Hayes. No man owed
more to party; no man did less for his
party. His party dropped him quick
ly and left him to defend alone in the
face of his opponents a title that was
questionable and a government that was
weak. »-
