Simply a bill of gray, white, or
brown linen thread. I take a ball of
this in my hand, fasten the end of it
to one of tlp’twigs cf the gooseberry
or currant \ns!f, and then cross the
1 bread backwards from twig to twig
in perhaps a -dozen different direc
tions, fasten -off, and the thing is
done; it will last two years—the
thread on the trees, I mean. It is
not necessary that-the thread should
be white, of course; it ought rather
to be flue and -dark—a thing to be
felt, not seen, fl have watched the
birds after performing the operation ;
they come boldly to settle on the
trees and they strike these, to them
invisible snares, for such no doubt
they 6eera to be;; they fly off in a
terrible hurry .and settle on the walls
and trees round about, longing and
getting hungry, until they disappear
and you see-them no more.
fSeafsteak.
A nice way,of cooking beefsteak is
to lay it on the bottom of the drip-
ping pan in the oven. Have ready
in a large plate a lamp of butter .with
boiling water over it. As soon as
the steak warins ^> pour this into the
dish; turn it event wo or three times,
pressing it down *vth the knife. The,
oven should hot be too hot, and for a!
thrce-|Cpiind piece it will take about
half affi hour to cook. Baste it often;
and at the last add salt and pepper to
the water. You can make thickened
gravy, it you desire, of the water and
butter in which you have basted it.
Steak cooked in tlis way is very
juicy and tender. » .
