H. Remaen, Esq, Lincolton, Ga.—Bear
Sir: To your farer of a recent date ask-
lag me to reriew the objections of the
internal rerenue law, regulating the
. manufacture and sale of liquors, beer,
collection beiag only 18.40 in the <100.
The tax fixed by this law falling on the
consumers of liquors and beer (which it
erentually does,) is easily and for the
most part voluntarily paid. The great
recommendation, bowerer. for the re
tention of this law Is, that the proceeds
of the tax on liquors and beer amoant-,
log to <89,000 yearly will enable con
gress to release from heavy taxation an
equal amount of imports embracing, as
im paid wt 11
we bars before stated, moat of the neces
saries and comforts ofhnman Ufa. Tears

how can they bo most easily levied? An
other reply to tho asms objection ii, that
a tax of forty per cant, on imports, em
bracing nearly everything wo «te,ia
also a “war tax,” ao that oalling the In
ternal rerenue tax s "war tax" prores
nothing. It is objsotsd, also, that this
tax is an sxcise tax, that is a tax levied
on articles of domestic production and
ahoald ba aboliahed for that reason. 1
eannot iso tbs foros of this objection, if
by a selection of certain articles of do-
mettle, production sneh as whisky,
brandy and beer • tax can be lsrisd up
on them which render* certain s redac
tion of duties on almost every article of
necessity and oomfort need by oar peo
ple. Again it is objected that Mr. Jef-
. feraan in hia day declared that an excise
tax, such as this was not Democratic.
Wa reply to this that Mr. Jefferson w.aa
never situated as President Cleveland
now is. The question was never presented
to him whether a Urge eurpius in the
Treasury should be reduced by a repeal
of internal revenue taxes on whisky,
brandy and baer or by a reduction of im
ports embracing many of the necessaries
of life. It ii objected that the internal
r«vanne tax is inquisitorial, offensiva and
tyrannical. To whioh wa reply that it is
not more so then tba revemjpjew' as to
