SOUTHERN BANNER. APRIL 2, 1878. Forty Days. THE I.ENTON FAST—END OK FESTIVE SEASON. 1. On Wednesday, the 6th, or as it is termed, Ash Wednesday, was the beginning of the Lenten season, and the religious throughout the world will observe the season, and cast from their hearts all worldly thoughts, and adore with deeper devotions the Re- deemer of all. The origin of the above word is uncertain. Some derive it from the Saxon lenten, implying spring, or the season when the days “ lengthen j” others from Gerinau lenten. There is some diversity of opinion as to the time and manner of its observance. Lent is proceeded in some countries by the dissipation of the carnival. The first day of Lent is called Ash Wednesday from a custom whioh still prevails in the Roman Catholic church of sprinkling the head or forehead with ashes. Scant repasts and religious reading are the order of the day. Music, art, theatre, the concert room, all these should be laid aside, and prayers, penances and books of devo tion be substituted. At least many Christians will “keep lent” in this manner. Lent is observed more gen erally by Episcopalians and Catholics, especially the latter, though other denominations have their days of abstinence as well. The observance of Lent is a custom dating back to the establishment of the Christian church. Ba*cd first upon the traditions handed down from the apostles, it was formally instituted as an essential church cere monial so early as A. D. 189 by Tel- esphorus, the seventh successor of St. Peter, in the apostolic chair. The ceremony of wearing sackcloth and ashes is one of the most ancient methods of expressing deep sorrow or abasement, and among the Jews was one of the forms of public pen ance. The penitent standing at the temple door, clothed in sackcloth and ashes, while the “faithful’’ passed on with verted eyes. The ashes used in the ceremonies of Ash Wednesday arc made in old countries only from the ashes of the olive which has been blessed the proceeding year and used in all the ceremonies of Palm Sunday. In this country,* the branches of hemlock, spruce, and sometimes arber vitie, cedar, and other varieties of evergreen aroused. Among Catholic churches these ashes are preserved, prepared and distri buted, and on this day of humiliation and prayer all good Catholics must receive an ashen cross on their fore head. REGULATIONS FOR LENT IX THE DIO CESE OK SAVAXXAII, 1878. 1. All the faithful who have com pleted their twenty-first year are, unless legitimately dispensed, bound to observe the fast of Lent. 2. They are to take only one meal in the day, except on Sundays. 3. The meal allowed on fast days is not to be taken until about noon. 4. Meat ami fish are not allowed at the same meal. 5. Small refreshment, commonly called collation, is allowed in the evening. 0. The quality of food allowed at the collation is milk, butter, cheese, all kinds of fruits, salads, vegetables and fish. 7. Eggs and milk allowed by dis pensation on fasting days, and during Lent. 8. To those who fast, custom al lows in the morning a cup of cofii e, or tea, or chocolate, and a small por tion of broad. 9. Necessity and custom have authorized the use of hog’s lard instead of butter for cooking. 10. The following persons are exempted from tl e obligation of fasting: Young persons under twen ty-one years of age ; women when nursing or in a delicate state of health; those who are obliged to do hard labor; the sick, and all who, through weakness, cannot fast with out prejudice to their health. ——. . ■ ■ — Tho European powers are to hold a conference at Vienna. Austraia, to talk ov«r the Russo-Turkish war. The Czar says he don’t see “Vi-cnna Russian should go dere.” Some amusing comments arc made regarding the statement that at the lecent public dinner to the Governor General at Montreal, when Mr. Dart, the United States Consul, rose to re ply to the toast to the President, lie said he wished he was there to res pond in his place. A voice immedi ately said, “ so do we,” and at once there was immense cheering. In fact the gentlemen rose and waved their napkings and cheered again and again. There seems to be a suspicion that the guests had as good reason as the Consul to prefer a speech from the President. MARCH 1878.
