A Hapi Roof.
Very few know perhaps, that one
of the largest and moat elaborate
wooden roofs in the state u [.being
erected, in this city, on the new ware
house of Reaves, Nicholson A Co. Mr.
McGinlv has the contract and the
work is being done by his hands, at
whoso head is Mr. Holmes, an expe
rienced and capable mechanic. Mr.
Holmes says he has worked all over
the state and the south and be knows
of none more elaborate excepting the
roof of the car shed in Atlanta and
that is iron. This is to be a suspen
sion roof and some idea of its weight
and dimensions can be gathered from
the following figures: There are to
beonly four columns neartho center of
the warehouse, for the support of the
structure that rises above the roof.
The walls of the building are none of
them of the same length. One is 171
feet, another 162, a third 152 and the
fourth 112. There are 225,000 feet
of lumber in the roof timbers, besides
7,500 pounds of bolts and bars and
100 keg* of nails. The roof will have
an opening in the center about 30
feet square and above this will be an
upward extension 30 feet high,
Around this opening will be a transom
or sky light six feet high.
The whole warehouse will be
floored with two inch flooring and will
not only be suited for the storage oi
cotton but of all other kinds of goods.
It will be one of the best in the state
when finished.
Sn Elegant Wedding.
On Wednesday evening at Gills-
ville, a wedding in railroad circles
took place, which was one of the most
elegant of the season. The contract
ing parties were Mr W. W. Fore
acre, assistant road master on the
Northeastern railroad and son of
President G. J. Foreacre, and Miss
Eulo, daughter of Mr. J. N. Garrison,
agent of the road at Gillsville. The
ceremony was performed by Rev. H,
R. Bernard, superintendent of the
Northeastern.
A special car with a largo party
consisting of Col. Foreacre and Sum-
ly aud a number ot special friends
came up to Lula on Wednesday af
ternoon, when it was taken by an en
gine sent up from Athens for the pur
pose, and bronght to Gillsville, where
i.be marriage look place soon after its
arrival.
After the ceremony a delightful
supper was partaken of by the assem
bled guests and mirth and happiness
ruled the hour. Mr. Foreacie, the
groom, is a young gentleman of sterl
ing qualities,^ind occupies a responsi
ble position with credit to himself.
Tho bride is quite young but is a lady
of rare talents and possesses all those
accbmplishments which fit her to ful
fill tho new duties she has assumed as
helpmeet to her husband. Both the
young people are very popular and
received the hearly congratulations of
their assembled friends. A further
mark of appreciation was shown in
the large number of splendid wed
ding presents which ^be bride receiv
ed, some of them being described as
exceedingly rich and beautiful. There
were a number of notable guests
present, among others Miss Kate
Nichols, daughter of ex-Governor
Nichols, of Louisiana, and niece of
Col. Foreacre; She is a lady of great
beauty and attractiveness.

Squalid Poverty.
That ‘onc-half the world dees not
know how the other half lives’ is true
in more than one sense, but it is cs- 8 p e cial car and were taken to Lula
pecially true in regard to the means
of subsistence and mode of home life
among many of the colored popula
tion of all sections of the south. Our
attention was|direcled yesterday by
officer Moon, of the police force, to a
case of utter destitution such as it is
hard to believe a human being could
endure. In the basement of a two
story dwelling on Clayton street,next
to Maddrey & Dale’s tinshop, in the
very heart of the city, wej saw two
small black children, one about six
years old and the other between one
and two, who were barely covered
with rags and these exceedingly filthy,
left all alone by their tnolhei who was
ont, we presume at work. There was
no fire in the room, not a vestige of
furniture and for a bed there was only
a small bag of straw with little or no
covering.
We asked the oldest child some
questions and he said that his mother,
tho baby and himself all slept on the
apology for a bed, that he sometimes
had enough to eat but could not tell
anything beyond this. The woman
works ont in the day and leaves the
children by themselves. We suppose
there is no remedy for such a condi
tion of things and we only call atten
tion to it to show what can exist in a
country of boasted civilization and
plenty.

As we feared, our suggestion in re»
ference to Athens’ day at the Exposi
tion was unheeded. No mceiing[has
been held and no arrangement made
to have the city represented properly
to-day at Atlanta. There is scarcely
another city in the state that has not
some sort of display at the Exposition,
and all of them are taking a peculiar
interest in makiDg a good showing on
the days set apart for them. Athens
ought at least, to have had a delegation
on hand who could not only tell the
advantages she has to offer for the in
vestment of capital, but who could also
induce capitalist, manufacturers and
others from the North to oorao and
see ns and know for themselves that
there is a fine opening here for a proper
and profitable expenditure of their
money. As it is the day will go by
default and excepting the few visitors
who have gone from[here merely to
see the sights there will be nobody
whose special duty and mission it will
he to bring onr city prominently for
ward in the attention of those who
can be of real benefit to us by coming
here. Athens mast wake up if she
would keep pace with her progressive
sister ciliea in the state.
