How t<» Drive Kata Away
Without Poison.
We know of three methods : First,
the old French plan. This is followed
clrefly in Paris, by men who make
it a special business. They take a
deep tub, with water on the bottom
time since tire marriage ceremony
was performed.
“ Dominie,” said the German, “ you
remembers you married me, and I
giv you otte leedle pig
“ Yes.’’
“ Well, if you'll unmarry me I vill
...... , • ... i.H- ' giv you two leedle pigs, pi shimmy.’
and a little elevation m tne middle , ® * m « ° r J
like a:i island, on which is only a
place for just one rat to sit on. The
trap is covered and has a large
balance valve, opening downward.
On the middle of this valve a piece
of fried pork or cheese is placed, and
when the rat walks on to it to got
Ihc.checse the valve goes down, drops
the rat into the water, and moves
back into position. A road is made
from the rat-hole to the top of the
Uib by means of pieces of hoard
rubbed with cheese, so as to make
the walk attractive for the rats In
the course of a night, some ten,
twenty, or even more rats, may go
down, and if the island was not there
they would be found most all alive lit
the morning, quietly swimming
around; but the provision of the little
island saves the trouble of killing
them, because their egotislio instinct
for preset vatioii causes them to fight
for the exclusive possession of the
island, on which, in the morning, the
strongest rat is found in solitary
possession, all the others being killed
and drowned around him. Second,
the Now York plan, invented by one
of the Friends. The floor near the
rat hole is covered with a thin layer
of a most caustio potassa. When
the rats walk on this it makes the',
feet sore; these they lick with their
tongues, which m^kes their months
sore, and the result is that they shun
tlie locality, net alone,'but appear to
tell all the rats in the neighborhood
about it, and eventually the house is
entirely abandoned by them, not
withstanding the houses around are
full of rats. Third, the Dutch method.
This is said to be used successfully in
Holland. We have, however, never
tried it. A number of rats are left
to themselves in a very large t-ap or
cage, with no food whatever. Their
craving hunger will cause them to
fight, and the weakest will be eaten
by the strongest. After a short time
the fight is renewed, and the next
weakest is the victim, and so it goes
on till one strong rat is left. When
this one has eaten the last remains of
the others, it is itself let loose. The ani
mal has now acquired such a t:\-te
for rat-flesh that he is the terror of
rat-dom, going about seeking what
rat he may devour. In an incredibly
short time the premises are abandons
ed by all other rats, which will not
come back before the canuibal rat has
left or died.—Manufacturer and
Builder.
A disconsolate Virginian writes
that money is scarce and taxes de
vour everything the poor farmer
makes. “ Why, a man cannot take a
drink,’’ he says, “ without having it
dashed 'with two and a half cents on
the State debt and undergoing jit tlie
fame time a solo serenade from a
Mott punching bell.”

The Matrimonial Lottery.
A young stranger called on Dr.
M’C one evening, while he was
pastov in New York city, to engage
his services in the performance of a
nuptial ceremony.
“I wish to make a bargain with
you, doctor,” said the young man.
“ I think the girl I am to marry will
make a first-rate wife. If you will
wait a year for your fee, and she
turns out as I think she will I will
then give you fifty dollars.”
They agreed, the young couple
were married, aud the incident passed
from the doctor’s mind. At the end
of a year, at the same time in the
evening, the young man called again.
Tlie doctor did not recognize him at
first. r

“Doyou not remember the bargain

“ Oh, ves,” replied the doctor.

There is one hundred dollars for you.’’
Exactly the opposite of this is the
following: , ,
A clergyman.in one of the Hudson
