THE 0, C. A N. R. R.
The Omila gamy Completed end the Bn-
glneerlag Ceipe Transferred to Virginia.
We learn that on* of the engineers ha*
gone from Athena to Virginia, where he
will be set at work surveying a line to
tap the G., C. & N, road at Monroe, N.
Cm and pass through Virginia. The
route has about been settled from At-
lantsto the Savannah river, and the
corps of engineers now st work betwsen
Athens and Elberton can make any
changes necesssry. We learn that Gen.
Hoke has decided to push the work at
the Carolina end of the line, instead of
grading at both ends His rta3on for
doing this is stid to he that he may con
trol the business as fast as th* iron ia
put down, in the interest of the roads
that will connect with this line on the
north. The G., C. ft N. is now a settled
fact, and it is con6dently expected that
within 18 moutha, at furthest, th* entire
line will be io operation. Athena will
be its principal city, and it ia fair to pre
dict that within fire years we wiU have
a population of 26,000. Treasurer Hull
ssys that this road has never been on a
Brmer financial footing than it is now,

Georgia better suited for auch an enter

ern companies have either been forced
from the Held or have established breach
house! in the 8outh. With anch ample
facilities within our borders wo should
uot be tributary to other places, in too
manufacture of guano.
Wo ore reliably informed that this
; rear Col. 8mith, of Oglethorpe, made
' .600 bales of cotton, which brought him
upword of *60(000. Beside* this be baa
told about *16,000 worth of cotton seed
oil and betwaen *26,000 and *30,000
worth of fertilisers. He ha* raised
aboat enough grain to'supply his im-
mens* farm and slaughtered several
hundred head of hog*. Beside* this In-
coma Col. Smith’s rents from bis lands
will be in the neighborhood of $20,000.
Ho has now applied for s charter and in-
tends building a railroad of hio own from
Pleasant Hill, th* name of his farm,, to
tap the Georgia Railroad about * mite be
low W.nterville. Wo leorn that he baa
mad* arrangements for his iron and roll
ing stock and early-next year will put
his convicts to work eroding the road.

acquainted with hit affairs say that he is
to-day worth not less than a quarter of
