TRUSTS.
It is said, that tin* average of custom
duties is forty-seven per cent. This
favors trusts and monopolies. They
could scarcely flourish, or even exist
at all, under any other circumstances.
If there were a small dnty, just enough
to pay the expenses of the government,
and incidental protection to American
industries, there would be no further
acotttuulidion of surplus, in the Trcas-
nry, grinding monopoly would evaw*
and food ami clothing could he pur
chased, at a minimum price, above the
v- cost of production.
When there is no tariff, or a very low
tarifl', the old natural law, of supply
aud demand regulates prices. With a
low tariff, if any monopoly were started
and prices were unduly advuuced, sup
plies from other countries would come
in like a flood; the market would In*
glutted, and prices would fall.
The .Standard Oil Company is res
ponsible for the grinding oppressions,
and enhanced values, caused by other
trusts, which have followed Its wicked
example.
Trusts have now lu*en established on
every commodity wliitffi Is siilllcienlly
protected, by n high dnty, to practi
cally exclude competition) from
abroad.
The Preen has done its duty.
It has held up these im-
Dcrupuloiis monopolists ami makers
of burdens for the |ws>r, to mer
it seoru nml execration, ami Congress
has offered more resolutions than
enough, full of righteous indignation,
ami uttered emphatic denunciation.
These, however, have perished In the
hands of committees.
Men interested in trusts have com
bined to prevent the repeal of the
laws, through the operation of wliieh
alone, uny trust is possible.
A lobby, in their interests, represent
ing uneounted millions of dollars, is in
constant attendance on Congress: and.
relief, if it come at all, appears to be
very remote.
We have flue words enough, and pen
alties proposed against these criminals;
and lofty declamation, showing how
the |>oor are made poorer, and the rich
made richer, until their aeeumulated
fortunes grow to inconceivable and in
credible amounts.
Hut when poor am! grasping repre
sentatives arc taken up into a high
mountain, and are offered uncounted
gold, if they will only betray their con
stituents, nml serve themselves, what
wonder is it, that they fall down and
worship Satan.
There is m> hope for relief, until the
tariff is reformed, and such combina
tions are rendered Impossible, by the
operation of wholesome law s.
Heforuis move slowly. A beginning
however, must Ihj made. Home o
whether in public life or not, hut w
the spirit of a statesman, nml the 1<
of the ra«*e aud of justice, in his heart,
should study the car me of these opres-
sive monopolies aud suggest the reme
dies for relief.
The argument could Im> pm In
answerable form. The Press would
keep it before the public, ami represen
tatives, with relief as a distinct issue
would be chosen to give the people re
dress, by means of wise federal laws.
The most grievous part of this verj
ugly business is, that very many of these
wicked extortionists have “stolen the
livery of lieaven to serve the Devil in.
It could l»e hoped, that they are infl
dels or even Atheists; but we arc
shocked to And, that many of them arc
foremost In their zeal for Keligion.
One lu particular, a member of the
Standard Oil Company, whose income
is said to be $48,000 per day, is regard
ed as almost thrice a saint, because, for
sooth, out of his superabundance, which
he can scarcely estimate, he occasional
ly sends his check, to the Secretary of
some board, for a thousand dollars, or
even a hundred thousand dollars.
Yet, this same zelot, if a poor man
were to discover oil on his lean acres,
aud were to place It iu the market, for
sale, would put down the price of oil, |
in the community where the new brand
is offered, to ten cents, or live cents |>er
gallon, or would even give it away, un
til the newly discovered well—now ren
dered worthless—could be bought hy the
plutocratic saint, at Ids own figures.
Muttering* of distant thunder can al
ready be heard, and a storm of pittilcss
fury will soon break upon the doomed
heads of the oppressors.
The existing atate of affairs cannot
much louger be borne. The Press is
giving the people information. They
will not be silenced, neither will they
tamely submit.
In this case, the voice of the people
will be the voice of God.
