Perhaps, since bis high hopes were blasted, death came as a solace and not a dread/ At all'eveiils, we would fain believe it be so, siuce the fiat is inex orable and the man’s career ended. Not unwisely did the great engineer George Stephenson declare that the most powerful force in Nature was the eye of a.beloved woman, since it could draw a nian from the ends of the earth; and not vriinty did Byron of negroes from Florida, it was also stated that lie was ufli-i.illy em powered l<> treat with GoV. Iu was ail for }ove. We are told a heart, history, that is pecu liarly delicate and romantic, and such a one as Congressmen are not often suspected of possessing. The story is circumstantially this: Some time ago, at the city of New Orleans, lie met a young lady, a na tive of Cuba, who was visiting this country with her parents, and be tween whom and Judge Leonard a warm attachment sprang up, which ripened into love. A marriage en gagement was the result, but the parents of the young lady, in conse quence of her youth, opposed the match, and JudgjCj Leonard was not permitted to see the object of his af- eetions except in the presence of her parents. When the time arrived for the departure of the Cuban and his family from New Orleans, the young lady manifested -Borne reluctance to return home, but an arrangement was finally made by which shea. d Judge Leonard were to be permitted to bold free and unrestricted correspondence through the mails. After her de parture, Judge tjeonard wrote her several letters, to which no answeis were received, which naturally an noyed him very much, and gave rise to the suspicion that his letters had been intercepted and the young lady prevented from commu ieuling with him. Alter a long interval, he re ceived a brief letter from the lady, which simply stat» d that she had not heard from him since her return to Cuba, and that she could not hear from him. This brief letter bore evidence of having been hurriedly written, gunl its broken and soiled condition led Judge Leonard to sus pect that it had been carried some distance by a negro to be secretI\ mailed. Alter writing other letters and waiting anxiously for replies, he became convinced that the parents of t!ie lady were not acting in good faith, and lie determined to visit Cuba. ? The condition of h;s mind rnay 1 e imagined when he beseiged the De partments cf the Government and the Spanish Ministry at Washington for aid and comtbrt. The Piesideiit wrote a personal letter to the Consul General at Havana, and, just helbn stalling, the Judge received a cable gram that his .inamorata had been sent —that is banished—to a lvniott plantation. This drove the pool Congressman nearly Irantic and idlaiis ot S ate were of no further impor tance to li m, while his lady love, tor mented by cruel parents, languished in solitude and prisonl'ikc environ m. m. The splendid beauties of the Federal capital, the dazzling enter tainments, the Texas Pacific Railroad, the discussion on “ stum page ” and other ravishing allurements could not wean his sick fancy from the dusk- eyed maiden who pined in a storm- vexed island for love of him. He • won the sympathies of Madame Man tilla, the beautiful wife of the Spanish Minister, and tiiat lady wrote such a letter na a lady would write in such a case, urging the Captain General to do everything possible to unite the lovers. Armed with these potent auxiliaries, lie set sail. On Ma.cli 7tli he wri te that lie had seen the lady in the presence of her parents. No details as to the success of his mis sion were furnished, but from the general ton&of despondency pervad ing the letter his friends believe he failed to obtain the consent of the parents Jo his addresses to their > daughter* • " The next news that came kvas his iTeWth by yellow fever. •• Ho d’as 5J2 years of a Of Harvard •ml Hiedelberg.
