1 um Said to be the lightest-running, the most beautiful, cheapest, b^t, and largest Sewing Machine iu the world. Ladies and the public are invited to call and see, at the Office, next door to Wm. McDowell’s, College Avenuft. J. BANCROFT, Agent. SOUTHERN BANKER FEBRUARY 26, 1878. RISK EDITH'S ROSIEST REQUEST. My papa ’snows you, and he says you’re a man who mnkes reading for books; But 1 never read nothing yon wrote, nor did papa—1 know by hie looks. So 1 guess you’re like me when 1 talk, and 1 talk, and 1 talk all the day, And they only say, “ Do atop that child!” or, “ Nurse! take Mis.-, Klith away.” lint papa said if I was good 1 could ask you— alone by myself— If von wonldn’ write me a book like that little one up on the slislf. 1 don't mean the pictures,of course, for to make them you’ve got to be smart; But the reading that runs all around them, you know—jsut the easiest part. You needn’t mind what it’s about, for no one will aeo it but me. And Jane—that’s my nurse—and John—lie’s the coachman—just only us three. You’re to write of a bad fittla girl, that was wicked and bold and all that; And than you're to write, if you please, some thing good—very good—of a cat! 'Ihia she cat wua virtuous aud meek, and kind to her parents, and mild, And careful and neat in her wavs, though her unstress was such a bid child: And hours she would sit and would gaze when her mistress—that’s me—was so bad, 1 And blink, just as if she would say, “ Oh Edith, you make my heart sad.” And yet, you would scarcely believe it, that beautiful, angelic eat Was blamed by the servants for stealing what ever, they'said, she’d get at. 1 And when John drank my milk—don’t you tell me! 1 know just the way it was doue— I They said ’twas the cat—and she sitting nr.d 'washing her face in the sun ! ! And then there was Dick, my canary. When left its cage oi>cn one day. \ They ull mad-' believe that she ate it, though "know that the bird dew away. I And why t Ju-t because she was playing wi! a feather she found on the floor, I As if cat’s couldn’t play with a feather withoi people thinking ’twas more. | Whv, once \vc were romping together, when "knocked down a vase from the sheif. That cat was ns grieve! and distressed as if she lmd done it herself; And she walked away sadly and hid herself, and never came out until tea— So they say, lor they sent me to bed, and alie never came even to me. No matter whatever happened, it was laid at the do w of that oat. Why, once, wlieu I tore my apron—she wr wrappe ! i • it. and I called “ lt.it .” Why, they hlimmed that on her il shall never no. not to my dying day— Korget tlie pained look that she gave mo when they slapped me and took me away. Of course, yon know just what eo i es next when a child is as lovely us that. She wui-ted quite slowly away—it was goodness was killing that cat. I know it wus nothing she ate, for her taste was exceedingly t iec: But they said s'lic stole Bobby’s ice cream, and caught a bad cold from the ice. And you'll promise to make t> c a book like that little one up on the shelf. And you’ll call her *■ Naomi,” because it’s name that she just gave herself; 1’or she’d scratch iit my door iu the morning. and whenever I’d call out “ Who’s there I’ she would answer “ Naomi! Naomi!" like. Christian, 1 vow and declare. And vou’ll pu*. me and her in a book. And, mind, you’re to say I was bad— And I might have Iwen badder than that but i iff i iiiffpriiiia: “ - , And vou’ll say mat she was a Maltcsse, and What's tha't yon asked ! “ Is she dead T" Why, please sir, there ain’t any cat! You’re to make one up out of your head! [Bret llurte in the Independent.] D r Tutt’s > Expectorant. Ahead of All OMPETITIOH [Cincinnati Enquirer.] M’ss Emma Davenport, the young lady mail robber, appeared before Judge Hughes to-day, in the United States Circuit Court, held in this city. Miss Davenport was charged with abstracting a valuable silk dress and two valuable packages of jewelry from the mail while she was acting as deputy postmaster at Goochland, last Christmas. She is of good family and very pretty, and there was naturally much sympathy manifested by the assembled crowd in the court-room. It seems that her lover was in the court-room and armed with a pistol, with which to blow out his Lunins should the sentence he Albany. But when the court said : “What say you, guilty or not guilty ?” the fair prisoner replied, with a tremulous voice, “Guilty!’’ then there was a scene. With the word guilty, Aliss Daven port shrieked, threw up her hands and fell hack into the arms of her stalwart betrothed. The jury were moved to tears, and the judge hid his face in his handkerchief. It was half an hour bc!oro the lady revived. The court imposed a fine of $100, then M@riweth.er <& Few, BLACK SMITH’S TWO SHOPS FOR 1877. One at the old stand in front ot Messrs.
