The Houfe of RepreGntatives
hive difpofed of the futjeft of their
two or three laft days debate, much

Republicans of the Houfe, anxious
to proceed to the confederation of
the Tax Bills* which 1c appears are
now ready for difcufiUn, have bren
content magnanimously to wave the
gratification of their individual feel
ings, which would have prompted
them to perfevere in a difeuffion
that might have yielded them fo
great triumph. This triumph is a
facrifice to the public gjed. Mr.
Wcblter’s reflations have palled *
all the federal, and about fisty out
of ninety of the republican members
having voted for them. Thofe
who voted againft them, did fo on

AFFAIR AT PLATTSBURGH.
Xxtrsft to the Editor of the Aurora,
dated Pittsburgh, June 11, ISI3.
“ Thofe priioners who were
wounded and taken by the Britifij
row gun boats, with the United
States* (loops Growler and Eagle,
have btea paroled, and have re
turned. They (bate that but one
American was killed and feven
wounded, that the (loops went down
in fight of Ifie-au-Noix, where the
waters of the lake are coatra&ed to
a narrow river, and defeend to the
north three miles an hour, that they
did not difeover the gin boats un
til they had gotten below Afh Id •
and into the narrow river, where
they found three gun boats, which
immediately fired upon the (hops
and the (loops returned fevcral
broadfides, until it was difeovered
that a part of the point blank (hot
would not reach the gun boats, but
that a (hot from the gun boats would
pafs by aad over the (hops; the
Jloepi therefore upon making this
discovery attempted to beat againft
the surra* t and a fouth wind, which
was not quite fo heavy as they could
wifis, back into the broad lake.—
But after making fevcral ftretches
they found that was impoflible. In
the mean time, two other gun boats
came rowing againft wind and cur
reat from the ifiaad and took their
Ration with the other three* but
before they took their Ration they
landed a body of infantry on each
fide of the river, three of whom
were wounded in the coutfe of the
h&iba, but not s. man was hart on
board the gun b3ats, nor d.d one
ball from the (hops reach the.ll uc
ie fa when the guns were elevated
20 or 30 degrees, when the bails
would o/er-reach the boats with
out hitting them. The ad .on con
tinued four hours which was awlrg
to the great diftancc at whicn the
gun boar.* lay for fear of being in
jured by the fl >ops, when the Eagle
was funk and the Growler taken.—
When the gun boats fired they lay
with their bows diredlly towards the
(loops, and they were lo low and fo
(harp that fume of the fl*3ps* crew
faid they would rather fire at a
mufquetoe’s bill with the expedU
t'oa of hitting it with a cannon ball,
than at one of the B. ltifh gun boats.
They are much in the lhape of a
batteaux and have low bulwarks to
refill midket fh ; the oars are each
tied to a peg, fo that the men can
let go of them, rake up their gun.
fi e and take the oar again without
its getting out ef place. vTiA
boats arc rowed by 16 men on each
fide, and carry, fome fay, 24 pound
carronader in their bow, and & long
Cs.ir in their ftern. Our men learnt
tha* tne boats would have taken a
pefilian to windward out of the
reach of the Hoops'* guns, and cut
away their fails and rigging if the
(hops could beat to windward,
and had attempted to get away
but the Brkirfi knew chat-nothing
but a heavy north wind could car
ry them out into the bread lake
fader than thy could row the boats
and keep near enough to cut away
the rigging, fo that the fl ops could
not have gotten away even if they
had a light north wind. Upon re
flection I am fatisfied that a Song it
pounder is better for a raw gun
boat than z long 32, becaufs the 18
will carry farther than the 31, aad
a long 18 would batter a (hip of the
line. The commanding officer at
Burlington, Vermont, l am told,
has ordered a eontradl to be made,
and a con trad: has been made, to
build two row gun boats, in fourteen
days, to fupply the place of che-Ea
gle and Growler. We have juft
heard that commodore Decatur has
been chafed into New London by
two 74 s tvv<> frigates. Oh !
that we had twenty or even ten row
gua boats now lying in Conntdicut
river, I warrant you New L&nddn
wouia dot be burnt, aad that the
boa s would give a good account of
the 74’* and frigates of the eaeasy
in the Sound.
