.1”' loou< — DON’T BE DECEIVED. Wo are obliged to regard the movc- nient which Is seclring to Uke tho control of tho Georgia Central Railroad from iU managers and present owners as a threat- oned calamity. We can see in it only a speculative movement on the one hand or the advance of a mammoth monopoly on the other. What possible interest can a Kansas City or a Boston or a Xcw York syndicate have in the Central Bail- read of Georgia save to extort large divi dends from the stock or to consolidate some large system with its roadway V In either event the eontrol of this great .home enterprise the only railroad » the South which is owned and operated for its own pcople-wtll pass from ,,r,s- rovert to the Standard Oil WALES WYNTON. out hands and rev Company, or some financial octopus which would have as much interest tn the nntAr.il development of the State a: Sherman's army had in its march ch to the i „f Southern railroad In the absorption of Southern systems, one led intact, true to the devoted to and the wre line alone has remain, people who have built it film farmers and merchants . of Mr. thi* interest ot State. Thanks to the wisdom v, this Georgia system wasrivet- stroiiger than the and has up to this rv inroad of consolidat- lativ of- f. of the Wadi C.l together Avha'.an leagu time resisted w inc Lower and every overture of spent- ■ interest. We trust the people of r „i.,_ s0 far as they have it in their v. r will hold their stock in their own ^session and vote for the present 6ian- ini nl of the Central Railroad ,y. Parties in Athens have I fabulous prices for theii sick, tubers have been offered twelve hundred and fifteen hundred dollars for the right to vote their shares. Let these people hold the stock themselves, it is good security. It is worth one hundred and more, l-' t them revoke their proxy grant and vote the stock in their own in terest. They are working against their | la st advantage who are led away by such gilded overtures. We believe the interests of Georgia de mand the retention of Capt. Raoul »"d r of Gen. Alexander for the of the Central Railroad. i,hl la- the head of his home | rule his railroad as | rgia interest. 1 he the mere creature of a foreign corporation and could not follow his own policy of working the road of which he would he the nominal head. is not too late we trust tho Athens r Georgia stockholders will hold their stock and defeat the Ah x- V^ander movement. When prices the ley Vresidl The on part v and would *' a Southern and a other would t« If it and lie fast to ider 'h-igh, jmlg Monday mo ling a funeral procession filed slowly ( trough the city as a dull November mist settled upon the dead leaves and cloaked the sun dismally in the sky. Not n hell note was heard; few, in deed, outside of those immediately charg ed with the reception of his body, knew what hour the remains of Wales Wynton would be buried, A number of carriages fell in behind the hearse, however, as it passed from the depot to the grave, but tliero were numbers more who would have paid the respect of their presence or sent tlowers to bo placed with those forwarded with hisbody.had they known the hour for tho sepultuTe. In many- respects Wales Wynton wasa r markable young man. Born within a few miles of Athens, lie was compelled by the death of his father to forego the advantages of an education right here at his door, and while most boys were pre paring for a college life he songht the counter, where ho earned a good liveli hood and assisted his mother and sister at a time young lads are serious cares to their parents. Wynton seems nev er to have needed looking af ter. lie was a bright, animated boy. His eye wasa model of vigilance and kindliness—sparkling with suggestion d softening with sympathy. He would attract attention anywhere, and the writ er well remembers while once on a visit to Athens, looking for a correspond ent and agent for the Augusta Chronicle, he sought the young shoe clerk, who had already been a casual contributor to the columns of the Basnkr-Watchman. The t hronicle retained him as its repre sentative until lie was ottered the place of M neon correspondent of the Atlanta Constitution. He was thoroughly in love with his work, lie was aptness and alertness it- | self, lie was a tireless anddeVOt- I ed ri porter. In Macon he became Central I popular, socially and professionally, lie mad> the Atlanta paper an institution in Macon. No one could have measured his prospivtsshad he not been beguiled and betray ed at a time when his career was almost made. in Birmingham, with forces of a new city throbbing with life and teemin; with, mines of wealth, Wales Wynton I would have made his mark and his for tune had not his constitution been under mined by hard work and exposure. 11 moved ill a white heat, where enterpris after enterprise w as springing full armored from the earth—and with his ardent, on thusiastic nature, wore himself out before his life was well begun. Most fascinating and useful of all professions, journalism is one of the most jealuos and exacting. It requires strength as well a- sense, and it requires endurance as I wll as inspiration. It needs a stran: c unhinalion of phlegm and defo it on. A man of ardent nervous na- i tllre oil) consume himself in the tire I with which he illumines his work. Sen- I tiiuent soon tires, weakness quickly I develops under its exactions, and the very mail who loves it most keenly, I succumbs beneath it most quickly. ! Wales Wy nton had energy and great TWO NEW RAILROADS. If our advices he true, and we see no reason now to doubt them, the railroad outlook for Athens is brighter perhaps than any’other city in Georgia. The progress of the work on the Ma con & Athens railroad is certain. It is not apt to be deflected from its Athens course this late in the day, and whatever connection or combination may be made it is certain • to enter this city over the route projected. The Macon & Athens railroad is now in the hands of the stake driver and excavator, and the time when jugglery’or financial bars could be used to deflect it, seems to have passed. The line will come into the eity or under the city in a very short time. The Georgia, Carolina & Northern Kailroad has put in remarkable signs of vitality. This project seems to be more than a feint or a manoeuvre for position by the Pennsylvania Central. Survey ors are at work and the charter for the railroad has already passed one branch of the General Assembly. That charter gives terminal facilities in Atlanta of unusual value, anil the grant of the States’ franchise will be a valuable step in the great work of that system. The importance of this line has been spoken of again and again. It wilt cross-cut the territory of the new roads of the Geor gia Central system in Carolina, which it will drain for Athens and Atladta, and it will bring Elbert and intermediate coun try close to the doors of Athens. It will be a flank movement of the Augusta and Chattanooga, so far as we are concerned, 4 nd will give us the cream of the Savan nah Valley on both sides of the river.
