WORD TO-HE WISE-
It is repute ■ ♦Lore is a movement
in a few places to select as delegates
to the St. Louis convention one or two
gentlemen who, while they are not op
posed to President Cleveland’s re-nom
ination, are identified in Georgia with
the party who antagonize the
sage.
In our opinion it would bo a fatal
^blunder to send any man to St. Louis
who is not known to he publicly in
accord with the President and his
views. Our delegation ought to he
composed of men who are cordial sup
porters of the President’s platform.
It is dangerous to put his opponents
in a position to dictate to him a plat
form which will force him to decline a
nomination, Let us have delegates
who are outspoken supporters of Cleve
land and his policy.
MUST GIVE ATHENS A CHANCE'
A press dispatch from New York
means a great deal more than appears
on its surface. It is to the effect that
a syndicate, including several Geor
gia capitalists, has been formed there
aud has secured the exclusive right for
the southern states of Toinkill’s pro
cess for reducing vegetable fabrics to
paper stock, with the intention of es
tablishing mills in all the cotton states,
and applying the process to reduction
to paper of cotton st alks and seed hulls,
. now practically worthless.
The promoters of the enterprise
claim they can make good news paper
at two cents per pound, and conse
quently the establishing of their mills
will be made an event in the econo
mical history of the South as great as
the establishing of the cotton seed in
dustry.
No bettor site in tho country could
ho secured for the establishment of
such mills than Athens affords, and we
respectfully urgs onr business men to
look into this matter.
'marriage, would embarrass a dozen
Ilismarcks to explain satisfactorily.
Hence it is not surprising that the
great Chancellor does not care to un
dertake the task.
Ho the old threat otfiis resignation
is renewed. The sympathy of the
world is with the brave Prince and the
fair Princess, of course; hut if the story
hooks are true, there have often been
dragons and chancellors and such
things in the path of royal lovers, and
one can but bravely hope that the
troubles of Alexander and Victoria
will vet end in the inevitable and hnp-
y old w;

A New York paper has started out
to discuss the tariff in rhyme. Here’s
what it has to say about the tax on
leather:
"Oil, U»e leather, the beautiful leather,
That warms the feet In liulx-autiful weather.
And hurts the corn while It saves the toe—
The tax on leather’s a metrical woe.”

at liberty to pick out what you like,
and leave the rest for some one less
fastidious Ho you know what they
would call a man who sat down at
first class hotel dinner, and beginning
at the first item on the hill of farcj
tried to eat every dish mentioned
thereon? The H.-W. presents a varied
bill of fare every day, hut there is
law to compel a man to devour ovory

So far as ninetieth meridian stand
ard time ss concerned, we cannot en
dorse tho poet who says: “Backward,
turn backward, (Rime in jour flight.*'
If the time in question is generally
adopted, it is going to give our friends,
the almanac makers, a pMe of trouble.
But this is not all. Wo want pro
gress—none of this retrograde lusi-
ness. Herein we must he a little con
servative also, and must say that the
time of our dowdies is quite good
enough time for us. Do you call this
paradoxical progress?
Because Secretary Bayard instructed
the commander of the United States
war-ship Enterprise not to open firs io * ,,vd -
upon the Moorish forts without ordere
from Washington, the republican
press is finding fault with both the
Scaretary and the Cleveland adminis
tration. Our friends, the enemy, ap
pear to forget that neither the admin
istration nor the Secretary of State
has any constitutional or legal author
ity to make juar upon a foreign nation
without the action of Congress.
The Empress of Brazil will not
countenance the wearing of birds’
feathers or bodies by ladies. Though
Brazil is noted for its birds of brilliant
plumage, the Empress never allows
their feathers to be «»*ed for any part
of her dress. 8he says that, much as
she admires the feathers of magnifi
cent birds, she only likes them on
their bodies. That the destruction of
beautiful birds, lor no higher object
than personal, adornment, is rank cru
elty cannot be questioned.
