THE 8ANN iH-'VATCHMAN ATHENS, G A. MARCH 13 1^,
nER-WATCHMAN
THE TRUE POSITION.
Hon. Allen D. Candler, of the Oth,
writes a strong and patriotic letter
defining bis position. He says, which
it eminently true, that the conditions
of the people of his district are pecu
liar and unlike those of the rest of
Georgia. He feels it bis duty to rep
resent his constituency although it
places him in apparent antagonism
with the majority of the Georgia del
egation in Congress. He says ho
in perfect accord, however, with the
representatives of districts similarly
conditioned in North Carolina and the
two Virginias. He adds:
“Of course my views will not be
adopted by Congress, neither will
those of the President. J3oth are ex
treme views and extreme views are
seldom enacted into laws. The out
come will be some compromise meas
ure like the bill just reported by the
committee on Ways and Means. I
will, of course, never abandon my
party. The supremacy and integrity
of the party rises paramount to every
other consideration and I will vote for
tho party measure when it gets
squarely before the house no matter
how much or how little it may con
cede of what 1 utn demanding.”
No reasonable people could demand
more of their representative, and all
men who place party success above local
interests; the welfare of the majority
above personal and selfish aims, can
but approve and applaud this mi
stand of the Plow Boy from Pigeon
Roost. It is out of the question for
every county and section to have jjjst
what they want, legislation that will
advance the country at large must be
enacted and it is the part of a true
Democrat to take just the stand that
Col. Candler does, viz: to press tho
claims of his district to tho utmost,
hut when tho line is drawn stand
squarely by the Democracy.
Much is sail! about the great tax on
the President of shaking hands so
much. Report now bus it that Mrs,
Cleveland is training two aligators,
presented her in Florida, to perform
this part of tho Executive duties. It
is doubtless wearying, but it will not
do for the head of this democratic
country to abandon this custom so ex
pressive of tho genius of our institu
tions.
It has been found that tho letter
f iurporting to bo from President Cleve-
and declining a renomination and
published in the Albany Times is a
forgery. Tho President will await
the action of the "National Democratic
Convention before In* accepts or do
clines.
The Tribune of Rome is out in a
twelvo page immigration issue for
Sunday. Hon. Jno. T. Graves is do
ing effectual work for his city and the
State at largo in attracting the atten
tion of Southern tourists to the great
advantages of the South.
It is reported that Congress will
moke an appropriation to assist in the
colored exnibit at the Augusta Expo
sition. To foster private and local
enterprises is to establish a precedent
that would deplete tho treasury vaults
of tho world.
Gen.Peter Spangler the other day
called on the railroad authorities of a
certain road in Ohio and paid, with
interest, a fare that tho conductor had
failed to take up 25 years before.
Was ho more cranlc than honest?
Age and domestic afflictions will
provent Capt. Bogardun from again
contesting for the ring shotchumpion-
■hip of the world. Ho has boon the
champion shot of America for 17
years, and of tho world since 1875.
We publish to-day an article from
Col. S. C. Dobbs on the Special Tax
question. The article is pointed and
full of forcible suggestions. We in
vite a freo expression of opinion
through our columns.
After three hours and a half of
slugging the fight between Boston's
pride, Jno. L. Sullivan, and Mitchell,
the English pugilist, was declared a
draw. The fighters, with several ring
leaders, will probably bo arrested.
The old Emperor of Germany lived
beyond the promise of life, and in his
dying days held his great-grandson,
William, on his knee—while his son
and grand-son stood beside him.
Puck puts Blaine to bed, leaving
a special order with his waiting boy
that he is ready to respond to any
summons from Chicago.
The German citizens of Savannah
adopted resolutions of respect on the
death of the Emperor and cabled ex
pressions of sympathy to the Empress
Augusta.
Fred Douglass met with a warm
welcome from the colored people of
Augusta, and his reception at the fk«s«aMie»
Wan High School was particularly
striking.
Americans are great theatre-going
people. Last year 172 actors came to
this country from abroad. The irepe
