t HE Northern Mail had r.ot ar- when this paper was put to prefs. We trail this will plead our cxcufe for the little intelligence it contains. To what caufe to attri bute the frequent failure of the Mail at this place, we know not. It was an inconvenience which could be, and was, borne with and forgiven on a fight excufe, fome fix or feven months fince—but, is now an evil , ‘/ r ich we cannot forbear to depre cate —-It is a grievance, which mill er ‘s againft the whole community •—lt is rn evil, which vitally affrlts the hr ft interefts of this country.— It A not long ffnee one of the Mml Hones died on the route between Atigufta and this place—A limilar misfortune may have now happened, Whether this calamity was occafion ;i by bard riding , or was brought on through the inability of the ani mal to fupport the weight under which he labored, we kn-aw not— But this we de know—that at a time like the prefen?, when each indivi dual in the community is on tip toe to hear the puffing evtnu— whefi expe&arion ?.nd hope, com mingled with iome ffna’l degree of fear tor the defiiny of our beloved country, ar.d our brave and patriot ic brethren in arms, are wrtwght up to the h’gh< ft pitch of anxiety— ive fay, when this is the cafe, we do know, that that it is the boon den duty of thofe who have the man agement of our Mail Routes, to make thofe who contra# for the conveyance of the Mall, furnifh Hefts that are able, and Drivers , or A.dcrs that are capable, of convey ing the Mails to every iodion o’ our Continent with the leaft de ky, and with the molt lcrupulous exaftne-fs. We hope we fhall not again have ocesfion to notice this fi-bpCl—un lefs it be to inform our readers that the evil has been remedied— {hat the proper authority has “ corrected the procedure.** Wc w:fh not to wound the feelings of any cf the contra#- ors, but it is a duty which we owe to our patrons, to the public, and to ourfelvep, to fife this buff ids— and as far a** we Art capable, it lb*ii be done.
