He is one of those jovial great turn who are loved as well as looked up to and Georgia is proud ol Col. Billups. We regret to know that Mr. Har ris, a young man who recently began clerking for B'oontfield & Sanlord. has been stricken down with fever and is now quite sick at his home in rear of tho University. Mrs. Hirschfield, a Hebrew lady, died this morning at her residence in this city after a short illness. &he was a sister of Mr. G. Jacobs and had a number of other relatives, to whom our sympathy is extended. Dr. Hogan, the physician in atten dance, informs us that Mr. Ross, who was blown up by the blast at the Fac tory, is getting on quite as well as could be hoped for. His wounds are healing and will he probably recover, The greatest blessings not unfre- quvnily come in disguise. A Missis sippi planter bad ten acres of indit- li reut looking cotton washed away, The water eut into a hill and revealed an old churn with $6,000 in gold snugly stored away. Ar# you going to the circus ? Ain’t tire satisfaction ol all. Th* stock- it going to be a big thing ? You bet holders of the Association have much tc be proud of, for the encomiums on their skill and mauagemant have been many and very complimentary. The crowds present were tho most orderly and decorous I have ever seen at a fair. The reason, doubtless, was the absence of alcoholic drinks on the grounds. Nothing occurred during the week that could possibly have offended the must fastidious, aud I regret that those who pictured the fair as such a dreadful and horrible monster were not urefeut io order that they might have seen how un fair and unjust they had bees in’heir extreme utterances. There were no wheels of fortune, nor any other gam jJ of, chance, allowed on the grounds; no gambling of anv charac ter that I saw or heard of. On the whole the affair was very creditable indeed. To tell you all about the fair would make this letter too long, hence I will have to abridge. The ladies departments were* full and complete, especially the house hold department, in which were en tered over four hundred articles. Miss Belle Jackson added most to the success which attended this de partment, and most of the premiums in this department were awarded to her, and justly, too, fur her canned articles, jellies, preserves, etc., were just as nice and pretty as woman can make them. Mrs. J. W. Lea took the premium for the largest number of entries by one individual at the fair. Miss Sallie Smith, of Oglethorpe, was the largest contributor in the de partment of fancy work. Miss Sallie carried off lots of premiums, and she was certainly deserving for no one did more for the fair than she. Madison, as usual, came in for her share of the premiums, through Miss M. J. Fielding, the beautiful.' Miss May Atkinson and Miss Richter. These ladies added much to the dis play, and the fact that they carried off many of ihe premiums is a suffi cient guarautee that their articles were among the best. Many of our own dear girls came up to the relief with hundreds of articles that were as good as can be shown at any fair. The prettiest pickles I ever saw were ex hibited by Miss Mattie Woodis. The prettiest hogs ever seen at any fair • were on exhibition last week. Tho first premium of twenty-five dol lars was awarded to T. S. Williamson of Oconee ; the second premium was to H. Jennings. Mr. Marshall had the best bieed boar. All of the premiums for fine cattle were awarded to Maj. H. 8. Hughes, of Athens, W. W. Price carried off the premium tor the best acre of oats. R. T. Durham had the sample of wheat that demanded the premium. D. Price took all the big purses for trotting horses. Tom Bowlin, the celebrated trotter, wob taken off ot the track after the second heat in trotting race open to the world. This parse was won by “ Snider,” the property of Dr. James A. Price, of Farmington. Financially, the fair was a success, much to the disappointment of those who remained at home to croak and makefile burdensome. Oconee. he the biggest thing that ever went to Athens. The colored population opened up the season with a big lair on Saturn 'lay night last, which was very an noying to the citizens of this place. Messrs. Hutcheson & Johnson ha7e purchased a cotton cleaner to run in connection with their gin. It is said to improve the sample wonderfully, these gentlemen have already re- ceiwd between 325 aud 350 bales of cotton and this new addition will doubtless attract a much larger cus tom. A ROAD CASE. The Road Commistioners of Beav- erdatn district, Oglethorpe county, have worked up defaulters and are making things lively for those who uphold them. About a week since Mr. J. S. Fleetuan re; ortid six of his bands, and on being brought before the Commissioners, they were all fined. They refused to pay the fine, however, whereupon the commission ers issued warrants for their arrest, and ordered them to be imprisoned. Mr. B. B. Williams, who defended the bands, then employed Mr. Whit son Y. Johnson to take charge ot the case, and both gentlemen wrote to the Commissioners threatening to prosecute them if they attempted to enforce their sentence; and also warned the Sheriff that it he attempted to arrest the defaulters he would be served in like manner, thus deterring him from executing the sentence of the court. Tho commissioners there upon issued warrants for the arrest of Messrs. Williams and Johnson, and had both gentlemen brought before them and fined each of them $50.00 for coutempt. Messrs. W. and J. claimed that the commissioners had no right to impose a fine upon them, and requested the commissioners to delay proceedings until they could briug the case belore the Superior Court which convenes this week. The request was granted and both patties await impatiently tho decision of Judge Pottle ou the question. The commissioners are represented by J. Warnock Echols, Esq., and Messrs Williams and Johnson by Mr. Samu el Lumpkin. It is impossible to tell what the decision of the court will be iu this case, but of one thing we are assured and that is that public opt ion will uphold the commissioners in the discharge of what they conceive to bo their duty. If it is made a duly lor them to try defaulters, surely they have a right to punish them, and if they erred in their deciss ion the agrieved patty bad a right tp appeal to higher courts ; but if the commissioners after passing sentence, are to be deprived either by force or intimidation of the right to enforce that sentence, then, in ourhnmble opinion, the commissionera office is a farce and the sooner it is done away with the better.
