Henry Bensso, Mayor of Athens, and his worthy wife received a large nnmber ot in' vitod guests at their residence, who joined them in celebrating an impor tant epoch in their lives, the twenty- fifth anniversary of their marriage. The years have glided by, freighted with the joys aad cares that come to all, but after a quarter of century this couple are able to say that there has been more of joy than sorrow, more of pleasure than grief, and hap py in each otlier’a love.and the confi dence of their friends and neighbors, their hearts were light and their hopes strong as they received the earnest congratulations of their numerous guests. The evening was delightfully spent, the younger people engaging in a merry dance while the older ones con versed to gether, and recounted the scenes of the years agene, the happy events predominating. Each guest carried with him a present of silver, while several others were sent by those who were prevented from going. These presents were proluse and many of them very valuable, consisting of uselul and ornamental articles of various kinds. About ten o’clock a bountiful banquet of delicacies was spread and every one present pledged the Mayor and his wife in a flowing bumper, wishing them many returns of the " season.-' w Mayor -Beusse has nine living chil dren, the fruit of his twenty-five years of married life, and with these around him, and with health and prosperity as a crown to his marital joys he ought to be a happy man, as we doubt not he is. The Banner joins in the congratulations of the lostive occa sion and wishes him and his frauleiu continued peace and happiness. Dear Banner:— I have just re turned trom a flying visit to Madison and Banks counties. Leaving, the Northeastern nulroad at the thriving village of Harmony Grove near Dr. Hardman’s and going east six miles, yon pass ont of Jackson into Banks, and crossing Black’s creek, yon are in Madison county. Some of ihe finest bottom lands lie along this creek, intrinsically worth from 850 to 8100 per acre. The finest corn I have seen for years is now standing on . these fine creek bottoms and yet in the midst of all this, corn recently sold at a sale at SI. 15 and 81.25 per bushel and wheat at 81.80; aud why f Simply because three-fourths ot tfie land is planted in cotton. On the Banks county side of this creek upon a farm that has only pro duced abont six bales of cotton per year, for years, and which used to produce thousands of bushels ot corn, only enough land has been planted in corn to make 150 bushels, while 25 bales of cotton will he gathered this year, and the producer of these 25 bale9 says he “will fall a little behind with his guano bills.” Mr. Jesse White will soon start steam saw mill about three miles east of Harmony Grove. In close prox imity are five gins and two com mills, all the gins are busy. Lower down in Madison county, the Gelds are white with cotton, many ot them looking as though they had not been picked over the first time. Among business men the impression prevails, that cotton would advance at once, if the money coffins’ ot the % t north was unlocked—thnt it will ad. IbSpjtlrillg 1 GEORGIA, Claxxe corjrrr. THE CITY OF CANDLER. At the last term of our superior court a verdict was obtained to sell in ‘lota,’ the 'Long lands,* abont seven miles above Jefferson; but it was not then known that they would soon he ‘town lots,’ and yet it is true, and the city of ‘Candler’ looms up in the near future, as the first town on the Gainesville and Jefferson narrow gunge road. Before this 1 ail road en terprise was talked up, tnese lands would not have brought 83 pei acrCl and yet they sold on last Tuesday for three times the amount. GOOD PRICES FOR LAND. A large amount of land was sold aggregating nearly 825,000,or nearl y 810 per acre, much ot it unimproved and it is thought it would bring 20 per cent on tho investment to-dav. A large tract of land was recently bought by a citizen of this county, lying along the Athens road. A rail road to Athens would pass through or near it, and we venture the predic tion that it would, upon the comple tion ot such a road, pay 300 per cent, upon investment. Old pine fields, that a few years ago were supposed to be worn out, are now producing from one-haif to one bale per acre.
