Storage of Com Fodder
A moderate estimate of this yield of
com fodder, would be one ton for
every ten bushels of corn. The corn
crop will this year doubtless reach at
least one thousand millions of bushels*
This would give 100,000,000 tons of
fodder, worth for iceding purposes, if
well cured and saved, at least $5 per
ton. In the aggregate this is $500,-
000,000. This large sum could easily
he made for the country out of the
crop of corn fodder, by wisely saving,
and economically using it. But no
produce of the form is so injured in
the harvesting, and storing, or so
tastefully used as this. At the pres
ent time we might consider how corn
fodder can he properly saved. First
the corn should be husked as soon as
possible, and the fodder firmly tied up
in easily handled bundles or sheaves,
which should be carefully set up in
stooks, and these should be well tied
at the top and well spread at the bot
tom, so as to keep the inner part dry
and well aired. In this stnte it
will cure thoroughly in two weeks af
ter husking, and will be then ready
for stacking, or putting away in the
mow. l>v using the ventilators, shown
in the American Agriculturist for
September, there will he no danger of
mildew, and the fodder will come out
of the mow in the winter, bright
and green, nutritious and digestible
The good qualities and value for feed
ing will have been much enhanced by
early cutting, as already advised.
Keep Your Ashes for Manure.
Wood ashes make one of the most
valuable fertilizers within reach of the
farmer. The unleached article has
the more potash, but the leached is
thought to he quite as valuable. In
leaching they shrink a good deal, and
lime usually added, which increases
their value. They are generally sold
too, at a less price. Ashes are well
suited to all farm crops, and are very
beneficial in the orchard. Most of
farmers sell wood in the cities and villa
ges, and rather than go home.empty
they should carry hack ashes and other
fertilizers to re (dace the potash, lime
and phosphoric acid that have been
carried oil" in the crops and animals
sold. Ashes show immediate etlects
from their application, and at the same
time last long in the soil. They are
very highly appreciated in ihe onion
growing regions, hut may bo applied
with equal advantage to ordinary farm
crops They should be kept as near
the surface as possible, spread and har
rowed into the seed bed, or applied di
rectly to the growing crops. Make a
business of saving, buying and storing
ashes during the winter, for the next
season’s operations.

ces of Alsace and Lortine, by improv
ing their condition, were, in accordance
with the policy that brought them their
great victory, the establishment at
Stmsburgh, of a University, and at
Rufacb, of an Agricultural Experiment
Station. That pt large*p*ft‘of the
pecuniary support of these Institutions
comes from farmers, is proof of their
appreciation by practical men. The
estimate in which they are held in the
scientiffic world is indicated by the
fact that all the larger German univer
sities, and several of those of other
European countries, have laboratories
and other appliances devoted to agri
cultural research.

A Fish Tale.—Apropos of the
camp-meeting at Martha’s Vineyard
the Methodist newspaper tells a story
of some of the brethren who arrived
early and sought to while away the
time l»y going a fishing. Several
kinds of fish were caught on the trip,
and on their return one of the fisher
men with a laudable desire for infor
mation, inquired of the skipper the
names of the different specimens.
“This,” said he, “is a black fish,
that is a blue fish, the next is a scup,
and that fellow is a Baptist.’’ “ A
Baptist!’’ exclaimed the good brother;
why do you call these fish Baptists?”
Because they spoil so soon on being
taken out of water,” was the satisfac
tory explanation.

Bones may he softened by means of

the condition of superphosphate of lime

the hone is decomposed, and the hone
itself is softened ami crumbled, so that
it may be brought to a fine powder;
this is all. The method is as follows:
Procure a large box or hogshead, or
dig a pit in ground ; put a layer of
wood ashes (unleached) six inches
thick on the bottom, then place a lay
