Three Fine Animal* Dead and Many"Oth
er* Not Likely te Recover—The People In
The Locality Becoming Alarmed—An
Investigation Wlli;Probably be Made.
About two weeks ago two of the
horses at Congressman Carlton’s subur
ban home in Southern Athens were tak
en with an unknown diveaiiH. They
came up from the pasture limping and it
was thought that they were snake-bitten
as both had inflamed places onjheir legs
which were running ,freely. Medicine
was given them, but they soon died.
Others of Dr. Carlton’s stock were like
wise taken sick, and it soon bocamo ap
parent that a snake bite was not the
cause.
Five animals have been subseqontly
down and a fine colt has been added to
the death list. These were all fine stock
and $8(JO would not have bought the
threo that are dead.
I* • akoti vtbiU tho d<««*na an near
ed among tho stock of Messrs. G. II.
Heard and II. L. Brittain, two of Capt.
Carlton’s neighbors. Though the dis
ease afTccted Mr. Heard's horses in a
light form the animals have not {recover
ed yet, and are still in danger. Mr.
Brittain lost on Monday a $300 carriage
horse, and tho disease from which it
died may attack his other stock, as they
were freely exposed, Mr. Brittain not
knowing the nature of tho disease,
thought as had at first hia neighbors at
Carlton's, that the horse was snake
bitten.
