EOCAE 1NTELEIGKNCE.
Something to Bras About.
If there have been those who were
disposed to discount Athens as a cot
ton market they have done her an in
justice. 4 It has been demonstrated
time]aud again that there is no other
market that pays better prices for
cotton and very few that can equal it.
In every test which gives a compari
son of Athens to any other market
she has come out triumphant. Only
last week wo gave an instance of a
man bringing cotton which was gin
ned and packed right in Madison, to
this city and saving $17 by the trip.
Now we have another illustration
which we think clinches the argument
as it proves Athens a better market
by far than Augusta. A few days ago
Mr. II. N. Taylor, ot this city, went to
the latter city in the interest of the
Princeton factory, to buy cotton at
the prices quoted there. He remains
ed a few days, bought 200 bales and
shipped them to Athens. When they
arrived, it was found that thrce.quar-
ters of a cent per pound had been
saved over and above all expenses by
buying it m Augusta. This cotton is
to be used in the factory here.
Such facts as this, (and it is a fact be
yond all dispute);demon8trate the su
periority of our cotton market, and we
desire the farmers cf all this section to
know that when they bring their cot
ton to Athens thev will get as good
prices as they could hope for in any
market in the State.
A buyer from Augusta came here a
few days since, but tho market was
so much above what he had been pay
ing that he became disgusted and
left.

and other affections of the Kidneys

lect of the symptoms, which, if taken
in time, would no doubt in a majority
of cases yield to treatment. No med

The Lucy Cobb Cnapcl Fund.
Mr. R. L. Moss showed ns yester
day the list of subscribers to the chap,
el lund of tho Lucy Cobb Institute,
and we were glad to see that only a
little over $500 is needed to complete
tho $4,000, which Athens is to raise.
The exact sum subscribed is $3,444.
18. In this there is but one subscrip
tion of $500 and that is Gen. Jack-
son’s. There are a number ot $100
each, some of them citizens ot Athens
who could bny Gen. Jackson twice
over, in point ot their relative wealth.
Wo are surprised that more liberality
lias not been manifested in Athens
about this matter. There has been
every reason for the pride and gener
osity of our citizens to be stirred to
their depths. Athens ought to have
one $500 subscription in this fund.
There is just room for it. Will not
some one come up and respond in
this amount? We know a man who can
do it and never feel it. In feet he has
no other use for his immense wealth
but to give it in this way.
We are glad that the $4,000 will
be raised even if it has been a struggle
t« do it. Athens has 4ittle to boast
of in this matter, but the $10,000 ot
Mr. Seney has been secured and the
$500 of Gen. Jackson, so that the
ohapcl will be built. There would
be some credit to our people, if in
stead of raising the $560 necessary to
to complete the $4,000, they would
ruiso $1,560 and make the sum $5,«
000 at once.
After the Criminals.
On Saturday last '.some gentlemen
o.i Oconee county, one or two of them
law officers and one or two from this
county, got information that they
could find at certain house, two noto
rious negroes who are much wanted
They went in a body and surrounded
the place, but by some misunder
standing a part of the crowd failed to
get close enough and stayed off in the
bushes. One ot tbo negroes got ont
of an up stairs window and came
down a tree. He was seen and
chased by ono or two until he was
caught. The other negro however,
got out in some way without being
seen and slipped off, no efte knew bow
or which way he went. He was es
pecially wanted, being the notorious
Abe Cluts, alias Jackson, whom tho
Banner mentioned recently as chargod
with several crimes. The negro
caught is Bob Reed. He is in custo
dy here.

* Woman’s Best Friend.’ It is adapt
ed especially to those cases where the
womb is disordered, and will cure any
irregularity of tho ‘ menses.’ Brad-
field’s Female Regulator acts like a

trouble of mind or like causes, hy
restoring the discharge in every in

prompt and decisive, and saves the
constitution from countless evils and
premature decay. Prepared by Dr.

I have used your Female Regulator
extensively in my practice for a long
time, and with entire suceess where
there was no complication of disease.
If it is not a specific, it is, in my opin
ion, tho best known remedy for the
diseases for which it is recommended.
Jar4-lm. J. II. Davis, M. D.
In A , one of Florida’s sea
port towns, there lived in ante beilum
days, a wealthy but very eccentric old
gentleman, who at one occasion being
quite sick, awoke his wife in the mid
dle ot the night, with a tremendous
uproar. To her anxious inquiry as to
the cause of hiB excitement, be testily
replied that, ‘be had not thought
much about his illness, until he had
just happened to remember that, tn
case he should die, the toten could not
afford a decent coffin in which to
bury him.” That man was bilious.
A few doses of H. II. P. would have
cured him, and caused him to forget
that there were such things as coffins.

From C. D. McCcrry, Newton

Dr. Cheney’s Expectorant and Croup
Preventive. My little son had been
a great suffer from Spasmodic Croup,
during the night. Dr. Cheney, about
two years ago, prescribed for him his
Croup Preventive, which has most
miraculously cured him. I find it
equally beneficial in all cases of
Coughs. I consider it a blessing in
ray family. Every one should keep
it in their houses.
Try Smith’s Scrofula Syrup for
