tanner Athens, Ga., September 27, 3881. LOCAL, INTELLIGENCE. THE MAYORALTY. Hon. 11.11. Carlton Tor Mayor. Editor Banner:—Never since our city embedded the foundation of its beautiful site, did sbo require the services of a live, practical, progress ive Mayor more than she does at tbo present day. I believo our entire community icalizes this important fact; and in placing before the pub- lio (nnauthoriiedly) the name of Hon. H. ti. Carlton for nest mayor, I feel confident that should he be pleased to again serve the people, our city will be blessed with an administration that will entail growth, prosperity and advancement in every form conducive to the public weal. lie is the man for the position, and it is to bo hoped that he will tender his services to a com munity that needs them so badly, and who will not fail to appreciate them as they deserve. Citizen. Health and llrouiy Combined. Woman’s Bights.—One who has long studied this subject now presents the result of his investigations. He is happy to say that ho lias discovered * Woman’s Best Friend.’ It is adapts ed especially to those cases where the womb is disordered, and will cure any irregularity of the 4 menses.’ Brad- field’s Female Regulator aots like a charm in ‘whites,’ or a sudden check of the ‘ monthly courses,’ from cold, trouble of mind or like causes, by restoring the discharge in every in stance. Iu chronic cases its action is prompt and decisive, and saves the constitution from countless evils and iremature decay. Prepared by , Dr. . Bradfield, Atlanta, Ga. For sale at 81.50 per bottle by all druggists. Milltown, Chambers Co., Ala., July IQ, 1877. I have used your Female Regulator extensively in my practice tor a long time, and with entire success where there was no complication of disease. If it is not a specific, it is, in my opins ion, the best known remedy for the diseases for which it is recommended. Iar4-lm. J. H. Davis. M. D. AuntIwr llanilsamt' Donation to the Lucy Coliti Chapel. Communicated. Gen. Henry R. .lackson, of Savan nah, has offered to he one of five to contribute the sum of five hundred dollars to the building of the Lucy Cobb chapel. Will our good citizens allow us to lose these generous offers that are being made us from abroad ? Will not at least four of our friends at home unite with Gen. Jackson in his effort to moot conditions made by Mr. honey, and thus aid the cause of edu cation in our state. We cannot think that the men ot Athens will allow such generous help proffered us to go by default. Our ladies have been working, hop ing and praying for ihe accomplish ment ot this purpose. Will the fath ors, brothers, and husbands of our town stand by and see their hopes crushed? We think not. Wo be lieve, we hope, we know belter things of them. lint little time is left lor action in this mutter. Will not soino of our in fluential citizens lake the mutter in band and see if the amount necessary cannot be raised by the close of the week, and let us notify our generous benefactors of the fact ? It would bo too humiliating to be compelled to acknowledge that the town could not build a chapel at a cost of S10,000 when moro than halt the sum was given to them. Oh ! do not torcc us to such an acknowledgement. Lucy Cobk G. H. U. Phillips, who is charged with murder in Cherokee county, for the recent killing ot Mat thews, a convict on the M, & N. G. Railroad. The facts in reference to this killing are fresh in the mimls of all wno have read anything about it. The testimony is conflicting as to the cause of Mathews’ death, and there is considerable doubt whether the whip pings that Phillips gave him could be construed into even hastening the death, or if they could, did Phillips intend to do him serious injury. We say these doubts have been mentioned. A legal investigation will probably reach the true solution. Mr. Speer has a fine reputation as an advocate and is especially noted as a successful criminal lawyer. Phillips’ case{could not be entrusted to better bands and he nay feel sure of a fair trial as far as his counsel can secucr it to him. In A- , one of Florida’s sea port towus, there lived in ante bellum days, a wealthy but very eccentric old gentleman, who at one occasion being quite sick, awoke his wife in the mid dle ol the uight, with a tremendous uproar. To her anxious inquiry as to the cause of his excitement, be testily replied that, 4 he had not thought much about his illness, until he had just happened to remember that, in case he should die, the town could not afford a decent coffin in which to bury him. n That man was bilious, A few doses of H. II. P. would have cured him, and caused him to forget that there were such things as coffins. tfc Smith’s Scrolula Syrup and Star Curine are purely vegetable. Why will you suffer with Cancer, White Swelling, Catarrh, Rheumatism, Kid ney and Liver Diseases, when a few bci ties of these two great remedies will cure you ? From C. D. McCurky, Newton county, Georgia—I take great pleas ure in recommending to the public Dr. Cheney’s Expectorant and Croup Preventive. My little son had been a great suffer from Spasmodic Croup, during the night. Dr. Cheney, about two years ago, prescribed for him his Croup Preventive, which has most miraculously cured him. I find it equally beneficial in all cases of Coughs. I consider it a blessing my family. Every one should keep it in their houses. Try Smith’s Scrofula Syrup for your blood. It removes all skin erup tions and will give you a licautiful and clear complexion. nov9-u Ferry. Houston County, Ga., Jan. 28,1880.
