THE HEROIC EIGHTH.
There is note more widely known re
giment in the Sooth than the 8th Geor
gia Regiment, commanded when they
first went out by the lamented General
Bartow, who fell on the bloody field of
Manassas, and a monuir enl was raised on
the spot where he fell. Company K.,
Oglethorpe rifles, hare signified their
intention to be at the reunion on the
8th of November. The 7th and 8th

that small but important word was

the nvoMof the Senate during the

i.n<i one which has pleaded against us
in -.he courts of Europe, and aroused
disttn.-t among hitherto admiring
powers, that during the last session
df tln< Senate, {lersonal abuse, black
guardism, and utter disregard of all
the dignity and sanctity of that body,
were more unstintedly indulged in
than at any time in ihe history of
the American Congress. For most of
the disorder and abuse Mr. Ingalls
is himself responsible. He not only
permitted attgry colloquies between
pot-headed and infuriate Senators
without rebuke or interference, but
Im himoslf more than once left his
chair, and set the standard of the vi-

well known truth destroys utterly the

nothing more than this: “If, the tra-

LET IT BE RAISED-
Smiic-tirne ago the question was
r.tb i-d why not increase the salary of
i he Governor of Georgia. Since the
tii -t .shot was fired agaiustthe present
mi.all-salary of three thousand dollars
a year, the artillery of nearly every
newspaper in the state has been heard
lire'll the question.
A si an* whose population and in-
• vii il interests have reached the mag-
1111 iid«* and importance of the great
'aie "f Georgia, should compensate
Je 1 . hief magistrate with a salary at
h-a'i eommensnrate with the labor, if
. ■ with the dignity of his high office.
Idle duties that now devolve upon the
Governor of the state are both num-
<•: ms ind arduous. When the present
.-alary was first fixed it was considered
ample and sufficient, but since then
the interests of the state have greatly
multiplied, and the duties of its chief
cxeeunve increased in both their
number and complexity.
t 11 less a man hac a private fortune
he rai:not afford to be Governor. Hi«
salary is not sufficient to cover the
expenses which appertain to his office.
A - tiie representative of the state he
nui't receive and entertain the promi
nent visitors of other states. Custom
h i- made it a rule to entertain a
>ta i d times the members of tbe gen-
eta! assembly and other officers of the
stat-. and the money for £his purpose
must come otit of the small salary he
leecivcs. Now, shall a virtuous, wise
• •ini upright man be denied the office
>ui aerount of his poverty? Shall the
- '.' ivd and responsible duties of the
trust of a free and sovereign
•artored to the highest bidder?
in effect, the interpretation of
•m statute, and such will inev-
e the case unless a speedy
remedy is made.
N ov, there are the states of Vir
gin.a and Kentucky, scarcely larger
limn the state of Georgia, which pay
their 'governor an annual salary of
.‘s..,u(lo. .Marylaud, whose population
is hardly half as great as ours, and
with interest* that can scarcely be
compared, pays §4,500. Tennessee,
Mississippi and Louisiana, all which
hill Mow the state of Georgia in the
prominence they hold in the Union of
tim slates, pay their governors §4,000.
Shalt the Empire State of the South,
with all her abundant resources, and
all her countless industries, with a
wealth that could pay her governor
as an empire might her prince,—shall
In-, with a miser’s hand, withheld a
just allowance, an honest compensa
tion?
1 he sentiment of the entire state is
in tut or of an increase, and if the
coming legislature is indeed, as in
itnine, the representative of our great
people, the salary of out governor will
heightened, and made commensu-
on a possum hunt. Cal. Baldwin hail
just received a possum dog from Eng
land, and he wanted his friends to see
how fast his imported dog could put
them up a tree. Col. Baldwin had been
at great expense to "et the dog out from
England, and he expected to catch pas-
sums and ’taters for market. Saturday
night tbe party, eleven in number, as
sembled and started out to Mr. George
Mutrel’s plantation where possums roam
in droves. Buggies and pheatons carried
the party out, and all were well loaded
with everything necessary for a possum
hunt. After a drive of five miles the
horses were tied and the imported dog
turned loose and away he went. Col.
Baldwin informed his friends that he
was managing the hunt and he would
show them more possums than they
could bring home. l)r. Rush carried the
axe. while Coroner Pitner went in front
with the light.
“Go for him, old boy,” shouted Col. j
Baldwin, and the party plunged into the 1
forest that surrounds Mr. Murrel's plan- j
tation. They had not proceeded a him- I
dred yards before the quick, sharp yelp 1
of the imported dog was heard.
“Struck a fresh track.” said Col. Bald-1
win, “and he will soon have him up a !
tree. I know it is a fat possum from his
bark; this dog never barks on a poor
possum's track; he is “net built that
way.”
Soon after the dog opened a rabbit
rushed in frox! of the party with the
dog in full tilt aftxr him.
“This is a mistake,” said Gol. Bal lwin,
“my dog his not got acquainted with the
American pn.-sum, and no has mistaken
the rabbit for a possum.”
The dog was stopped an-l a different
direction taken, and soon the dog treed a
sheep. This was another mistake
claimed by Mr. Baldwin, an l he ex
plained to the party that his dog di; rot
know the difference between a sheep and
a possum, but was liable to be educated.
The party hunted until 1” o'clock
without catching a possum, and they
built a fire and settled down to a night's
enjoy inert.. There was not a possum
caught but any number of rabbits run
to their hole. The party returned next
morning very much disgusted wiih im
ported dogs.
