DEMOCRACY WILL TRIUMPH.
There can now be no donbt of tho elec
tion of the Democratic ticket. In the
State of New York several organisa
tions, hitherto Republican, have
come over to the Democracy and
pledged their votes to Hill, Cleveland
and Thurman. These accessions
give to the Democracy an additional
support of nearly 75,000 votes.
This will insure the election of the
State ticket and a majority for Cle
veland in the neighborhood of 100,-
()t:0.
The State of Indiana may be put
down as certain in the Democratic
ranks. .State pride will not go so far
with the hard-working industrious
mechanics of the sovereign state of
Indiana, as to induce them to vote for
the Republican ticket when the stand
ard liearer of the party has shown
himself the enemy of their interests.
These gallant men have raised their
voire in protest and defiance, and
leaving the party to which they no
longer owe allegiance, they will rally
around the grand old dag of the De
mocracy, beneath whose folds they
can feel that their interests are pro
tected, and their labor worthy of its
hire. Then there is California—
Republican since 1876 when Tilden
carried it by a few thousand majority.
Now it is overwhelmingly Democratic,
and will so declare itself in the com
ing election in Novenilier. The atti
tude which the Republican candidate
has always assumed towards the
Chinese exclusion bill, and which, ir.
spite of his ill-concealed efforts to
dodge in his recent letter of accept
ance, he still holds, has lost the Re
publican party at least thirty thous
and votes in that State. The people
of California, in their affliction of
Chinese immigration, which annually
throws upon their coasts thousands
ot the mongrel,idoloitrious pagans of
the Chinese empire, have no other
choice hut to vote against the can
didate and the party which shows no
sympathy for their distress, ami offers
no relief for tlieir affliction. The
states of Michigan and Massachusetts
will also undoubtedly go Democratic.
'What brilliant prospects light up the
path of the Democracy to glorious
and overwhelming victory. With
victory again achieved who will dare
assert that the grand old party will
not retain I101 ascendancy for many
years to come.
ROME AND HER EXPOSITION.
The citizens of Rom* have decided
to hold their Exposition next week.
Although we have our doubts as to
the expediency of such a venture in
view of the unsettled condition of
thinfM throughout the state, we
refrain from opposing the step which
the noble city of the mountains has
seen fit to take. Loyal to the inter
ests of our great and growing com
monwealth, our idea was that an ex
position at this time,when everything
is unsettled and uncertain, would
not do justice to the resources of our
State and fitly advertise them to the
vast crowds which might come from
other sections and beyond our gates.
Since,'however, she hm chosen her
course after free discussion, and to
all appearances, a calm, deliberate
consideration, our hand and heart is
witli her, and we hid her God-speed
and success in her pariotic enterprise.
May her Exposition be worthy of the
enterprise and pluck of her great
people.
A NOTABLE EXAMPLE.
The estate of the late Mr. R. H
Richards, of Atlanta, has been ap
praised to he worth $608,000 most o*
which is invested iu government
bonds and railroad stock. The career
of Mr. Richards is a notable example
cf that success which comes about by
presevering effort, and a fixed, settled
purpose in life. A poor boy, without
friends, or the means of education,
his wonderful success, has been the
acliicvment of his own strong arm and
his own vigorous intellect. Let
Southern youths imitate the exam
ple of this truly great man.

The Republican fund is again ex
hausted, and Chairman Quay is pas
sing around the hat. The trust Com
panies are not shelling out with as
liberal hand as in past years, and
there are no office holders whose sala
ries can be assessed, lienee the cam
paign barrel lias assumed tlie dimen
sions of a keg and the joints of the
jawbone politicians are becoming stiff
for the lack of greasing.
The fever situation in Jacksonville
remains about the same. The report
for yesterday was 143 cases and four
deaths. In Fernandina twelve new
cases are reported, and the people are
begining to entertain alarming fears
of its prevalence. There are four
new cases reported from Decatur Ala
Cases are also reported from various
other small places, but they do not
exceed one or two. It is hoped that
nature will interfere with the prog
ress of the scourge, by sending an
early frost. If not and the weather
continues as at present unfavorable,
God only knows the ravages that lie
in the path of this destructive epi
demic.
The freshet after traveling down
iha beautiful valley of tlie Savannah,
carrying havoc and desolation in its
course, lias wound up its full work by
sweeping away tlie rice crops of the
planters around Savannah. The loss
to tlie rice planters at tlie mouth of
the Savannah is put down at $350-
000, on the Ogeechee at $250,000,
and the results on the Altamaha have
been equally disastrous.
Tlie Fair which was to be held at
Columbus in a few days, has been
stponed until the 15th of Novem-
T, when it will formally be opened.
The postponement is a wise one, and
the fair will he a greater success at
that time than it would be now.
The senseless panic over the Flori
da epidemic is dying away iu every
healthy, salubrious city. The filthy
and malarial towns will continue to
be uneasy until ice forms an inch
thick.
THE UNIVERSITY.
In spite of the false reports which
have Wen circulated through the
country in regard to the health of
Athens, the University has opened
under the most favorable auspices.
In view of the several cases of fever
which were reported in Athens prior
to the commencement, all of which
were due to thoughtless imprudence,
but which the slanderous tongues of
tlie University’s enemies have mag
nified and scattered broadcast over
the country as arguments against
tlie health of our city—this, together
with the unsettled condition of af
fairs, due to the failure of the
board to elect an official head on last
commencement, influenced many to
believe that the attendance on this
se ssion of the college would be consid
erably reduced. But tlie University
has opened with bright prospects for
another year. The hearts of her
friends have been made glad; the
spirits of her enemies have wavered.
She has risen above tlie adversities
that thronged around her, and has
shown herself secure from the arrows
which malice bos aimed at her des
truction. The crisis through >7hich
she has passed, in which her brave
sons, scattered as they are all over
the South, have defiantly met the as
sault of the enemy, and made tlie
slanderer the victim of his own malig
nant tongue, proves that in the hosts
which she can summon to her aid in
danger, that she stands invincible to
the power of her enemies.
May the grand old college move
smoothly on in her prosperous ca
reer, defiant of her enemies, and proud
of tlie thousands of her sons who have
made her illustrous.
New York is a great city. She
has subscribed one hundred thousand
dollars for the yellow fever sufferers.
This is as much as tlie government
appropriation.
THE PER CENT OF DAMAGE-
According fo an article in yester
day’s Constitution, the damage to the
crops in various parts of the State is
as follows:
North Georgia—Cotton 10 per cent
—Corn 13 per cent.
Middle Georgia—Cotton 19 por
cent—Corn 13 per cent.
East Georgia—Gotten 23 per cent
—Corn 14 per cent.
South Georgia—Cotton 21 per cent
—Corn 9 per cent.
Southwest Georgia—Cotton 18 per
cent—Corn 7 per cent.
The a\ erage damage to the cotton
crop of the state is 19 per cent, and
to that of corn 11 per cent. The
showing is not quite .as bad as was at
first supposed. Let the farmers take
courage, and resolve to make the best
of their misfortunes.

VALUE OF THE WORLD'S RAILROAD
The railroads of the world are to
day worth frotn twenty-five to thirty
thousand million dollars. This pro
bably represents one4enth of the total
wealth of civilized nations, and one-
quarter if not one-third of their inves
ted capital. It is doubtful whether
the aggregate plant used in all manu
facturing industries can equal it in
value. The capital engaged in bank
ing is but a trifle beside it The
world’s whole stock of money of every
kind—gold, silver and paper—would
purchase only a third of its railroads.
Yet these facts by no means meas
ure the whole importance of the rail
road in the modern industrial system.
The business methods of to-day arc in
one sense the direct result of improv-
sd means of transportation. The rail
road enables the large establishment
to reach the makets of the world with
its products; it enables the large city
to receive its food supplies, if necessar
ry, from a distance of hundreds or
thousands of miles. And while it
thus favors the concentration of capi
tal, it is in itself an extreme type of
this concentration. Almost every
distinctive feature of modern business,
whether good or bad, finds in railroad
history at once its chief cause and its
fullest development.—Arthur T.
Hadley, in Scrihuer’s.

MACON AND THE STATE FAIR.
Macon has shown her usual good
senso in postponing the State
Fair for an indefinite time.
The Fair was to have taken
place in two weeks, but the condition
of Macon at presen* renders it inadvisa
ble to hold it at that time. The Fair
to be held at such a time would tend
to make the quarantine less effective
and cause a greater spread of the fever.
Besides at this time the Fair would
not do justice to the State. We com
mend the wisdom of the directors in
their indefinite postponement.

MONEY FOR JACKSONVILLE*
Itev. J. C. Davis is muk’ug an ef
fort to get donations of money for
the Jacksonville sufferers. He ear
nestly appeals to the citizens of
Athens to help. So far Athens, as
a city, has done nothing. A few lib
eral hearted and sympathetic persons
have contributed small amounts.
These amounts do not do justii-3 to,
nor are they a real expression ox, the
known liberality of the people of
Athens. We hope the appeal of Mr.
Davis will be heartily and liberally
responded to.
The next Georgia House of Repre

telligent body that has assembled in
several years. While this is not say

gratulation, that the important affairs
to come before the next legislature,
will be in the hands of an able and
more sensible body of men.

AUGUSTA AND JACKSONVILLE.
Hurrah for Augusta! In spite of
her own recent calamity, and her own
severe sufferings, her car has not
been hushed to the sufferers beyond
her gates, and she comes to the front
with valuable assistance to her
stricken sister city. In sending forth
the veteran nurse, Col. Miles Olive,
whose hoary locks have whitened in
service of the hospitals and sick
homes of our country, she has made
a valuable addition to the gallant
noble hearted few, who at the peril
of their own lives, are battling with
the awful scourge which has blighted
the once prosjs-rous city of Jackson

CARLISLE ON DEMOCRATIC SUCCESS
In a recent interview of the politi
cal situation Mr. Carlisle said; “I
feel quite sure ot Democratic Micceu.
Unless 1 am greatly mistaken we will
carry all the State* heretofore classed
as doubtful, and some others besides.
There are many reasons why 1 enter-
taifl this opinion, hot it is sufficient
to say generally that I think Mr.
Cleveland much stronger personally
as a candidate than he was in in 1884,
and I am satis jed the Democratic
party is stronger as an organization
than it was then. Mr. Cleveland lias
given the country a clean, honest and
business-like administration, and he
has been constantly growing in the
estimation of the substantial Ad sen
sible men of the country.” Snch an
opinion a* this coming from a wise
studious in his observations and pru
dent in whatever he says, from the
broad-minded statesman rather *h»t»
the political enthusiast, may he ac
cept as a true prophecy of the com
ing election.
Uahone is about to lose wliat little
power he still holds in Virginia. It
is a verification of the old adage that
“wrong cannot long prosper,” and Mr.
Muhone must descend iuto the depth
in which his despicable character fits
him to live.

The steamship Etruria, which
the swiftest vessel on the ocean, has
beaten her own record. On the last
trip over she made an average of
4G0 miles per day. From Liverpool to
Hew York in less than a week is the
rule now. Aud yet salt-water naviga

A good bagging, that stands all the
tests, is made by the Lane mills of
New Orleans out of “dog tail” cotton,
Fifteen thousand yards are turned
out daily. Any kind of waste cotton
can he u«cd in its manufacture. The
mills have received orders for every
yard they can make this fall and win
ter. A market for “dog tailed” cotton
is thus creatod, requiring 100,000
bales to supply this bagging, which of
course will enhance its value.
