war; state, ami national,
and international discord, more than
enough. The disagreements, begin, of
course, with words, and end with
blows and bullets.
Jehovah has represented himself by
this strangest of all compound nouns:
viz: “I am the I-shall-bc-of-arniicH!”
That is: a warrior now, mid for the in-
deUnite future.
Tlwrc ara dreadful, earth-convulsing,
prophetiwars, coming on a pace.
The millc niuni is to l>e ushered in by
Moody wars, throughout the a|Mwoly|>-

and its ultimate eternal rest, are to be
obtained l»y the tragedy of war.
Let, however, the Peace Congress

ception, have ordered their Ambassa
dors to atMent themselves, not only
from the Exposition, hut from France,
for the present.
Such extreme and foolish resentment
can only serve to remind the oppressed
peoples, of the liberty which the French
enjoy, and cannot hut excite in then*
a longing to throw off their own yoke.
Nothing could have bceu done more
effectually to excite in them a desire to
select their ow n Kulers, and hold them
rigidly responsible for their conduct.
Jay Gould says, that Bishop Potter
is wrong in what he says about Pluto
crats ; and aflirnis, that very rich men
are a great blessing to the world, aud to
the poor, in particular. It is they who
build rail roads, canals, factories ami
mills, and keep them moving. They
thus g<vs employment to millions of the J
poor, and thus help them to help them-
Ivcs.
This is the true philosophy of help
ing another.
Give him work. Pay him honest w ages.
Indiscriminate hem-factions are

and vice. They wound self-lov
and destroy self respect.
Bishop Potter referred to the im
proper use of money, in “pradica
polities,” and in this he was right.
Jay Gould is a king in finance,
is charged w ith hulling and I
the stock market, by use of the most
unscrupulous methods. If hi, lie is to
be condemned; and all money thus
made, is not honestly made;hut to give
the devil his due, in the matter under

OSCULATION.
Osculation, or kissing, we always
thought a very simple and enjoyable
recreation, under favorable circuni
stances; neither did we imagine, that
there is anything very inysteri-
about it, until Dr. Henry Gibbous, in a
recent lecture, in San Francisco, dc-
Hincd a kiss to he: “the anatomical
juxta-position, of two orbicularis oris
muscles, in a state of contraction!”
Now.this Doctor i* an enemy of the
human race. He ought to be assassi
nated. H® ought never to have been
born.
'The doom of the race is sad enough,
at best I There arc only a very few
things left us,since the fall, which pro
duce unalloyed bliss. Among them,we
place osculation in the front ranks.
This definition, however, makes the
ait almost impossible; and it can not
hereafter be performed, except with a
divided couadousneM, aud the loss of
half of th® nectar of the lip*.
There is a great law pervading our
physical, moral, and emotional nature,
that “unconsciousness is health.” A
healthy laxly knows not itself. A
healthy moral nature passe* no resolu
tions, aud never rtqxMit*. A healthy
emotional nature, gives itself up whol
ly to the rapture, and intoxication of
present joy. Consciousness is undivi
ded. Who that has read this dreary
definition of osculation can ever again
enjoy the unalloyed bliss of k kiss
from some petted darling!*
We xre not sure, that with ao many
Technicalities in the memory, the con
traction of the mucles is possible, but
we would advise our reader* to make
the endeavor, on ill# first fascinating
charmer who excites the desire.
The Great French Exposition begun
on May 6th, and commemorated the
opening of the States General, one hun-
dnul years ago. In, 1789 the dreadful
Ba*tule was destroyed, and a document
was framed, v»iM ^“Declaration of
the Eights of nun,” in opposition to
the Bourbons, on which the Revolution
waa fought.
It Is heoomiug, that this Centennial
should toobserved, with becoming cer
emonies, reminiscences, orations, and
general rejoicings, and we extend to
our sister Republic, our hearty con
gratulation*. * ,
The exisUnee of a Republic
In Fran* however, is a constant
menace.to the Despotisms of the old
world, and France probably has not a

was very wealthy; and he was
bankrupt in character und in fortune.
ancestral castles were falling
into dacay, and he did not have a shil
ling with which to repair them. So,
she exchanged her million*, for the title
of Duchess.
On may the .‘id, at u Drawing Room
reception, tin's magiiiilcent-looking,
queenly, American Duchess was pre-
I to her majesty, and bore the try
ing ordeal, with becoming grace and
dignity.
The queen graciously bent forward,
and as is usual when peeresses are pre
sented, kissed the Duchess cordially, on
the check. It is reported, that the
Prince and Princess of Walcfe received
he^with distant and stately courtesy,
Ix-cnnse the Marchioness of Blandford—
the divorced wife of the Duke—belongs
to their set, and is very intimate with
them. •
Though the Duchess is one of the
most attractive women in the world,
and is spending her money lavishly, in
beautifying and adorning his estates,
it is said, that the Duke has been con
quered again by his old habits, and has
shown Ids ingatitude in a way which
deeply wounded a sensitive pature.
Col. Fred Grant, on his way to
Austrin stopped in London, and
was presented to the British
Court. His wife was handsomely at
tired, ami presented a very attractive
nppcurance.
He however, lias not fine legs, and in
silk stockings, aud knee breeches, and
with a shambling gait, was neither
majestic nor graceful.
