Never was the ministry generally more exemplify for aoundneaa of doctrine tough', and godliness of walk, in and out of the pul pit Never did the pulpit command and deservedly receive more universal and cordial approbation of both the church and the world. The church ap proves the truths (aught, and reverences the holy lives of it* pulpit teachers. ♦ And just here, strange to eay, lies a •ubtle temptation to the chnrch. To use e buainesa phrese—the tempta tion to bank oh iU pulpit piety. And tbla brings us to th* business pert of our tsxt ThiB cburch—its members—is not slothful in business. Neeer were the church pews so filled with men ex emplary in businees beblts as the world woes. But there Is the rub. Th* Sun der sittings show where the cburch end the world dirldc. Th# tBen corners sre full—church o£8 cere sre not lacking— the pews we well-filled with a good membership—sad! thst too of the most tnfiusntisl snd host people of the com- munitr. Going out from the church on Sunday two well defined currents flow forth to their homes and from their home* to duties of time tor the following wesk. Oos ths smints~tho other the sinners. On Monday—in the duties of business—thoit two currents flow grad ually together until erory Seturdsy night there ie little or no difference in their ways of doing things of time. The Flint and tho Chattahoochee ris ers unite at Apiltchte snd form th# Apa lachicola. The Ciiatuboochee is muddy snd the Flint compared rely clear. For some little distance the waters of the double current sre distinct—but grsdu Ally they mingle, snd in a short distance -down stream the two thoroughly blend and all it muddy. So with the church and the world when the two 8undsy current! mingle and become one in every day businesa of thia life. The business ways of the world were never more aelflsb, and subtle,—aatanic-,—than. in the pres ent day. .Jacob in his palm iest da} s revelling in the act of cheating old Laban out of . if bards snd flocks couldn't hdd a light to his imitators of this day and generation. Con tributions to all c‘ urch purposes are good; and given generally and freely by .memhois according t> ability. Charity to the poor seems to abound. Have we ca r r.ed our religion into ouv business or have wo by our conduct confessed thst religion snd business like.oil snd water wont mix? Have we honored or dis honored the Lord, in the business of the week from whence we bring the Sunday offering to God’s altar. The church needs business in religieu woefully, it is needed in all cburch work. But God forbid that the basi- ness waya of a wicked world shall ever pervade the church. When that day comes th* church will no longer worship tha living God in the cloud over, hut will bow down to the Goldea Calf at the foot of Sinai. [A special correspondent of the Nevr Yofk Exchange writes from Paris, France, undor date of March 3 ? the fol lowing letter to hi* paper. This commu nication cannot fail to be of great interest to all the people of Athena ,is well as to every one having at heart the welfare of our enterprising city. We beg the at tention of our readers to this communi cation, in that it ahowa the commerce of Georgia's Classic City is making itself felt in the great metropolis of fashion beyond the sea.] Paris, March 3.—It ia surprising how largely the leading mercantile houses of the United States are becoming repre sented in the French capital. A little more than a decade since, it was almost a noveltv for an American visiting here to feast his eyes upon a businoss sign with the name of a trans-Atlantic firm inscribed thereon. In the Rue Scribe or Uue Monroe might here and there be seen the plate of some American bank ing house or transportation agency. This wafralLv Everything is now changed in this respect, and there aye to-dav few prominent afreets In which agencies of Urge commercial houses across the wa ter may not be found. , Such agencies are raaintv those of firms in such centres as New York, Huston ami Chicago, and th# American quarter h fast extending its former lim its. It is asserting itself far out beyond the Rues do I’Exchiquier and Qnatre S* pteinbre, where at one time evens rhust of its form was never dreamt of. Northern and westurn houses are natu rally in the majority, although southern firms are by no means conspicuous by their abaence. Let me give you one instance of this. I was strolling along the Rue de 1’Ex- chiquier the other day when upon the door of No. 21 1 noticed an elegant brass plate bearing th* nerae Michael Bros, Athens, Georgia, U. 8. A. Could it be possible, reasoned I with myself, that Athena, which I bad hitherto taken to be an obscure country town in the Empire Slate of the South, is here represented? It su-» ly w«s represented, and nobly too. For npon entering the building I discov ered an array of millinery such as it r rely falls to the lot of one to diacover It waa a perfect surprise to me, aa I could never have imagined that an unpre tentious city in that Southland, of whoae depictedness we hear ao much, had within its bosom a firm sufficiently large to do battle with the world-wide c It- brated millinery market of Paris. Judging from my own experience, oi rather from my own past incredulity, the genuineness of the to called “impor ted” articles of millinery to be haa in the United States is often seriously called in question. But of this I can doubt no longer. Such houses aa the on* I have described, and at whose ex istence I was so vastly astonished, must take from the Parisian market an enor; tnous supply of specialties with which to gratify the tastes of their cus tomers. The French in general, the Parisians in particular, were ever the leaders of fashion In dress, and will probably remain such. 1 do not mean to Imply that our American taste is in any way inferior to that of th* Parisians. It mar be, or it may not be av. Any how the Parisians have the reputation for being better criterion! than are we, and there's no help for ft. With ell thia in view, it is not there fore to wondered at that an enterprising firm, such aa that of Michael Bros^ must unquestionably be, should see its op portunity in the palm thus proffered to Parisian taste, and profit by that oppor tunity. The prediction ia certainly one to whose originality 1 can lay no claim, but the day has come when an Ameri can lady must either stand or fall by her predeliction or otherwise for Peri- sian millinery. She is bound to have it, area though it may come a little high. This ia the edict of fashion, and who it there who dares to controvert her edicts? was doted and the birds bagged.
