tiii: wohk orrne flames.
Two tlous.-s Honied m DuiobrUle.
Our neighboring town of Daniels-
villo was u sufferer last night from
the (hours. Two houses on the pub
lic square were burned. One of them
belonged to the Masonic lraternitv
and was occupied by Mr. Geo. T.
.Johnson as a store and post-oflice,
and the upper story by the Masonic
lodge. From Mr RJ Johnson, theassis
t ant postmaster, we learn the follow
ing particulars :
The alarm was given about twelve
o’clock Monday night. The flames
had begun on the store of Mr. John'
son ami had made such headway that
no one could enter the building, and
hence nothing was saved. The en
tire stock was burned, and also every
thing pertaining to the post-oflice,
and Masonic lodge. Air John
son thinks that the iron safe Bfaootl
the test all right, though when we
saw him he had not had time to try it.
The flames caught the dwelling of
Capt. Willis II. Bennett, which was
near. Seeing t ho danger to this house,
the crowd thnt had gathered, had im
proved the time by removing every
thing from it—even to the doors and
windows. The house could probably
have been saved il a ladder of sufficient
length had been at hand. Why is it
that not one house-holder in a bun
dled has ladders so ns to help him in
case of tire?
'1 he stock of Mr. Johnson was in
sured -our informant does not know
for how much,as the policy was in
tlie safe. ’The other property was
not insured.
The tire was most probably the
woikotnn incendiary. Mr. II. .1.
Johnson left the s’ore, with Air.
Kinneb'ew, at half past eight. There
was no fire about the promises, and
he put out the lamps carefully. Air.
Strickland, a lawyer, was about there
at ten o'clock, and there was no sign
of lire. Two uglv looking tramps
were seen in town Alouday evening,
and it is suspected that they may
have been the ones who started the
lire. We extend our sympathies to
the sufferers.

moved with a quieter manner and no
levity or undue mirth was seen as one
pissi-d up and down tlie streets. It
was evident that all felt the solemni
ty of the event which had brought the
nation to tears and sorrow. There
was nothing ot sham in all these ex
pressions either, but a genuine
sense of loss and calamity was dis
cernible whenever the people moved.
About 11 a. m. Mayor Betisse sent
out the following request:
A NATION MOUP.NS ITS FAI.T.KN CHIEF.
The sad intelligence of this nio'n-
ing which announces the death of
President Garfield fills cverv heart
with deepest grief. In common with
the people of the whole country the
city of Athens leels the great loss the
nation has sustained by this dispen-
sation’of Providence, and it is fitting
that some expression he given to these
feelings; and a proper respect and
sympathy he shown to the stricken
family of onr dead President. I liens
ry lJcusse, Mayor of Athens, therefore
request that all places ot business he
closed from 12 to 1 o’clock to-day
and some badge ol mourning be shown
on each house. The bells ol'the city
will he tolled during’lhat hour.
IIenry Bkussk, Mayor.
Athens, Sept., 20, 1881.
11 was with a »| onfaiieous and uni
versal willingness that the business
men complied with this request. Most
of the meichauls drained the fronts of
their stores in black, the flags about
tbo city were placed at half mast and
as tlie bells Legnu to toll every bouse
was closed. A deep quietness pervaded
the wholo city, and while some went
to their homes, others gathered in
squadn to discuss the sad affliction and
its probable consequences.
There can he no question oi tlie sin 1
eerily of all these manifestations of
sorrow on the part of our people. It
is a nation’s loss, bnt it is also loss
grievous to each individual. One
gentleman remarked that if the peo'
pic of the North could witness ibis
scene of mourning they would no lon
ger doubt the loyalty of the South. It
is a sad and afflictive dispensation of
Providence, but may we not hope
that in it the All-wise Ruler of the
