Character. Character is nuch more than wealth or knowledge, fame or power, that it is the measure of the man. When a man is placed in a prominent position of any sort whatever, we say tt once not ‘what is he worth?’ not ‘what d >e« he know?’ but what sort of a man is he ?’ That is the momentous question that involves all. All others are secondary. Wealth, knowledge, fame and power are most desirable accessions for a good man: but other wise add strength to the wrong di rection. I wonder if the young men and boys realize that character is the most important capital in any and all business transactions. If a man of large business is looking for a partner or employee, what does he require most of all ? An honest man or boy. Wealth ami position with this first requisite, will be no detraction, but nothing without it. What pillars arc to a building* what the foundation is, ami the corner stone thereof, so is a good character to a man or woman, hoy or girl. The wise man said: “A good name is rather to be chosen than riches,” and ho had no lack of wealth. Remem ber, boys—and it will harm none to remember—that what you are is of infinite importance, and what you have is finite in its value ; its end is the grave; while the former will grow and enrich its possessor through all the ages of immortality. Strive for it as for your life, for life is nought without it; if a man die for his honor, he is an everlasting hero ; while if he dies for his wealth he is a sordid fool. We honor character in death, if not in life. “ So teach us to number our days as to apply oar hearts unto wis dom. APRIL 30, 187$. The Advantage of Being a Woman. “ Make way for the ladies!’’ is the law of civilized society from the equator to either pole. “ Will any gentleman oblige a lady ?” asks the omnibus conductor in his blandest tones;.and no sooner said than done. For whom are the tit bits reserved nt every feast? who is served first and has the best seat at breakfast, dinner and supper? Woman, lovely woman! Who pays for them.'? Man, the wretch. Man loves aud runs away. Woman brings action for breach of promise and gets damages. Woman loves rides away Man brings his action and gets hooted out of court. Whatsoever things are beauteous, whatsoever things are rare and costly, are at the disposal of woman to make her irresistible. Even the robin red breast lays down bis melodious life; and justly so, since a bird in her hat is worth two in the bush. The little bow-wows give up their brass collars, that they may shine on her snowy neck. She goes forth conquering and to conquer. Man—poor devil— with his chimney pot hat, and his coat s made of the wool of the conge nial sheep, is a mere collection of cncters, and his garments seem con trived to enhance his native ugliness. Who toils and suffers all hardships —bears the burden of the day and the rigor and darkness of the night? Man, the unhappy rascal! Meanwhile woman, bless her sweet heart! gives a smile,?|an order or two, and is queen of herself—that heritage of joy- These are only a few of the reasons which show what a grand and blessed thing it is to be a woman, and what cause for gratitude that human being has who is so sublimely privi leged. TESTIMONIALS. Atlanta, July 1st, 1874. DR. BIGGERS—Dear Sir: In the use of your Southern Remedy in my family, I have found it the most pleasant medicine for children to take, and the most satisOutory to cure I have ever met. I have used it now for several years, and never allow myself to be without some of it on hand, and its imme diate use saves all trouble and danger. I have always felt if you ball no other -lalm to the public con fidence than this specific, it alone should give it to yon, and both, fame and fortune added, if you would only sufficiently advertise it to let the world know its healing power and benefits.
